This is probably more for actual students rather than parents, but who knows...

So to get ready for orientation it tells us to go to the knightsource site and read that stuff. Read it, and it mentions going to orientation having an idea of what you want your schedule to be.

I took a look at the catalogue and started searching classes and making notes of the times and whatnot, but I'm a little lost.

First... most of the academics that UCF's Marketing catalogue outlines me to take my freshman year, I have already APed out of. So I'm down to mostly electives, math, and speech.

Second... for Burnett I know I'm required to take Freshman Symposium, which does not seem to be on the list. I can't actually find any honors classes on the list for Fall 08 or Spring 09 (though there are some for Spring 08 that I accidentally bumped into).

Better question, perhaps, is do I really need to plan this stuff out before orientation? Isn't that kind of what my adviser is for... figuring out what I've already earned credit for and telling me what else I need? So should I just have a vague idea in mind, or actually have a clear idea of when and what I'm taking?

I just downloaded the whole catalog, and my head is now spinning. I'm an undecided major, so I'm really not sure what to do at all. I'm just saving it for orientation, though I did take a peek at the requirements for majors I was interested in.

Yeah, I think I'm just going to have an idea in mind but not plan anything. Because with no real information given, I don't know what AP credits count for what sections.

I'm counting on the fact that the majority of students will not read that website before orientation, so it's likely very few people will actually have things planned.

My daughter and I were looking at the online course schedules and most of her required classes for her major were already filled up! She called the school and a student answered the phone. She said that new sections of the gen ed classes will open during orientation but did not think that there would be any new sections of the non gen ed classes. This seems ridiculous. She has to take a 2 credit Intro to Allied Health Professions class that is only given in Fall and it is already full???? Chemistry 2045C is also completely full???? Anyone know what is going on here who to ask about this?

Yeah, that was another issue with the filling up.

Especially since I thought Burnett kids got first pick of classes for fall & spring terms? So I guess maybe the summer kids actually get first fall pick?

OK...I'm going to attempt to explain how to find Honors Courses and hope it makes sense! Go to your MyUCF, then Student Self Service. Click on the green link for Class Search/Browse Catalog. Choose Fall 2008, Search for Classes, Go. Class Search Criteria comes up....in the Special Courses option, pick Honors Courses, then Search. The Honors classes (including Honors Symposium) will show up.
Some of the classes that you mentioned are already full (Allied Health & Chemistry) may have been taken by upcoming sophomores/juniors who are just deciding on a major???
Seiclan - my daughter will also need to take that Intro to Allied Health Professions class, too. Keep checking back....as people are "tweaking" their schedules, you may find an open spot. That happened with a class that my older daughter needed. People back online throughout the summer and change their schedules around, so sometimes a spot will open up in a class that is full.

Hey guys, I am working at orientation and also I am a student so I can give you a better perspective.

Yes, Honors students pick classes first, but they only pick first out of first time in college students when they are first coming in. A lot of classes have been taken by upperclassmen and transfers so it looks like not a lot is open. When you become a sophmore, you will be one of the first to pick so you will usually always get what you want.

They will be opening more classes at orientation so dont worry. It might be tougher to get in the upper level stuff right now, but take some electives, or other requirements and then enroll in those classes later. Too many Freshman are worried that if they dont get exactly what classes they want they will never get through college. there are other options.

they will have advising sessions at orientation where they can help you with everything so preparing might be good, but the advisors might change around what you plan on taking because they have experience of what order you should take classes.

Finally, Honors is still trying to put together classes because some departments have not told them what they would like offered in the Honors College. You will get a huge list at orientation and you will be able to plan it from there.

If you guys have any other questions let me know, but don't worry so much. The reason they have you come to orientation is to help you with this process. You getting ulcers stressing out from classes being closed is not going to help you at all. Take it easy, enjoy your summer, and get ready to enjoy college.

Bumping up this old thread to ask the upperclassmen, ECO 2013 or ECO 2023 (Macro or Micro). My daughter can take either…she is a science major, not business. Which is easier and more interesting at UCF???

According to my son, like or dislike of each is based on the individual. He doesn’t feel as though one is inheritantly easier or more difficult than the other. He’d suggest that she read about each course and decide which one sounds more interesting to her. He had macro economics in high school, as did your daughter probably, so he thought that one might be more “easy” in the sense you might recognize the same concepts. But other than that … he couldn’t really help. Sorry.

thanks so much for answering Zebes. She may not have much of a choice as it turns out…due to budget cuts, UCF may be cutting out some of the sections of economics this Fall and Spring. She may have to choose one based upon where it fits into her schedule (since the one she had wanted may be dropped).
