Anyone received scholarship from the schools they’ve been accepted to yet? Obviously they don’t need to yet, but I’m just wondering. I haven’t gotten mine yet.
No. Just illinois. And calls and emails regarding scholarships, but no firm numbers. no fun waiting.
My daughter has received scholarships from all of the schools she’s been accepted to thus far, and full financial aid packages from 5 of them.
Wow. Your schools are ahead of everyone. We didn’t do the fafsa. Do they do a final cost estimate when you don’t do the fafsa?
If you don’t fill out FAFSA you will not get anything like that. I contacted Berklee to make sure that I didn’t have to complete it for my sons scholarship and they assured me I didn’t as it was based on his audition. We would not qualify and didn’t want to spend the better part of a day filling it out. The priority deadline for FAFSA was March 1. I have heard he earlier you get the application in the better your chances for Federal $$$
For us. We won’t get anything but unsubsidized loans which I might fill it out for that just in case.
So we will just get a bill and figure out what we owe from there. Hmmm. How do you compare cost that way? I suppose I’ll just call the schools to get all fees and final cost.
I was somewhat confused about FAFSA and merit scholarships. Did the EFC and will not get aid. We went ahead and filled it out as well as the CSS that was needed for one school. Just wanted to be on the safe side. Yes it was a pain to fill out!!
Many schools which award merit monies require the applicant to file a FAFSA, and sometimes a CSS Profile, even knowing in advance that the EFC will be higher than the cost of attendance. But it’s needed for the school’s own internal accounting purposes for grants, fellowships, scholarships, government reporting, donors etc. Merit awards are also sometimes adjusted based on the finances of the applicant - even though it’s not called financial aid - i.e. higher merit awards are often given to students with more financial need, for various reasons, sometimes philosophical, sometimes practical.
You should be able to find those costs on the schools websites. Any I have looked at have it broken down and generally include a cost calculator also.
We may fill it out just not on deadline. We won’t receive any aid. I’m not wild about sharing financial info until after merit is in. Maybe that’s me being paranoid. No schools require Fafsa for merit so far. I filled out the css profile for one school when I had influenza to meet deadline. I can’t imagine what kind of mistakes I made.
I totally agree! Not being paranoid!
Most schools that D applied to( especially during the grad school process) required that the FAFSA form be submitted as a part of the application process (if you wanted to be considered for a merit scholarship).Has this changed?
Our EFC for undergrad was pretty high and for grad, since she was not a dependent, was nil. ( still the school of her choice she still got plenty of undergrad merit aid) I remember the undergrad FAFSA requirement since one of the department heads phoned us early on and said that “if you don’t submit your FAFSA we will not offer a merit scholarship, even though it’s not tied into your EFC”
It varies. I have two kids currently in school and they are both required to submit FAFSA even though they receive merit aid, not FA. For other schools (I know from friends) it is not necessary to submit FAFSA if you only receive a merit award. My daughter who is a grad is no longer required to report our income for her school, but some schools do require parent income on the FAFSA for grad school.
I guess one school is Fafsa informed but doesn’t require it. I don’t believe my son will receive much merit there. I don’t know if things have changed regarding merit. I just know he won’t be attending anywhere that we can’t afford which any school without merit.
Did you do the UNT academic merit calculator? If you get any scholarship at all (including music) you get in state tuition so from there it should be relatively easy to calculate billable costs.
They said they are still processing academic merit. My son is not in the top 25% so that hurts him. I might appeal if he doesn’t get any. He goes to a good high school and most everyone is a good student. I should of thought of that when I enrolled him.lol.
That is weird how they tie everything to class rank. Back before DS refused to apply there I was trying to estimate his rank to do the merit calculator as our HS only runs ranks one time in October of senior year.
