Reaches: Princeton, MIT
Matches: Cornell, Wash U
Safeties: UVA, UChicago, UMich-AA, Emory(?)

No idea where I wanna go or how I'm gonna classify potential colleges as reaches/matches/safeties, but I'm considering:

NYU
Cornell
Columbia
Princeton
Brown
SUNY Stony Brook
SUNY Binghamton?
Rochester
Rennselaer Polytechnic
Boston U
Boston College

University of Miami

University of Tampa

NYU

George Washington University

UCB/UCLA

But probably, for financial reasons, I will end up going to the school that gives me the most money (which, out of the list, would be either Miami or Tampa)

Just had another career center meeting; this is how it's looking.

Reach = Brown
Possible = Swarthmore, Haverford, Amherst
Probable = Wesleyan, Bates
Safety = Brandeis, Kenyon
Super-safety = Goucher

Swarthmore is my favorite so far, and I have a huge lot of legacy which actually makes it more of a "probable". And ED should help. So I'm good.

How come 90% of you are only putting Ivy Leagues/really expensive private colleges with a good name on your list? Are you really so concerned with prestige that you won't go to a school that you like if it doesn't have a great rep? I would argue that the name of the college isn't that important down the road, and that going somewhere that you're happy with and having as little debt as possible is what people should be looking at.

I, along with others I am sure, appreciate your concern for our college choices. But frankly, I fail to see what business it is of yours to tell us which schools we should consider if we have not asked for it. I am sure that all those posting very prestigious schools have their own particular reasons for doing so. The fact that lesser known schools have not been listed is merely a logical extension of the fact that they are lesser known. Jumping to the conclusion that our decisions are motivated by "name brands" is inappropriate and simply unfair.

I'm not applying to publics because as an int'l I (a) don't qualify for in-state tuition anywhere, and (b) am more likely to get decent financial aid from private universities with large endowments.

I'm not applying to unselective colleges because if I'm going to pay an outrageous amount of money for my education, I want to surround myself with intellectual, motivated people. If I can't get that here (either because I don't get in or because I don't get enough aid) I might as well go back to Europe and benefit from my EU citizen discount. I'm sure some of the UK schools would be glad to have me.

FWIW, this is the longer list of colleges I'm considering:

Yale
Stanford
MIT
Brown
Amherst
Williams
Swarthmore
University of Chicago
Pomona
Middlebury
Wesleyan
Carleton
Colgate
Macalester
Grinnell
Vassar
Wellesley
Bryn Mawr.

I obviously need to reduce the number of reaches, but it's not like all of them are Ivies, either. :rolleyes:

I really really really want to go to PRINCETON! I really don't know why but I just want to..lol.. Well, its the only university I visited which might be the reason but anyways here is my list
Princeton
Cornell
Columbia
NYU
Rutgers
NJIT
basically..if I don't get into Ivy Leagues where I want to go then I'll probably end up in Rutgers anyways..so I figured no point in making huge lists. I know Princeton has good financial aid so I would definitley go if I got in but if I do not God forbid then my parents will send me to Rutgers..I know it = (

Yes, because unless you to pay $40,000 a year to go to PrincetonHarvardYaleGeorgetownAnotherNameBrandSchool, you'll never get to meet "intellectuals."

You all really need to get over yourselves.

Did you even read my full post?

(1) Last time I checked, schools like Colgate, Grinnell, Bryn Mawr, and Macalester weren't "PrincetonHarvardYaleGeorgetownAnotherNameBrandScho ol".

(2) I did say I'm applying for aid, didn't I? Believe me, I'm not wealthy, so don't make assumptions.

Oleanders, I am in support of thisyearsgirl. You are crossing the line by attacking people individual. You have no right to tell thisyearsgirl, or anyone else for that matter, where they can and cannot apply. Your attack on prestigious higher institutions is irritational and it begs the question as to why you are so intent on trashing others for no good reason of your own.

Oleanders, why are you being so aggressive?

I don't feel that i'm being irrationally aggressive. I asked what I feel was a legitimate question, and recieved a snotty response. I really feel that, like the poster I was talking to, if you believe you won't be around people who are "intellectuals" like you believe yourself to be, then you need to wake up and get over yourself. I'm not attacking the institutions themselves, but I am attacking the attitude that I believe many of you here possess.

I still think you're misinterpreting what I'm saying. My prospective list of 18 schools includes two Ivies, Stanford, and MIT (with a mental question mark next to the acronym; I'm not sure it'd be a fit). The rest are mostly LACs, some relatively unknown, and a few universities. I honestly don't know why you keep implying that I'm a prestige whore. Where do you suggest I apply?

I've spent nearly years in high school being at or near the top of my class. I'm tired of being the "token smart kid", okay? I don't think it's presumptuous to assume that there'll be a higher proportion of bright kids at Swarthmore than at your local community college. Let's not be ridiculous.

Not legitimate, but presumptuous. Not snotty, but slighted.

Well, I'm sorry if you feel offended, because I know it seemed like I was targeting just you. Really, though, it's for a couple people. And I still believe you're being pretentious in your responses. Yes, you're just so much smarter than the rest of us, aren't you

Can you please stop putting words in my mouth? Most people at my high school aren't really motivated...that's all. It'd be nice to meet some kids who actually care about learning instead of whining that omgah! they brought in this high-profile speaker to tell us about global issues and they actually expect us to stay awake!

(And I'm not trying to be pretentious, you know. This is just how I write. Sorry if it offends.)
