Class of 2010 college expectancy thread

I know it's quite early for this topic , but i'm curious!

Harder than this year? Same or maybe easier??

It's supposed to be about the same as class of 2009. 2009 is the peak, but afterwards is supposed to be a plateau...at the peak level.

If the economy continues to go downhill it could help you guys out...

I thought 2010 was supposed to be the peak? Regardless, though, it's gonna be a tough year... yay...

dang it...will the economy help us out drastically? or just a little bit? will HYPSMC acceptance rates go up just a little bit?

I don't think much will change, except perhaps in financial aid. I doubt the economy will actually make it easier to get into an elite school- if anything, they'll downsize, making it harder to get in.

well, there shouldnt be much of a difference between 08 and 09. based on birth rates though, 50k less people were born in 92 than in 91, and the government estimates that the 10 graduation population will be just above 07 levels, with 08 being negligibly higher than 09, if that means anything. so id say that itll be around how its been. but i mean, i havent really even noticed any difference these years. i mean, 50k people out of over 3 million doesnt make a huge difference when it comes to getting into college.

This isn't within our control, so let's focus on what we can change in our applications instead! :)

something else i think thats interesting is that at my school 09 has a lot more competitive people than 10 does. anyone else have situations like this?

Hmm I wonder, has anyone heard anything about if PSAT scores are expected to be up or down from last year?
My counselors seem to think it will be up (but then again the person I talked to seemed really confused).

trickysocksman, I think 50k more people is quite a big deal :)
Think about 5% of 50k being really competitive... 250 people extra applying to HYPSM

see that in itself doesnt make a whole lotta sense. since if you think about it nationally, half those kids wont even take the sat, and then why would you take 5% of that population? only the top 1% of sat takers will be legitimate hypsm candidates (some wont and so those outside of the top 1% take their place, so its give or take), so it amounts to .5% which would be 25 more competitive applicants to hypsm. not a whole lotta difference. since if you get rejected this year, it doesnt mean theres a good probability that youd get accepted next year. the difference is essentially negligible.

the difference that should be noted at my school is the fact that 09 is way more competitive than 10, and its something that seems to be going on at all of the schools in my city. anyone see this?

Maybe 5% was little big number. Oh well.. Anyway in my school, class of 10 is a lot more competitive
