I was wondering if the "Extracurricular Interests and Activities" section would be a good place to put something like "Sophomore Class Homecoming King." Should I even put this in my application at all?

i'd say no

It could go with honors and awards but I would think that adcoms look at stuff like that as popularity contests and though it can't hurt it's not really impressive.

This question comes up every year. Yes, put it on. You can put it under honors and awards. There's nothing wrong with being popular. In fact, being well liked is an asset for virtually anything that one wants to accomplish including in one's career.

Colleges do want personable students. If you have high stats, excellent ECs, and are personable very well liked, that "package" is a strong asset for life in general including college admissions.

My viewpoint is that of an Ivy alumni interviewer and a person who has been a committee member on national and regional scholarship committees, and has chosen students for leadership programs.

Agree, put it under awards. It is not really an "activity" for EC. Though it is a popularity thing, I agree, some colleges may think that means there is something extra to you....

I'm an International student and so 'Class Homecoming King' is a new term for me. Here's what Wiki said about it:

[quote]
Classmates traditionally nominate students who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to contribute to their school. Other times, students vote for the nominees. Once the Homecoming Court candidates are announced, the entire student body votes for the Queen and King (by secret ballot).

It seems very interesting an achievement to me; it would show colleges that you're a gregarious and outgoing kid.

I'd definitely suggest you put it on your app!

i guess i agree that put it cause what can it hurt but it really depends on the school. if you apply to the hotel school at cornell they say that looks help and require a photo. if you apply for engineering, i can't see it helping cause they are more interested in your math ability. but it shouldn't hurt you so add it if you want. my hs was more about that type of award going to who the staff felt deserved it (the students voted but the staff would veto if they felt it was undeserved) so we all really did not consider it important but maybe for you school it is.

I think you should include it because it says something about you.

Look at these almost identical descriptions:

GPA 3.8
SAT 2040
National Honor Society
Homecoming King

AND

GPA 3.8
SAT 2040
National Honor Society
Member, Stamp Club

You get a totally different idea of the person based on the last EC listed.

I know at my school they often vote nerdy boys with hot popular girls. It's actually pretty funny.

Haha you have to dance in front of the school here, so no guys are willing. I was homecoming queen this year, and had to force this guy to do it. They ended up changing the rules to where the girls dance and the guys stand there, and of course a ton of guys wanted to! I didn't include it on my app though... I thought it sounded sorta desperate.

In my opinion, the title of "Sophomore Class Homecoming King" will make your application memorable due to the laughter it generates. If this is a community service type award, then it is worth mentioning under community service.

Since when does the sophmore class get a homecoming king?

and don't most schools just nominate a really nerdy guy along with a hot chick?

I actually won my 10th grade Homecoming Court Rep as well, and I planned on including it next year in my apps. I mean really it can't hurt, and I'm sure, as said above, it shows that people like you well enough.

Thank you for all of your wonderful replies! I am truly grateful that there were 11 responses to this question in less than one day. I will definitely be putting this on my application. ^^

its shows ur not someone whos unliked. put it under honors

haha missypie, i bursted out laughing at your comment.

I was a Homecoming Prince this year. :)

gouchicago, it's a popularity contest. NTTAWWT.

Oh thank God I've been wondering what I should do with my title of Sophomore HC Prince. It actually serves a purpose..
