Class of 2009 Audition & Angst

It is an overwhelming process. I think that one of the best things a parent can do is just try to help your kid be on top of the requirements for a school and the deadlines. For example, DS has not had a good concept of exactly when Dec 1 is! Several times I've explained that it is the Monday after Thanksgiving and he has been a bit taken aback! The screening CD is all done, and generally he's in good shape, but still he has to kick it into gear at the beginning of this week and finish these off. To stay on top of the requirements, you should go review (and printout if it helps) the list of what is need for each school and go through it with your child to be sure everything is under control.

It is overwhelming! I have twins, and last year the months from late Oct. to mid Feb. were the hardest for me since their first three months of life! Hang in there--

Good luck to all the kids auditioning on the early dates in the next two weeks! Let us know how things go!

This time last year we were all saying the same thing: applying as a music student is so much harder than regular college applications. And we all survived, as did our kids, all in very good college programs now, and mostly happy, so I hear. So, take heart everyone!

I will ditto that! Believe it or not, you will look back on the whole process and realize that it was exciting, exhilirating and fun. I know it's hard to believe when you're in the midst of multiple deadlines, travel plans, etc. But it really is worth it!!

Last year was so crazy for us. I took my Daughter to seven auditions. Now that I look back, I wish I had that time to spend with her again. The trips were just the two of us and I will never forget the car rides, plane rides, hotel stays, dinners out and memories that were made along the way. I will never have that time back. So...try to enjoy it and have some fun during the stressful audition time!

My son submitted pre-screen DVD to Juilliard on 15th (percussion) and I was wondering if anyone if anyone has any idea what percentage of pre-screen applicants are invited for live audition? Anyone with a percussionist who has auditioned and Juilliard or MSM?

I sent in my pre-screening CD for Mannes by the 15th, and I was wondering if anyone knows when we'll hear the results!? It's so hard to wait! Haha! :)

I don't know about percussionist....However, when my DD a vocalist toured Juilliard recently she was told that typically there are 600 applicants for voice....200 are invited back for auditons and 12 will make it in...(3 soprano which is what she is)....

Numbers might not be exactly the same for percussionist but should think the competition will be fierce. :)

good luck

theperformer-
I contacted Mannes to see if they received all of the application materials and they said all of the information should be posted on Dec. 1, including if d has been passed to audition live.

Phew: Three December 1 applications submitted, along with pre-screen tapes etc. Now DS has a break until mid-December to see if he needs to work on some Jan deadline schools. I don't think people have any idea what goes into applying to arts-related schools, especially a conservatory with a larger university attached....man, that was a LOT of diverse paperwork, essays, music selections etc. And that "unified" app isn't so unified--I expected it to be nearly identical--like the Common App. I hope the conservatories work toward that. We were SO glad DS was in the studio recording in August and Sept, rather than than during soccer playoffs or finals. He really had the luxury to concentrate on his repertoire for his first audition last week.

SJTH--you and your son deserve a big ice cream sundae or some similar reward. It feels great to conquer the complex task of applying to music school. I think your son is a jazz musician, too, right? Good luck and peace of mind to you!

Yeah!!! :D The last pre screenings have been sent off today! Now...auditions and waiting...ugh. I agree-I do not think anyone appreiciates what goes into applying to the arts until you have gone through it. D is basically just beginning when most of her friends have an acceptance (or two) and a decision made!! But, I must say, both of my d's are following a dream and a very strong passion which is something incredibly wonderful...not sure if the others can say that.

Congratulations for getting past the first stage. December 1st is a big day. My son applied to many schools for both music and (in case music didn't work) for academics. Doing both music and conserv. at University of Michigan and Oberlin was like writing novels! What always amaze me are the kids on CC who do all of it by themselves (sometimes against the wishes of their parents). I can't imagine the level of maturity and drive that takes.

Good luck with auditions!

yes, jazz drums, jazzzmom. He's got a busy week, so I'm glad for him, because he's nervous!

Long relieved exhalation....We made the December 1st deadlines but it was gruelling and DS was up all night last night. He decided to ahead with sending in double applications, one on composition, one on violin, piano secondary so it meant six apps to do by 12/1. Because DS is homeschooled, there was a lot of extra documentation required (of me). I don't mean to grumble, but some of the conservatories are asking for much more from homeschoolers than the colleges. Next up are the college apps, not due yet, but since the kitchen is already snowed under and DS is on a roll, he wants to send them all in tonight/tomorrow. At least all the CDs and essays are finished and the documentation, so it's really just a chinese lunch situation (stuff those envelopes). DS decided to leave the teacher choice blank for the time being. I hope that isn't a form of application suicide!

stringkeymom, I have noticed the different guidelines for homeschooled kids, and sympathize. Congrats on having such a motivated kid!!

I am so happy to be done with all of the Dec. 1 conservatory deadlines. Talk about a stressful Thanksgiving break! It is to be expected I suppose...

Now the waiting game begins...

S just got email from Juilliard yesterday that he is invited for a live audition in January! Very excited to make it to the next step. They gave him the option of requesting either Friday, Jan. 23 (10 am - 1pm) or Saturday, Jan. 24 (1pm-5pm, very limited audition slots available) Not specific times, just date, first come, first served. Anyone else hear from Juilliard?

Congrats, pukadad! What's his instrument?
