Cornell University

NYU
Stony Brook Honors College
CUNY Hunter Honors College

Your ECs are good but your rank and number of APs/Honors is a disadvantage. But you have really strong points so I’d say you’d have a little chance at Cornell.

Sorry if I could not give you a substantial answer, I am not a pro when it comes to these.

I’m gonna apply for Cornell too man. You’re gonna need to bring up ur SATs to at least a 2100+. Maybe take the ACTs and some more SATIIs. ECs are pretty good but you’re gonna have to work on the GPA for the first half of Senior Year. Are you going to ED/EA for any of the colleges or just go through the regular applications.

It can be tough to shine in Brx Science. But you’re aren’ts so strong academically and EC-wise. Get each section over a 700 on the SAT. To diversify your subject tests, I personally would not take Biology…perhaps US History would be better. You didn’t take too many APs, yet your GPA isn’t so high. I don’t think an INTEL STS class for math matters so much…it’s really the awards you got out of doing research that matter the most. your ec’s didn’t shine either.

Cornell University (ehh)
Johns Hopkins University (ehh)
Washington University in St. Louis (ehh)
Carnegie Mellon University (ehh)
Vanderbilt (ehh/maybe)
Wesleyan University (ehh/maybe)
Carleton College (not familiar with Carleton)
NYU (maybe)
Stony Brook Honors College (likely)
CUNY Hunter Honors College (very likely)

If you want a shot at JHU, you have to take 2 more SATII’s. And yes your rec/essay will have to be awesome because it needs to supply for the lack in merit awards. Also, MVC is after Calc AB/BC, did you take the AP Exams of those classes?

Thanks to everyone so far on your responses.

@needtogetin: I might ED to Cornell if it will improve my chances. I’m torn though because there is a higher chance ED-ing but I’ll stick to my GPA, but if i don’t ED I’ll probably raise my GPA even higher and in the process lose my ED-chance.

So what should I do? ED for the given higher chance or NOT ED and raise my GPA?

@Harrokitty: At my school, we are given the opportunity to take Multi alongside with Calculus. It’s a specially made course so that it is feasible.

I’d like to point out that my freshman grades are lacking, but my sophomore and junior grades are MUCH higher. Also, The 4.0 GPA scale I calculated was according to:

A = 4.0
A- = 3.7 and so on

If it was according to:

A = 4.0
B = 3.0 and so on

I would have a 3.93/4.0 from sophomore/junior year. It really is my freshman year grades that are dragging me down.

id say your grades and test scores are your biggest issue… especially coming from a school full of asians with amazing scores

not much different from zoomx. the thing that I am going to same is that you are overall pretty good, the only that that could be a problem is the fact that, since you come from such a well ranked school, others from your school applying to these places might outshine you. Your GPA and test scors aren’t bad, but they are not going to really stand out either. You will really have to play up your good ECs and family situation to make up for the areas of your application that might seem to be lacking compared to others.

For Cornell, Vanderbilt and Wesleyan, I think they might be a bit of a reach. Your SATs and GPA aren’t fantastic, but they can fall into the average category. Coming from a low-income family, and being bilingual might be a hook, so don’t leave those out. Adversity can come in handy. Your ECs are good, but make sure you show a real interest in doing them. Not just random things, like a lot of applicants put down. I can understand your interest in helping people of your ethnicity, and the math work, but what about orthopedics? Overall, I think you can be a strong applicant. Raise those SAT scores, and that GPA, and I think you have a shot. But then again, I don’t work in admissions, so take everyone’s advice here, including my own, with a grain of salt. Best of luck!

My elaboration: You are Asian and your SAT is low. Your class rank is in the top 35%? You need top 10% to pretty much even be considered. Just being honest.

I believe you just need to raise your SAT score, and you will be fine of making the universities you listed. You have a REALLY good chance of making it, because of first generation and excellent EC’s.

You are in a very hard math class, that most students don’t take in high school, only the brightest.

You do have a lot of things going for you, with the definite math skills, Asian background, and fluency in a language other than English. However, like others have said, the rank is kind of low. for your schools:

Cornell University - low reach
Johns Hopkins University - middle reach
Washington University in St. Louis - middle reach
Carnegie Mellon University - reach
Vanderbilt - low reach,close match
Wesleyan University - not sure on this
Carleton College - match
NYU - match
Stony Brook Honors College - match
CUNY Hunter Honors College - match
