Class of 2009

I think its an amazing school as well---I am kind of glad its not that popular b.c i will only attract students who are actually on top of the college admissions game as well as truly wanting to learn.

I agree. Whitman may not have much of a reputation around here, but it is still an excellent school. I guess you could term it as a "hidden treasure."

Yeah...I think it is the best in Washington. Not really to compare to Pomona, or obviously Stanford (eventhough it is totally different type of school than Stanford).

I don't see why you couldn't compare it to Pomona, (though i don't know much about the school)...but i do know a lot about east coast schools and i think it can easily be compared with Midd and Bowdoin. I think the only thing that is keeping Whitman from a higher ranking is the acceptance rating (b.c its so rural). But this fall when i was looking at the Rhodes Scholars list, Whitman had one where as Bowdoin, Midd and a lot of other NESCAC schools didn't produce any...so that def. says something. I don't think Pomona had any either...I guess the more i read about Whitman the more i am frankly amazed

it is definitely the best in WA, I heard one of my teachers say it was the closest the northwest had to an ivy league, maybe an overstatement, but you get the point.

Sorry, Stroper, my post did not come out the way I meant it to. :)

Of course you can compare it to Pomona. But I am pretty sure that Pomona is considered the premier liberal arts college in the west, for whatever reason.

Also, as I am sure you know from visiting, most of the liberal arts colleges in the Northeast are rural as well (ever been to Williams?) So I really don't know what to attribute the higher acceptance rate at Whitman. Beautiful campus, great faculty, very supportive administration...what's not to like?

Is Whitman your first choice, Stroper? What are your other choices?

At this point I would have to say that my first choice is indeed Whitman. I also applied to Bowdoin, Midd, U Mich, Reed, U Chicago. I think I would actually do better in a smaller school environment actually….so we’ll see where I end up.

Whitman is definitely an undiscovered gem. And I think Whitties may are content with this since "prestige" can have its own darkside. It is a strikingly friendly, creative and supportive setting--and offers what I ended up seeing as a stronger curriculum and foundation for professional training than many higher "ranked" LACs or universities. I think the acceptance rate is held down by the extent to which some applicants may find it hard to resist the enduring prestige of east coast schools or fear about not having quick access to a more urban setting. It definitely takes a good sense of confidence, humor, or adventure to embrace the name Walla Walla and discover what a delightful region this is and to see how it contributes to the quality of the school.

Hey Stroper,
We are applying to 3 of the same schools...cool! Whitman, Bowdoin and Midd. I also really loved Midd. Did you visit the Bowdoin campus? If so, I would be interested in hearing your impression of it, because I did not. I

Okay by you people's talks, I am now questioning, Have I applied to a really competitive College? Is it actually fit for me?

my stats:
SAT I:1390
TOEFL:287
3 GCE A-levels and 3 GCE AS-levels
GPA:3.5(unweighted)
Great ECs
Job experience of a Journalist for the National English Daily
Nice set of Recomm.
Seeking Fin Aid!
What are my chances?

You would stand an excellent chance of admission I'd guess. Whitman is interested in encouraging international students and I think because they are not on a coast or in a big city they can be overlooked by students from abroad. They do not focus exclusivly on "stats"---and yours would meet their range anyway. So you've made a good choice...

You will definitely get in!!! I have no worries and you shouldn’t either!! A little off the topic, but my brother who is in college now has been raving about thefacebook.com. It is a service that links kids from colleges all over the U.S. (most of you have probably already heard about it), but anyways…Whitman College is not a part of it yet!!! If I go, I would really want to use this service, and I e-mailed one of the creators and he told me that if more kids requested that Whitman be a part of the facebook, then it would speed the process up. So….my request to you all is that you request that Whitman be added to the facebook! Here is the address in which you do this:

I'm a Whitman 2009 hopeful. XD I still haven't managed to visit but I'm anxiously waiting for April...

This thread had been dead for quite a while

Whitneylm---- What other schools did you apply to?? Lurkin--I thought Bowdoin's campus was really beautiful. I think it could be compared to Whitman. The student body on the other hand was get of preppy and pompous---that is what I felt at least. I am kind of mixed up with the exact details b/c I visited Bates and Colby on that Maine trip. I do know that Bowdoin is really cold in the winter and that there isn't too much to do once snow starts to fall especially since they are sooooo isolated. The dorms were nothing special by any means...but the food on the other hand was amazing. I think some of the best foood I have ever had at a collegeg campus.

I also applied to Reed, Seattle U, Western Washington University, Central Washington University, Linfield College, and Lewis & Clark. I was admitted to WWU, CWU, Linfield and Lewis & Clark.

Heh. XP I'm a real West Coaster.

Whitneylm---being a "real West Coaster" how would you rate Whitman's reputation?? Do a lot of high achieving kids from your school apply and attend??? What are your thoughts about the college??

Well, I live in Washinton state and Whitman is most definately the highest regarded school in the state (I get a lot of "omg Whitman is HARD to get in"). Its quite evident that its Washington's claim to fame (next to UW of course). I'm not sure about the high achieving kids at my school specifically, but I know that my counselor highly recommends the school... most of the kids in my area are Ivy-philiacs though and wouldn't dare consider a small LAC in WA. XD

Whitneylm - I was wondering why you didn't apply to UW or Univ. of Puget Sound?

All of my friends had really bad experiences at UW. I visited the school quite some time ago and just thought it was way too big. Plus, the idea of being one of 20,000 scares me. XD

I was strongly considering UPS for a long time and just ended up needing to pick which schools I was applying to and which I wasn't. So, my decision not to apply to UPS was really somewhat arbitrary. XP
