I am a new graduate student for Fall 2011. I noticed my class enrollment date is less than a week before fall classes actually begin. I was worried that the classes I want to enroll into will all be full by the time my enrollment date comes.
My question is: Is it common for classes at USC to fill up and prevent students from enrolling?
Is there anyway I can still get into a class somehow; is there some sort of petition or does it work by contacting the professor beforehand? Any input would be great.

Before you panic, here is the Fall 2010 archived schedule of classes [Fall 2010 | Schedule of Classes](Fall 2010 | Schedule of Classes) . You can check to see if the classes you plan to take were filled last year, or if there was space available. The schedule of courses shows how many spaces were available, and how many students registered for the class. Graduate courses are typically in the 500-series. I checked a few in engineering and all had space. To check, click on the course and look under the heading “Registered.”

If it turns out a class is filled when you attempt to register, go to the class the first day and ask to add the class.

Yeah thanks but the course I’m interested in had 0 seats available at the end of the semester and I can’t really go to class on the first day since I’m a DEN student.

I am not at all familiar with the distance education program, and I am not aware of any regular posters here who have mentioned that they are participating in DEN.

If the registration works in the same way as for on-campus students, you lurk trying to grab a spot when others drop, and sometimes courses will have a waitlist. With classes on-campus, the spots tend to go to those who keep at it, so yes, emailing the professor would be a good idea. Good luck.

You don’t say what department/course but DEN classes rarely fill to capacity. Note that as a DEN student you always register for the section that is listed as “OFF CAMPUS” and not for the on campus sections. Even if the on campus section is full you can still register if there is space in the OFF CAMPUS section. So pay attention to the registration in the OFF CAMPUS sections.
