Told you. :) Party school + smart people = good shiz. haha

Hello. I'm perry from south carolina. I'm applying ED to the college of arts and science as a psychology and journalism double-major. I've always dreamed of living in New York City and the idea just gives me chills. I am way to excited.

A few of my concerns:
-I tend to be a little shy at first. I'm worried about meeting people if I don't completely throw myself out there. I'm totally open to be friends with anybody but I'm worried about not fitting in.
-I'm straight. So, i'm guessing I will be in the minority of guys at NYU. Unlike other southerners, I'm not a homophobe, so it's all good.
-I'm southern and I have a noticeable accent. But I'm not ignorant.
-I will be very far away from home - like 12 hours driving distance. I will only be able to see my parents like 2 or 3 times a year.
-I don't drink and I don't smoke. I have no problem with parties, though. I plan on taking advantage of the New York nightlife. I don't mind being around alcohol, I just choose not to drink.
-I can't afford NYU. I am going to graduate with major debt.
-I hope I get in.

I'm super excited about going to NYU (if I get in, that is) and I can't wait to get out of south carolina. Good luck to everyone.

quick question :

applying for transfers process starts at the same time as applying as a freshman? Is there early decision for transfers as well?

Hello everyone! I'm Erin, blonde girl from Santa Clarita, CA (right near 6 Flags if you know where that is and if not.. near Los Angles). I am applying ED to CAS double major in Journalism and most likely Cinema Studies. And God, how I will do anything to get into NYU! It's been my dream since I first visited NY 3 1/2 years ago and fell in love. I can also agree with frozenlight89 that my Sex and the City obsession had a big contribution to it all.. haha.

I'm freaking out and mainly worried about getting in. I feel like I have a decent chance but my SATs are too low.. and also the money issue. Financial aid and loans will definitely be a life saver!

So what's this about a minority of straight guy's at NYU? Is there a large gay community there? Ah I hope so... as GSA President at my school and living where I live, everyone is straight. Hopefully NYU will be more diverse in that area.

I highly doubt straights guys are the minority at NYU. It's just really diversed because the school's so big that it might seem that way. I mean, there are a ton of Asians at NYU but they are certainly not the majority. :P

Hey Perry! Sup, haha I'm going to be in deep debt too, Tisch is like $5 thousand dollars more expensive than the other NYU schools. And it'll be good to get away from the parental units don't you think? Unfortunately, my parents can visit me whenever they want if I get in. <_<

What up Erin, another blond? That's never a bad thing haha. Your SATs can't be that low, you sound like a smart girl lol.

Speaking of loans, has anyone thought about what company to borrow from and stuff? I mean, you'd have to shop around to get the best loan right? It's basically like a mortgage

Yes, chris. I would like to have some separation from my parents. But 12 hours away is a little much. Most everyone from south carolina goes to USC (and I don't mean southern california) or Clemson, so the max anyone really goes is like 3 hours away from home. I am breaking major bank with NYU. I haven't thought about where to borrow from, though. I'm pretty sure my parents are going to pay for most, if not all, of my tuition, but they said I will have to pay for graduate school myself and my living expenses will be very tight. So I probably will have to take out a loan of some amount.

I'm with you, Erin. My SATs are definitely my weak point. I hope ED will help. I read all these blogs with these kids worried about getting in with their 1520s. Give me a break.

All of you would laugh if you visited my hometown. Every single person drives a large pick-up truck with something like "DIXIE BOYZ" stickered on the back with a confederate flag. Their idea of a party is drinking beer on the bed of someone's truck in a random field. You can only imagine how badly I want out.

Perry, I swear to god, you just hit the nail on the head for my stereotype for southerners! Do they go to HS football games every friday night and wrestle with pigs and stuff?
Also, on a more seriious note, well, kinda, lol.
I will be 17 when I am a freshman and during all the welcome week partying and such, so will I be able to go into any clubs?
Also, how do most people find out about all the parties? Like, through dorm rooms, or do frats and people go around inviting people, and such.

Haha, the high school football game attendance is very high indeed. I never go to any of them though - I really don't care to pay money to support the football team who are a bunch of idiots and are already glorified enough. But, the wrestling with pigs part..not so sure about that one. It could happen though, I just wouldn't know it. There are a few southerners who don't participate in these activites and actually have some sense..at my high school that would include about 5 people.
I was wondering the same thing about the parties. No clue. I've looked on the facebook class of '12 and they had advertisements on there but I wasn't sure whether or not it was bogus. I hope we don't have to be invited by frats.

Sounds like a good deal Perry. A lot of kids in NY go to cheap public schools, the SUNYs and CUNYs cause they want to save up money for a good private graduate school. I'm not worrying about grad, cause I probably won't go. Im going for a BFA in film, there's no point in me going for a MFA then haha. Probably going to just fly out to Cali, take the risk, and start working hopefully.

My SAT score from May is a 1290, I'm bad at math as shocking as it may seem haha. I've been preping and if I get high 1300s or just break 1400, I think I'll be okay for Tisch.

Haha we don't even have football at my school, we have a football field though but some kid died a few years ago or something.

Welcome Week, everyone will probably be about 17/18 and it's all organized by the students so I don't see why we can't get in. And it's inevitable that some people will sneak alcohol in.

Hey Perry, nice to see that their is someone else from a small town far away with big city dreams. Actually, reading your list of concerns, I felt like you were reading my mind. I won't be going home very much and I don't anticipate too many visits from my family so I'm going to miss them. I don't drink or smoke either (none of my friends do, its just not that big of a thing here, and I've always secretly wondered if we're weird or if life is a little more like teenagers in the movies in other places, because it isn't like that here). Oh, and don't worry about that southern accent thing, chicks dig that ;) I'm the one that should be worried, have you heared a Minnesotan accent? They are just about the grossest thing ever. I don't sound like some one out of "Fargo" or anything, but it is noticable to people from other places. And lastly, I'm shy too, but I'm hoping to find some others like my if I am lucky enough to get to go to NYU. It can't be completely filled with super partiers and outgoing people, can it? For my sake, I hope not. But I will attempt to break out of my shy shell, its not that fun of a place to be.

Perry and world traveler, at least you guys won't be across the country from your families! I'll be on the complete other side, CA - NY haha. But thing is that's what I want more than anything, to get out of CA. The one comforting thing though is my brother is applying to NYU as a transfer so if we both get in at least I won't be completely alone.. But I guess I can;t really complain about where I live, its not that terrible.. its just generic high school you see in the movies, everyone goes to football games, everyone parties and drink (not really me though).

And I have a quick question about SATs, I feel like I should already know this.. but why are SATs in the 1600 scale now? Like you all are saying 1290 and 1300 blah blah, is it just because the schools never converted over to the 2400 scale so they stick with the old one? I feel like an idiot for asking :(

And Perry I know what you mean! I have some friends who got a 1400-something and they're applying here! Crazy people.

haha yeah erin, it's insane. It makes me feel so stupid when I read those posts about how their 1400 is "on the low side." I know what you mean about generic high school. Everyone is pretty much the same person. As far as the SAT thing, most colleges were trying to decide these first few years after they implemented the writing section on the SAT whether or not student's other scores were comparable to their writing, or something like that. I think most schools still use the traditional 1600 scale, but a good writing score doesn't hurt. My writing is a 710 and my other two scores are 600 and 610, so I wish they would use the 2400 scale.

world traveler, I feel your pain. I'm sure your accent from Minnesota can't be that bad. At least whenever you open your mouth in a different part of the country people don't automatically label you as ignorant like some people do southerners. I've already broken out of my shell so much in the past few years but I hope I will have completely broken out of it if I go to NYU.

yeah, chris. I see why people in ny go to cheaper schools because of graduate school. I pretty much have to go because I want to be a clinical psychologist and that requires at least a masters. If my parents can pay for at least 3/4 of my undergrad then it should be OK.

have you guys thought about which dorms you like?

Erin- Is CA really that bad? Almost all of my backup schools are in CA (if I don't get in to NYU that is) and I thought they were mostly pretty nice. What is so bad that you want to leave so much? Or is it just that you want to get away from home? I know what thats like.

Perry- You wanna bet? People mock my accent where ever I go. They think we have Canadian accents, when really its just kind of a twang. I'm not labeled ignorant (as far as I know) but people show how ignorant they are by asking me what its like to have snow in July (which so doesn't happen, we are hotter here in July than a ot of places because of the humidity that can get close to 80% sometimes). And I haven't even begun to think about dorms, I don't want to get my hopes up too high.

And about SATs to however cares: I totally agree that 1400s are not low scores. I wish I had a 1400! I think that if you have higher than a 1400 you will probably gain acceptance or at least LSed if something else isn't great. I really hope that Gallatin is one of the easier schools to get into. I also heard somewhere that they LS people less, anyone know if thats true? Things would be so much easier if the individual schools would post stats about acceptance instead of just as a collective.

Hi everyone! I'm Alison from New Jersey (right by Princeton), and I'm applying ED to Gallatin. I love NYU and want to go there so badly, I love the city and living there would be a dream come true. I live like an hour away so I go to NYC a lot already (I was just there today!) but it's not enough for me haha. I'm hoping to study some sort of combination of dance, dramatic literature/drama, and journalism--I really want to become a writer about theater.
Perry and world traveler, I'm shy too! I'm hoping that I can break out of my shell and find people like me at NYU as well. Well, assuming I get in crosses fingers.

world traveler, no its not California as a whole. I'm just tired of living here and the people and want a chance to get away and experience something new and different. I mean I think part of it is the fact I have lived her my whole life and I probably take the advantages of CA for granted. And California schools are great don't get me wrong. But I'm sick of the hot weather and just the people around me and to me, NY is like heaven. And I just HAVE to go somewhere where there's rain, thats a definite haha.

Perry, so when they refer to the 1600 scale does that mean they don't consider your writing score? Sorry to ask so many questions, I feel like an idiot.. :/ And dang are you lucky that your parents can pay most of your tuition. I honestly don't have any money for it so I'm really relying on aid and scholarships and loans. And I actually did look into the dorms [I spend like an hour a day at least on the NYU website or researching NY schools, yeah I'm a nerd.. haha]. I really liked Third Avenue North, those looked nice. I think its one of the only freshmen apartments. That is what I'd like to stay in as opposed to the traditional dorms. How about you Perry?

And I'm also very curious about LS and what the difference is exactly. I know there are smaller classes and such but how's it different from getting in normally?

Hello Alison! Lucky you you're right by NY! ANd guys... no worries I'm in the same boat, I'm a bit shy too.

Hello I'm Sarah from western Pennsylvania (about 45 min from Pittsburgh)

I want to apply to Tisch for Film but i'm not sure if i'll get in. :\ i really want to go to NYU, seeing as the month of July i spent time in nyc for a film program wit NYFA. i have a 1470 for my SAT's and i've been told that they are too low for NYU, and i always feel stupid when people talk about their much higher scores...

I live in the middle of the woods and when i went to NYC i found out that i actually can do without being surrounded by trees.

I know one person who went to NYU but haven't asked her many questions about it. (she was in the film program and is now doing random jobs in the film industry)

Yes, erin. When colleges refer to an SAT scale of 1600 they are not including the writing portion - only the math and critical reading.

Haha, I did the same thing. Trust me, I've viewed all of the freshman dorms including the little 1-minute video that goes along with them. I am thinking third north too! Actually, both Third North and University Hall are apartment-style freshman dorms. University Hall is newer and a little nicer than Third North from what I can tell but it only has double rooms. I was sort of hoping to get a single room because I figured I would enjoy some space to myself after all the craziness of NYC and Third North has all types of rooms. But at the same time I am afraid I might cut myself off if I got a single and might miss out on the fun of having a roomate. I guess it would depend if I could find someone who I thought would be decent.

From what I understand, the Liberal Studies program is designed for students who are basically qualified to attend NYU but due to space limitations, cannot be admitted to the college that they applied to. Usually, they accept kids into LS who are lacking one fantastic qualification (good SAT, good GPA, etc). You cannot apply to the LS studies program, admissions simply accepts you into it whether or not you like it. I hope I don't get it. From what I was told, I think that if they offer you LS as an ED applicant, then the decision becomes non-binding and you have like a month to decide. I don't know how true that is, though.

hah you read my mind Perry! That was going to be my next question whether your promised to LS if you get in. Ugghh why can't we all just get into the school we want :[ I wish.. but I guess LS would be better than being denied. I know my friend got accepted to it last year (but I think it was still called GSP then cuz thats what she called it) but she turned it down for UCLA.

I was also looked at University Hall. But Third North offers single rooms too? That sounds very nice :] but I agree with you, I don't want to single myself out either and miss out on everything. And Third North is about $12,000 if I remember, and that's the estimate for room and board anyway. Plus some of the fresh traditional dorms were around that price as well, I think? Not too sure because they changed the housing site and costs aren't listed anymore. And thanks for that SAT clarification. I do have my blonde moments... haha.

Oh btw, did any of you guys get a letter in the mail from the admissions office? I got one the other day and it made me so excited just to see it! made me feel all special even though I'm sure everyone on the mailing list got one lol

Yep. I got a letter in the mail today! Actually, it was 3: a letter, a parent's fold-out brochure, and a fall visit fold-out brochure.

I am definately not looking at housing yet, because I haven't even applied or gotten in. If I do get in, I need to worry about money before which dorm I want. Don't wanna jinx myself by planning things like that out, I guess.

Hello...
I'm Kevin Matthew. I'm a senior in Columbus, Ohio, considering applying early decision at NYU.
I've wanted to attend NYU since my Freshman year of High School. Though after my scholastic hiatus, aka Drunken Sophomore Year, my grades were pretty much ruined. I had a 3.9 and went to a 2.0. Luckily I got into this program, Devry Advantage Academy, where I would spend my Junior and Senior years taking courses at DeVry. The only reason I enrolled in the program (besides getting away from the crazed high school environment I was in) was because I figured it was best for my GPA (all of the courses through DeVry would be weighted) and it was a free Associates degree (even if it is from DeVry). At DeVry I've kept a 4.0 and my high school gpa has raised back up to a 3.6 weighted. I'm not sure that I am going to apply because I am pretty doubtful of my chances. Also, I haven't taken any of the the sat subject tests and am unsure of whether or not I even have time to do that. haha Ah... It's encouraging though (and I certainly do not assert any offense with this) that there are people on here with less than perfect stats. I always see people with splendid test scores, gpas, and superfluous honors and ecs, talking about how they're not good enough. Well yeah, I should probably go check on those subject tests. Ah, wait, I found it. The deadline was yesterday? Should just register with the late fees? Taking it November first would be too late, right?
