Okay, so whoever is planning on attending Bates, express your views here, get to know each other here, and all that good stuff! In any case, I’m pretty sure I’m going there, although not certain (depends on whether my dad can get a decent loan). Anyhow, my name is Abhishek Kumar. I’m an international student from India, but studying in Caracas, Venezuela. Yeah, random, but cool nonetheless. The Latin culture rules Heh, has anyone been down here? Anyhow, I’m not sure what I’ll major in just yet, but I’m thinking one or two of the following: Astronomy, Mathematics or Economics. Well, that’s enough babbling from my side; someone else speak. Chao

Well, I'm new to the class of 2008, if I can respond...
I currently go to an unkown LAC 45 minutes away and I'm transferring. I'm really excited. I am up at Bates constantly, almost twice a week usually for parties/events. I'll be majoring in History with either a minor in Religion or Poli Sci. I'm hoping for a decent roommate in Summer Selection housing. My parents haven't seen the campus yet or officially decided, but I haven't paid my deposits at my current school so it's pretty much inevitable.
Please ask me any questions you have about Bates, or get in touch with me if you're definitely going, I'm more than willing to help in any way.

Sweet, man! That sounds like a good deal. Where do you go now? U-Maine? I was planning to go there, but then I got into Bates, haha. And as for the questions, what do you think about the social life, the campus and just the general feel of being at Bates? Oh, and how often do people go out to places like Boston or NYC? Just a few curious questions that have been on my mind for a bit now, heh. And I am decently sure I'll be going there because they gave me $36,000 in aid every year, which is pretty nice. But I am still waiting to hear from Colgate; doubt I'll get in there, though. So yeah, since I should be hearing form them any day now, this entire matter should be solved quite soon.

Haha I got no aid because my dad is a hard-working capitalist, but oh well. Right now I go to St. Joseph's College of Maine honors program. Not the most amazing school, so I'm pumped about going to Bates.

And, since seemingly everyone comes from 20 minutes outside Boston, people go to Boston all the time (you should even think about going down with a friend to Boston for a break week).

PS you'd better go to bates =)

WHAT TO WEAR:

www.ems.com (that store is like Valhalla for me, but they don't sell winter clothes until the fall. Even better, wait until you go to Maine and stop by an EMS store)

I recommend a down jacket (for the extra-cold days), a good heavy-duty fleece (you could fulfill the preppy stereotype and get a North Face Denali fleece or just get a much less expensive one somewhere else), long underwear, and some wool socks (Wigwam are the best).
Oh and of course a thick BATES hoodie!
Your best bet is to wait until you get to Maine, you'lll have a good month before it starts to get brisk.

Alright, guess I should chime in here (although I am just a lurker here, been like that for a long time)...
I am Matej, from Zagreb, Croatia - although currently in Australia doing my gap year teaching at a school here, coaching baseball and playing cricket. Went to a small private all-boys HS in Connecticut, and now got into Bates, my first choice all along. Go the Bobcats!
Prospective major, well, not sure, most likely Political Science, Econ., History, or Russian.
Oh and just might have to choose chem-free housing, as I've seen enough drinking and drunkeness in my school here in Australia to last me a lifetime :).
See you all on campus this fall!

Haha! I bet it gets CHILLY down there, huh? Dude, but Bates would be SWEEEET. I just keep scowering their website to find things that make me even more excited about attending it, heh. Man, I love their menus, hahah. I spend a lot of time on the dining website, lol.

And as for Colgate, you're probably write--they probably are much stingier with aid; Bates was GENEROUS! Hey, question: ever been to the Bates observatory?? If so, how is it? And how visible are the stars at night? :P (Yes, I am a guy whose always lookin' up, heh.)

Oh, and do you guys have like MSN Messenger or AIM? If you do, could you post your SNs? Grazie, amigos :D

I got into Bates as a transfer. I am very happy. Bates is an awsome place. I'm from Saratoga Springs, NY (just south of the Adirondack Mountains) and currently go to Binghamton Univerisity (State U. of NY). I am a physics major and love outdoors stuff. Anyway, I'm not sure between Bates and Bowdoin yet, but I really like them both. The people at Bates seem really cool.
Congratulations to all of us!
Bates is awsome
Jack

Well, it's finalized! Since I've been rejected from Colgate, I'm going to attend Bates come next year!! :P Cool stuff, no? I guess the only thing that could stop me now is if I don't get the loans my dad applied for, which is highly unlikely cuz he put hour house on mortgage (God, he's making some serious sacrifices for me..) Anyhow, so everyone, do elaborate on your interests and such...

WoW...just scrolling down this page is like making me go WOW...Bates is going to have one amazingly diverse class!

I have yet to decide which college im going to because its a tie between 3. One of my schools has given me a fin aid package and its really good, the other 2 are left. Bates is one of them, so I dont know. It all depends on the aid package...

I just hope everything works out for the best. If i decide not to go to bates, i still wish u guys the best of luck! Ill be posting around and be here for the while, until the decision is made! Take care guys!

Hehe, true--this year, it will be a decently diverse class, although Bates isn't known for its diversity. But, this will be a good and welcomed change for the college. And hey, thedreamer, which other colleges are you looking at? Oh, and everyone, just share some things they've heard about Bates: anything and everything. I love that place. The only thing I have against it I guess are the dorms--they look somewhat weird, haha. But that's probably because I'm coming from having lived in a Latino country for like 3 years :P Anyhow, post and share! haha :D

Hey my desi brotha! lol...(from pakistan..;)..) Thats why i said that bates is gonna have a diverse class..:) haha

Well, my top 3 are Penn State, Univ of Rochester and Bates. Rochester has offered me really good money which im pretty pleased with. PSU and Bates havent said anything as of now. So, im just like waiting to see what happens. Its like whoever I ask give different opinions and their choices and as of now i think its like a tie between all 3.

The only drawback that I personally see or my parents see to Bates is that its prettty far away from NYC. I dont know the exact time, but still..(if u guys do then tell me)...and the location isnt "that" appealing to me...rest, if Bates was somewhere else I wouldnt haven thought another time...

LACS have their own positives and univs have their own...so, wherever u do end up, it will be a good thing nonetheless.

Bates is about 2 and 1/2 hours away from Boston - so I guess that would be, what, 5 or 6 hours away from NYC.
Just a guess, don't have exact figures in front of me at this time.

Oh ok...well boston is about 4 hrs i think...i dont know...But seeing that going to Toronto it takes 10 hrs, i think going to Maine would take about 8 hrs...I dont know...thats my guess....

Oh another question for u guys...do u know how many students were admitted into this years freshman class? How competitive was it compared to prior years?

hey, i figured id just jump in. Im trying to decide between bates and lehigh. Though bates looks like the place id want to be, it seems really small and enclosed. Lehigh seems like it would have a lot more going on, and might be more accomodative to my potential major ideas of physics and history. But then again, bates would definitely take the LA education to anothe rlevel in two completely different subjects like those.

Well, personally, I don't know much about Lehigh. However, I do know that my Physics teacher graduated from there with a Bachelor in Science (Physics). So, I suppose it might be true that they're more open to a Physics major. I, personally, want to major in Math and Astronomy, and am a little put back by the fact that Bates offers so little astronomy classes. But, as 'thedreamer' said, every LAC has its pros and cons, and wherever you end up going, you'll most likely have a good time academically and socially.

Hey, I m pretty sure that I will also be a member of the Bates class of 2009. Go Bobcats!!!

Anyway for UNC183, here are some differences between Lehigh and Bates as far as I know. Lehigh has lots of frats and is a little bigger, and I think has engineering as well. Bates is smaller with around 1700 students and a friendly open atmosphere. Both aren't in the greatest locations, but I know Bates has a lot of on-campus activity and is less than an hour away from Freeport and Portland. And if you're big on rankings, I think Bates may be higher although Lehigh is technically classified as a university while Bates is a liberal arts college.

I'm from california and I'm still trying to decide whether or not to go because my parents say that it's better to go to UCSD because its more well known. I'm trying to tell them that it's only because we live in California. I keep reading stuff about Bates and it seems to be the perfect place for me but I haven't visited so I'm afraid that it won't be when I get there.
What is Bates' reputation in places other than socal because I need to show my parents.
