Class of 2009

Who else is applying RD? What are your stats? No one at my school has heard of Whitman, but I'm really interested in it.

I'm applying, have fine stats, Whitman is the local standard for the high achieving kids, only 5 to 10 go there every year my average senior class of 400.

Thomas is Willamette a comparable institution to Whitman? Is it held in the same caliber as Whitman in the eyes of the local high achieving kids?

Whitman is a great school and I am kind of from the area I don't know how it compares to wilamette but I do know that whitman is a lot harder to get into, I am applying RD:
GPA 3.8 uw (every AP except chem)
SAT 1400
Cross country/track
youth group
ASB
tutor
etc

asncoolkiemonstr - I briefly compared some items about Whitman and Willamette to answer your question on the Colgate thread. Local (NW) high achieving students place Whitman much higher on their lists than Willamette academically.

Thanks for the info!

Whitman>>>>>>Willamette

Sounds like it was already answered, but Whitman is regarded as well above Willamette by students here, and it sounds like by just about everybody. Both my parents went to Willamette, so I only ever hear how fabulous it was; Willamette sounds and seems like a great school, and two of my friends' sisters go there.

I am also applying to Whitman, but as an international student. I would love to learn more about the college from Tomas(someone who has probably visited the place and all)

is it true that the male to female ratio at whitman is really off-balance. I've heard it is like 60 some % girls.

i'm applying RD.

according to the Fiske Guide, Whitman is 44% male and 56% female.

that isn't too bad.... does anyone know if they are pretty generous with merit/need based aid? it is sooo expensive!

Whitman does award aid, to my knowledge...otherwise i wouldn't have thought about applying there!

YES--They do offer both merit and need based aid

I am from the midwest----how is Whitman's reputation among people on the west coast?? When I looked at schools on the east coast…you have your ivies and then schools like Williams, Bowdoin and those types. Is that what Whitman is like on the west coast??

Hey Stroper,
To be honest, unless you are in the college admissions "loop", not alot of people talk about Whitman, even on the west coast. But.....if you know what is going on, Whitman has a good reputation. Yes, it is a Bowdoin type school. As the guide book says, it is a "mega-sleeper"...good school, not alot of publicity (hence, higher acceptance rates than Bowdoin). Have you visited the campus?

yes---i have visited the campus. I fell in love with it!!! It seemed as if all the students were so happy to be there. The entire campus (faculty and students) acted as if they were one big family. (sounds cliche...but is not by any means). The feeling i got on the east coast was completely different from what i felt at Whitman...I enjoyed and can def. see myself thriving in an environment where the students care about each other and actually WANT to learn and helping others on the way.

I visited during the summer, so there were no students, but I loved the campus, too. It was just beautiful, and had a great feel to it. I think I would be really happy there, too.

I'm in southern Cali and the only people that have heard of Whitman are my counselor and the other people in my class that applied because my counselor recommended it. There's really not much a reputation for it around here.

Hi I'm from Southern Cali. The only reason why I know about Whitman is because the Whitman adcoms were doing a road tour with Oberlin College.

However, after watching a presentation about Whitman along with Oberlin, I found that Whitman is an excellent school. It is perhaps one of the best colleges on the west coast and probably the best in Washington.
