I just heard this today so I thought I would post it here and give some of you new Cornellians a head start. According to one of my profs who sits on the committee that choses the summer reading book, the book for new freshman is Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. I hope this helps out anyone who is interested.

good to know...

Its also announced on the front page of www.cornell.edu haha

...and I thought Summer reading ended with high school...boo

this is my first ever summer reading. but i go to school in canada. lol US schools are EXTREMELY different

Things fall apart-- a great novel by a Nigerian author.

I am in India and dont know a thing about summer reading. What is it? Does one need to read this book and then take a test on it or something or is it optional? (pardon me if i am sounding too amaturish!)

I think you write a paper on it? But, yeah, all incoming frosh are supposed to read it.

There's no paper or test you have to take on the book. The point of them giving a summer reading assignment is so that everyone freshman on campus in the beginning of the school year will have something in common and something to talk about. It sorta unites us :)

ohh, and by the way i just bought the book, its not that long, you can easily read it on a three hour car ride when you're coming up august 19th (or before if you're not a procrastinator)

I'm a procrastinator...

You're "supposed" to read the book. There is a large discussion/meeting to discuss the book during orientation that's open to everyone. Obviously, they're not going to know if you don't go and only a few people out of your entire class will get to talk. Be warned however, some of the writing seminars may use the summer reading book.

you shouldn't have bought the book. cornell will send a copy to you.

Cornell give something for "free?" WOW. What happened to that bursar bill for $0.18 that was mailed in an envelope with a 37 cent stamp on it? haha

haha...yeah, the book is a really easy read and its short. coincidentally, we read it for my ap english class as well, so i just finished it. it's a little annoying, but on the whole it's not so bad.

yeah, well u see i would read it now, or at least wen it comes in the mail(neone know when its supposed to arrive?) but like ill probably read it, and forget everything by aug, so ill probably start reading 1-2 weeks prior to aug 19, so that i still remember. Nebody else seem like its going to be a bad book..despite the fact that EVERY1 says its not bad or good? lol, I still have doubts, but im glad to hear such good reviews.

lmao

i never read my book or wrote the paper for it haha

It's an easy book but not too exciting. We read it sophomore year. I think it's a good selection by Cornell considering the problems they have with "overdriven" students.
