Class of 2007

If you are logged on as a 2007 HS student or parent and have questions about Centre, I will be happy to try to help answer them. My daughter, CentreGirl, is a junior (class of 08) and often gets on here to help also.

I know there are a couple of open houses going up there in the next couple of months and early apps are due Dec 1.

My daughter is planning to apply. She really likes what she has seen on the website and what she has read about the school. The other schools she is looking at are larger (1800-2500 students) and less rural. I am just wondering what Centre is like ... how would you describe it? What is the workload like? What do students do to pass the time? What are weekends like? Does it feel claustrophobic after a couple years (I went to a very small school & never felt it was too small, so I know small doesn't always feel claustrophobic!)? Would a northern girl feel comfortable in the south?

She will eventually get to campus, but there just is no time until late winter. In the meantime, she hopes to meet with the admissions rep in November when he is in the area. Any insight you can provide into what Centre is like would be appreciated. WHatever you feel would help us understand what Centre is like would help. Thanks!!

It is a BEAUTIFUL campus--small and you can walk everywhere. It is VERY safe also. Rigorous academics and wonderful opportunities.
<i am="" just="" wondering="" what="" centre="" is="" like="" ...="" how="" would="" you="" describe="" it?="">

Heavy. This is a selective school and more than 50% graduate in the top 10% of their graduating class. Writing well is super important. If your daughter writes well (regardless of major) she will probably do okay there. Classes are very small so students are expected to participate. Also, because they are small students get to know their professors well and even have dinner/study groups at their homes.</what>

Pretty much the same as other colleges. They go to the movies, eat out, Lexington isn't far and my daughter goes there to shop. There are terrific performances on campus, sporting events, parties. My daughter is a junior and still loves it. There is a brand new athletic facility and lots of the kids work out.</what>

This made me laugh. We're in Nashville, TN but I was raised in NY and my daughter has always felt like a "northerner". Lexington/Louisville/Northern Kentucky is much more north than south. Louisville is 90 minutes by car, Cincinnati is 2 hours.</would>

I hope this helps. Feel free to message me anytime, I'm very, very glad my daughter has had the opportunity to go to such a fine school. The opportunities she's been afforded have been great. She's a member of the Bonner Leadership program, works as a Computer Lab Tech on campus, is majoring in sociology and minoring in religious studies. She planning to study abroad next fall...either England or France.

Thank you so much for the terrific info! I will be sure to contact you if we come up with additional questions.

sounds like a nice school.

I'm going to the november open house, and I have a theatre audition. do you know anything about their theatre program? or anything else that would help me at the open house?

I don't know anything, specific, about the theater department, except to say that they have a wonderful fine arts (theatre, music, painting/ceramic) program. The plays they put on are well done and fairly well attended by the students (and the community). Wait until you see the Norton Center (performing arts center), it is world class.

Enjoy your trip and let me know how it goes!

My son is a junior in HS and Centre is in our top three. I have heard only good things. Order their DVD; very nice. My son is interested in the theatre program. The people on the theatre thread suggest that it has a solid program. It is a BA drama program and not a BFA program. We are comparing it against Muhlenberg, which has a good program, Sewanee, and Hampden Sydney, and Beloit. I lived in Lexington KY and can support the comment that a northerner (I am from PA) will feel comfortable. In fact,as a northerner, I am encouraging my son to look south and to the mid-west because it is, on average, friendlier.
