Hey I'm gonna be a senior next yr in high school and Syracuse is my first choice. how can I increase my chances of getting in?

quite simple really

a) get the highest SAT score possible (preferably above 1650 on the new SAT)
b) get the highest GPA possible (anything better than a 3.2 should be alright, but SU claims the average is a 3.6)
c) couple ECs never hurt
d) write some BS essay about racial tolerance, diversity, etc. They love to hear this crap. SU pretends to be diversified and all that, but basically everybody splits off into their own racial group. Although I am [extrememly] white, I found that most white people are rich and snotty, so generally made friends with anybody who WASNT. But even so, it shouldn't be too hard to churn out an essay.

im going to be a senior too, and i read that doing a course at a local community college helps you most.

-anarchy, is a 3.25 GPA and a 29 on the ACT good enough to get me into a moderatley difficult college? like san diego state university

Taking courses at a local college (community college or no), is good because not only does it show that you are capable of doing college-level work, but it acquaints you well to the expectations of college. APs are completely unlike college courses (and I found the work at SU to be much, much easier).

While I am unfamiliar with that particular college, I came across this information on the CollegeBoard website:

* 21% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
* 29% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
* 29% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
* 15% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
* 6% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99

Percent applicants admitted: 44%

SAT Reasoning Verbal: 480 - 580
SAT Reasoning Math: 500 - 600
ACT Composite: 20 - 25

So, basically, I'd say you have a 50/50 chance of getting in. I don't know what your ECs look like, however. If they are noteworthy (officer position(s), competitions, etc), versus just lay-membership, then that would also give you quite a bit more clout come admissions time.

lol @ extremely white.

melosyracuse, what high school did u go to in atl? i lived in atl for four months after hurricane katrina.

I found these stats on college board for Syracuse

Middle 50% of
First-Year Students Percent Who
Submitted Scores
SAT Reasoning Verbal: 550 - 650 96%
SAT Reasoning Math: 570 - 670 96%
ACT Composite: - 25%

anarchy, if i took a summerschool class and passed it, it raises my gpa for that college to a 3.4! b/c they only look at 10th and beyond academic course grades. so that improves my chances alot i think right?

just to be safe: SAT 1850, 3.5 unweighted, 3-4 really "tight" ECs w/ some prominent positions, and prove you're not like everyone else on your essay.

Your stats need to be higher if you want Newhouse.

Class of '07 here. Not sure if SU is my first choice or not, depends on if I get an ROTC scholarship. I'm not sure if my parents want to pay for two of their kids to be at SU at the same time!

oh. well im sure you'll get a scholarship. i mean, if your parents have two kids in college, that wouldn't be fair if u had to settle for less because your older sibling is there also.

yea its called the sibling in college......something or other.
