Class not offered at CC

Hello, I’m currently a student at De Anza/Foothill College and I tagged to UCI as a Biomedical Engineering major. On the UCI TAG website, one of the required class is “one course in programming and problem-solving in MATLAB or programming concepts and methodologies for engineers”. Unfortunately, both De Anza and Foothill do not offer that MATLAB class. I tried looking at another local cc and apparently they don’t offer the MATLAB class for summer since the class is very low in demand (8 students out of 37 are taking it). During winter I took an intro to C++ class so I’m not sure if I can replace my MATLAB class with my intro C++ class. Feel free to leave any opinions or suggestions! Thank you so much,

I’m in a similar situation with this MATLAB course. Initially, when I called UCI, they told me that it had to be MATLAB and there were no alternatives. As of now, it seems that C++ or MATLAB are options to fulfill this requirement on assist and their website. This requirement doesn’t seem to have a concrete answer to it, but I’m hoping TAG is not voided because of it as I have tagged UCI as well.

im glad that I found a person that is in the same boat as me lol I took one quarter of C++ so im not sure if they can substitute that with MATLAB but im glad that i took C++. I emailed one of the UCI representatives to see if its fine. will keep u updated!

so are you saying that C++ CAN AND WILL replace MATLAB or its a maybeee?

For my CC I know that a specific C++ class is an option. On assist it gives me the option saying that C++ can be used to substitute MATLAB, but MATLAB is highly recommended it says

what is your major and what cc do u go to?

bc i dont see where they say c++ can be replaced MATLAB on my assist.

There is no “or” option? Like as in MATLAB or some other course?

oh it says MATLAB or “Introduction to Programming Concepts and Methodologies for Engineers”. I think programming concepts and methodologies is C++ bc i searched up my course catalog and the name of our intro to c++ is “Beginning Programming Methodologies in C++” which is pretty similar.

For me, “programming concepts and methodologies” is an intro python course. It has that exact title. For MATLAB, it is titled “numerical analysis”. I’m thinking UCI strictly only accepts courses from your assist, which means “programming concepts and methodologies” isn’t as general as it is made out to be.

so are you saying that it might be different for everyone since we all go to different cc?

I believe so. If your assist specifically states that it allows the C++ class you took as an alternative, then you should be okay. I’m unsure on how UCI decides what classes fulfill what. This requirement is honestly just a massive headache as it is such a specific class that few CCs offer.

If you TAG’d and it says C++ is accepted as an alternative, you should be fine.

yup i double checked the assist for computer engineering to see which class corresponds to “Introduction to Programming Concepts and Methodologies for Engineers” aka MATLAB and the alternative to that is “Programming Concepts and Methodology 1” which is C++ so i guess C++ is accepted!!!
