I have not been to the SOAR orientation yet… Mine is August 10, (tomorrow). Anyways, a few days ago on the Cal Poly Portal, under “My Classes,” there’s a list of classes that I’m enrolled in? (right?). So is that the general layout of my schedule? (I know they are still tweaking schedules to accommodate the AP scores etc.) However, I’m still confused because on the 2011-2013 flowchart for my major (comptuer engineering), it says I should be enrolled in Writing Exposition ENGL 134 and Elec. mftg. IME 156 or 157 or 458 (No clue what that is), which I’m not.
Back to the first question, if I’m enrolled in those classes, what is PASS and CPReg for? I feel utterly screwed in terms of the coming Fall class registration.

EDIT: PASS says that all ENGL 134 classes are “closed.” Does this mean I would have to take it next quarter?

First of all you will have all of your questions answered tomorrow. PASS is simply a way to create schedules before you register. It gives you options to create scenarios for multiple schedules which you can then try to get. You won’t use it this time because the college has done all of the work for you to help you get a good start on you class schedule. All of the general ed English classes are recommended for your first year. Usually they have to completed to insure that you can write and are used as a prerequisite for further classes in your general ed curriculum. If all the classes are closed then you can go on a waitlist and try to aquire this class on your opening day of registration which will be august 14 to 17 I believe for freshmen. Or you can try to crash a class on the first day of school. Or you can try to swap a class if you have one that you would like to change. These are all options.

IME 458 is Microelectronics and Elecronics Packaging. This has prerequisite classes and 400 classes are normally upper division classes. The 156 and 157 are about electronic manufacturing and sound more appropriate to a freshman. I would be more concerned about the classes in you major. You most certainly can pick up the english class next quarter and can substitute another general ed class if need be. But check with your advisor tomorrow at soar…they are the experts. Good luck and enjoy Cal Poly.

You know, they really shouldn’t set up the flowchart the way they do. Outside of your major (EE is special in this area, they make a specific effort to have major courses in flowchart order), there is no guarantee that the classes listed are even offered in flowchart order.

GEs and support must be taken in prerequisite order. Ie, you have to take 134 before you can to tech writing (Engl 149?). You must complete area A before you can do certain area C GE electives. Beyond that, it doesn’t really matter. Think of these requirements like a tree. Taking a class may open up other things down the tree that you need, but beyond that it doesn’t matter where you start.
