So, I hear through the grapevine that, as of last week, Swarthmore '09 is still over-enrolled by quite a few students.

By how many? Does the April fools joke about having 500 more come true? Will Myrt have to pull all her hair out? (Or Myrt's replacement - I forget her name)....:)

Didn't they get some from waiting list?

By the way, did you hear the very sad story: death of Tariq Fischer, Swarthmore freshman?

No, was he class of 2008, or 2009? Is there a link to any article?

Where do you hear these things, eh...?

over-enrolled? I'm not surprised, Ride the Tide was amazing so I'm sure it convinced quite a few others including myself to come to the school. They won't be kicking any of us out, will they? Maybe my nightmare of living in a Mary Lyon triple will come true... :shudders:

I've heard Tariq's name before I think he was class of '08. That is very sad.

Tariq is '08. A close friend of my daughter. I once gave Tariq a ride from Yale to Swarthmore. Very nice well-spoken and polite kid. Writes to Phoenix often. My D is depressed. She refused to go to work and calling and emailing friends around trying to arrange a memorial service. One problem is their friends are scattered around the world during summer. Here is a news link:
http://www.nbc10.com/news/4723049/detail.html

They have 9 more incoming freshmen students than their target. I heard through daughter's gossip channels.

I found the Augusta, GA newspaper article about Tariq Fisher. He and two friends were driving one of them to Atlanta Airport. Middle of the afternoon, seatbelts fastened, no alcohol. Heavy rain, hydroplaned, lost control on the Interstate and crossed the median into the path of an oncoming semi-truck. All three killed.

It is so sad when something like that happens.

That is very sad. I just read some articles he had written. Used to write for the Sports column in the Phoenix.

How very tragic. Life is so fragile, and sometimes so hard. I am very saddened to hear this news. I will keep the Swarthmore community in my thoughts, especially your DD, northeastdad.

The Swat community will be in my prayers as well.

As for the overenrollment issue, I had no idea. Perhaps we will just have to play a class game of musical chairs to decide who gets to stay and who has to go.

That's odd that the one poster's son had gotten off the wait list. They must have known by then that they were over-enrolled.

northeastdad sorry to hear about your d's friend. That must be so hard for her.

Andi:

Maybe some of the '09ers who visit Arador's site have heard of other waitlist acceptances, but I have only heard about the one. I have to assume that there was a specific slot in the class mix that needed to be filled.

They want to be over-enrolled at the end of May to accomodate "summer melt" and end up at the targeted class size (383 this year). I gather there has been little or no melt over the last month -- probably a reflection of the apparent lack of waitlist action across the board at elite colleges this year. Summer melt typically results from a deposited student getting off the waitlist somewhere else.

I don't think that being over-enrolled for the class of '09 would put any strain on the capacity of the college. The class that just graduated was a relatively large one and the rising junior and senior classes for this fall appear to be somewhat smaller than usual. However, the larger than expected number of incoming students isn't the news a those of us with sons or daughters on the sophmore housing waiting list were wanting to hear!

my friend got off the waitlist, but he didn't accept it. He will be heading off to Dartmouth. But, yeah... Swarthmore definitely took some people from waitlisted applicants.

my sister wanted to go to Swarthmore and got in but for some reason, she decided to try Dartmouth out. Now she wants to transfer to Swarthmore.

Well I guess they're not technically 'over enrolled' then. They just created a slightly larger class for the sake of rounding the class out. My interpretation of 'over enrolled' would be that they didn't really have the room for all of the kids. Surely if they were struggling to accommodate the number of students in the class of '09, they would have waited longer before taking anyone off the wait list.
