hamster: won't you probably get a full-ride on bright future's for U of F?
[/quote]

Yes, I could go to any public U in Florida for next to nothing with Bright Futures, but I would like to get out of the South. My parents' income is low enough (and I have 3 siblings) that I expect a pretty good need-based aid package from most schools (especially Princeton and MIT) if I get in.

Furthermore, I don't want to do the same things most of the top kids at my school do. I want to do something different, and meet new people in college. I want to go to a school where I will be challenged, not where I will be the best of the best.

I'm sure many of the kids at top 10 schools feel similarly. Most kids of that caliber could get an education for much less in-state or loads of merit money at a lesser univeristy, but that's not what they're after. Some things are worth paying for.

hamster: that's how i feel. I was just curious because you put UF as a MATCH. it seems like UF is almost a safety and MIT/Stanford are not as much of a reach as you think

You're probably right about UF being more of a safety, but when I told my counselor that she thought I was being arrogant. So... yeah....

definitely subject to change but...
Brown/Columbia (co-first choices)
Cornell
Tufts
Duke
Boston College
Wesleyan
Rochester
SUNY-Geneseo or Buffalo (safeties)

haha, I love reaading all of you guys. Whereas, I'm probably going to Ohio University since I can't get in anywhere else with my amazing 3.1 (I can only get it to a 3.4 by senior year) and I really can't afford much since I'll probably be paying for college with whatever is saved and my own money...

I'd really prefer to get out of the States (and to avoid the American admissions process as much as possible), so I'll probably be applying to a few Canadian universities. The University of British Columbia is ideally where I'd like to end up. I'll apply to the University of Maryland, as well, since it's in-state, though I'm not incredibly interested in going there.

I've spent the past few days doing quite a bit of research, and it seems like my previous college choices aren't right for Engineering; I was taking a more holistic approach before. It looks like I'll be applying to:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (EA)
California Institute of Techology (EA)
Carnegie Mellon University
University of California at Berkeley
University of Pennsylvania SEAS

right now this is my list, though it's quite large at this point

*very likely applying
