Well I wish all of you guys the best of luck next year.

A few suggestions:

Don't panic.

Since it seems like nearly everyone who has posted has a pretty good idea about where they want to go to college, I believe that you should definitely have a near complete list with at least one safety by October, in time for the early deadlines.

Get your teacher recs early, at my school, the best teachers only will write a limited number of recs to people, and by mid-October, the most popular teachers were already filled up with recs.

Register on the common app when it first opens up its site again in July so you can at least look at the app, fill in some parts, read the essay prompts, and at least get an idea about how much time you might spend on the application.

At least get an idea about essay topics early, jot down ideas anywhere, anytime. I found that some of my best ideas came at random moments, mostly in the shower or while driving (don't write ona notepad while driving, you might crash).

Start writing you essays relatively early, at least start one for EA/ED (if you are doing it) in September. For regular, at least start during Thankgiving break and no later than winter break.

Also, have a definite and final list of colleges you're going to apply to by the beginning of December, it makes life that much easier.

Do a crapload of research on colleges in your spare time, don't get set on only one college, unless your lucky or a genius, you will get disapointed.

Get people to proofread your essays and proofread your application.

Read the application and essays yourself at least five time over a period of a week.

Do not wait until the last minute to be filling out anything.

Watch deadlines, I remember for my Duke app I had to submit the pre-application part by December 1 in order to get an interview. The due date of that application was January 2 but they still wanted stuff in before that.

Get your SATs over with by November, those are a real b*tch during senior year.

Remember to check what SAT IIs colleges require.

Talk to your guidance counselor early and often, most of them are quite friendly and willing to talk.

Talk to your teachers a lot, especially ones that you might have had in freshman or sophomore year that you haven't tlkaed to a lot and might need a rec from.

Be nice and patient with your teachers when they write their recs, they ahve a lot of work to deal with already.

I gave Christmas gifts to my teachers at a show of my gratitude for them writing me college recs. Do it event hough you might not get accepted to the colleges that your teachers wrote recs to. Anything is good, even a card or a cookie means a lot.

Don't slack off first semester of senior year, taht can make or break yoru chances at many colleges that you apply regular decision to.

Only do ED if you are absolutely sure about what college you want to go to and if you are relatively wealthy. Statistically, financial aid packages are significantly lower for ED people than for RD people.

Sleep.... a lot.

Get yoru parents to fill out financial aid info early, and e-mail colleges if you arent' sure about that. Also, get your parents to do their tax returns early, like right after they get their W-2s. Same with the people who work. For example, U Chicago, Cornell, and U Penn all wanted early info based off of 2004 tax returns with my application in Janaury.

Research scholarship oppurtunities, there's a lot of money out there, even a few hundred dollars means something.

Eat, enough.

Get FAFSA and CSS/Profile done early.

After submitting applications, remember that you can always ask the college if you have any questions or even comments, just try and show you're interested in attending that college (may not help for schools like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton where everyone wants to attend).
