Class of '08: Kinda early, but any thoughts on where to apply?

Would you prefer Riceronians?

Just kiddin'. You know I love Rice.

I think that would have to be contingent on a relocation to San Francisco.

Well I'm '09 but heck, who cares...

-Yale (probably SCEA)
-U of Chicago
-Harvard
-NYU
-Columbia
-Georgetown
-Princeton
-Michigan
-Iowa
-Nebraska (in-state)

My List:

Pomona (ED)
Claremont Mckenna
Whitman
Williams
Duke
UO Honors College

Pomona rocks!

Olin College of Engineering
UC's + maybe Cal Poly
Carnegie Mellon
Cooper Union
Rose Hulman
Georgia Tech
RPI

as for reaches/other safeties... I dunno yet.

murkywater, I took the January SAT. Not bad at all...my first and hopefully last time taking that silly test.

Did you get your scores already? I'm a little worried because my PSAT was low. I rarely ever find time to study because of all my homework.. I am taking 5 APs this year and it is very mentally taxing.

Here's where I'll probably end up applying:
RIT
Temple
U of Iowa
U of Washington (Seattle)
Syracuse
East Carolina U
Kent State

Murkywater....I took Dec. 2nd and Jan. 27th SAT's and will take ACT Feb. 10th. They aren't too bad at all.

My schools of choice in no real order (because I have no idea):

-Northwestern
-UVA
-Vandy
-Purdue
-MIT (more of a reach than some of these other schools but would be pretty cool to get in)
-U of Chicago (^^^)
-Clemson
-UNC
-UC Berk. (^^^)
-Michigan
-Illinois
-Georgia

Ask me again in 3 months and I bet I cut the list in half...

Possibilities:

-Harvey Mudd
-Caltech [major reach, but I can dream]
-JHU
-Davidson
-Georgia Tech
-Dartmouth
-Carnegie Mellon
-Case Western
-some UCs (?)
-Columbia

-safety schools

Carnegie Mellon

The Rest =

JHU
Cornell
Northwestern
UChicago
UC's for safeties

It's not too early. Right now, it's in style to argue that students are starting too early, but you cannot fit in the SAT or ACT (maybe two attempts), SAT2, visits, interviews, essays, applications, recommendations, financial aid/scholarship apps, etc, unless you start as early as possible. Try to start doing your visits now, if at all possible. You also need time upfront for the thinking-it-through process. The more thought that you put into it, the fewer applications you can get away with. You can come up with a short but realistic and focused list and save a lot of work and anguish.

Agree with OneMom.

And yes, I titled it "a bit early", but I definitely know that it isn't early now :D

Again, back to OneMom's message, it reminds me when I had a college list comprised of 10-12 colleges. I've done a lot of research and read many reviews in several sites, and my list has changed a lot. The top ones are

JHU
USC
Rice

I still need slight reaches/safeties, of course.

Anyway, I got rid of so many colleges, even I can't imagine this happened.

And yes, investing time and effort in researching colleges definitely helps narrow down college lists and save money and energy when filling out apps.

But yes, to all JRs. out there, it never hurts to start EARLY, never. But this doesn't mean panic. Just try to find your perfect match school (ie intramural sports, research opportunities, special curriculums available, off-campus study quality, student quality, food, dorms, campus feel, location urban/rural, etc etc etc)

Any more Jrs out there? Keep the thread running! Post them college lists!

Yah my list changes a lot as well.

UMiami

UCSB

UC-Boulder

Indiana

SDSU

LMU

ASU

Wow, kevster, JHU, Rice, and USC? Bit of geographic jumping there, eh? :P

Probably ED to NYU and if I get rejected...

2.GWU
3.Boston University
4.USC
5.UCLA
6.U of Washington-Seattle
7.Temple
8.Rutgers
9.Tulane
10. U of Miami
11.Drexel
12.UMD-College Park
13.American
Possibly: Occidental College, Columbia College(Chicago),Northeastern,Pace,U of MN, U of Texas-Austin.

The schools on my list right now are as follows (no particular order):

Clarkson (Safety)
Johns Hopkins (Reach)
Lafayette (Match)
Vanderbilt (Match)
Lehigh (Match)
Bucknell (Match)
Washington (Safety)
Colorado (Safety)
Arizona (extreme safety, I would get a full ride for national merit)
USMA (Reach, but only because they accept just 10-20% of applicants. Otherwise, probably a match)
USAFA (Reach-same as above)

I guess the niche I occupy here is someone that is interested in a liberal arts-type school near mountains and not smack-dab in a city with good engineering programs and a broad curriculum so I can take classes outside of the engineering discipline. I should probably have a couple more reaches. Anyone got any advice? Before you say Carnegie-Mellon or Cornell, you have to have taken calculus to major in engineering at both of those, and I will not have completed that by the time I go to college. Public/private, size, selectivity, prestige, etc., don't really matter much to me. And wherever I go needs to have Army or Air Force ROTC. Any ideas?

I'm in the class of '08 and have half-completed applications sitting on my desk. (Not applications I plan to send in; ideas written on the essays, pencil markings on my weak points.) It is great timing to begin serious, flexible thought now.

There are seven schools (including a huge reach and two safeties) that over time I have decided are going to get applications from me, and that list has yet to change. I am open to adding one or two more.

Right now, I'm thinking...

UVa
UNC-Chapel Hill
Penn State
Pitt
William and Mary
UC Berkeley
Stanford

Probably going to throw one or two more safeties in there.

08'....nice

ummm

Notre Dame
Notre Dame
Notre Dame
San Diego
Boston College
UC boulder for safety

and maybe usc and mich and wake
