Class of 2011 acceptance thread

Hey, I've been accepted.

Instate, white male
3.5 GPA
2230 SAT
I'm guessing honors program info will come with the snail mail.

Neonzeus: if your daughter wants to study biosciences, she should go to Pitt. They have a top bioengineering program, plus it is in-state tuition and a sweet campus and location.

Hmmmmm. Thank you. I think Pitt is moving to the top of the list as we learn more about schools. The list was Pitt (bioscience programs), PSU (sibling will be a Junior there), OSU (lots of opportunities and Columbus), Duquesne (pharmacy but expensive), SUNY Buffalo (cheap for out of state plus offers pharmacy & medicine), Ohio U (great rankings from its students), UCONN (closest to an Ah Hah moment -- loved the campus and 1 parent is an alumni, but the out of state cost is very high) and Toledo (friendly campus and pharmacy chances good, but 4th tier in rankings).

Congratulations to everyone who has been admitted to OSU! My kid's application was complete 11/1, but so far it's still under review (640,640, 700, 3.65 GPA with 13 college credits so far, 31 ACT, great recs, 3-yr Varsity letterman on championship team, bookstore job, etc.)

OOS DD accepted to pre-architecture. Applied early October.

I'm pre-arch, 30 act... haven't heard back. Probably because I applied Thursday night ;-) heh. I'm anxious!!! Hopefully I get news before Christmas, but I doubt it. I'm OOS, so it'll be interesting...

How soon should we expect the packet/letter to come in the mail?

My D's "online application received" date was 11-20. She got a call last night that she was accepted. She's an Honors College candidate and I asked if the admission was for the Honors College or the general university. She said she didn't ask. She did say the caller was from the Honors program... so should we assume...?

Neonzeus, My D chose Pitt over OSU. We are from Ohio. OSU has a good reputation and is getting more selective every year, but D didn't like the size of the campus nor is she into the football thing. When we went to visit they talked more about football than academics. Not that there is anything wrong with football, but she was more interested in academics. I have 3 siblings that graduated form OSU about 30 years ago. One loved it, one hated it and one was indifferent about it. As for Toledo, D didn't even want to look there. She had people calling the house recruiting her for nursing, but that wasn't enough to get her to look at UT. She felt that she had the grades and test scores to get in somewhere "better" I do know someone that went to pharmacy school at UT but that was like 20 years ago. She liked it. She married a doctor who also went there and then went on to Ohio College of Medicine for his MD. Ohio University is know as a big party school and they tend to be known for journalism. I don't have any real knowledge of anything else about OU.

I think you have to see the colleges and find that "fit" whether it be in state or OOS and has the program you are looking for. My D just felt like Pitt was a good fit and it doesn't hurt that their nursing program is 10th in the nation (better than OSU). Only nursing school in Ohio that is ranked similar was Case Western Reserve. Don't know if I was any help, it was just my humble opinion.

Stowmom -- Thank you -- this is exactly the kind of info that we needed to help put the choices into perspective (I didn't mean to hijack the OSU acceptance thread -- sorry everyone). I wish my kid had one of those AH HAH moments, but no such luck.

My spouse is terminally ill and I'll be trying to get 3 kids through college myself. The possiblity that a kid will make a mistake and lose credits by transferring or changing majors is scary. The info I get on these boards is amazing, and has been extremely helpful to try to weed down the choices knowledgably.

Hah, funny - "they didn't stop talking about football." That is exactly the reason why I am avoiding University of Florida like the plague (I live in FL). Ironically, they face off soon. OSU seems like much more of an academic powerhouse compared to UF, but that might be my mistake. Hmm.

Zacsrequiem, I don't want to burst your bubble, but football is just as big at OSU, if not bigger, than at UF. Not only that, but OSU is not considered an academic "powerhouse", at least not yet. You are basically leaving FL to go the equivalent of UF out of state, at a tremendous increase in cost, even with scholarships. We live in NY and my son was going to apply to UF also, but UF is tougher for OOS than OSU. The academic climate and perception is drastically improving at OSU and my son loved Columbus. Hope this helps.

Hey, what's with all the negative comments about OSU on the OSU thread? I'm a current student and I love it here. I am very interested in academics and kind of indifferent toward football. Actually, in high school I hated football, but now I have been to a few games and discovered that even if I don't know what's going on, it can still be fun. But I was also one of those straight-A-National-Merit-Finalists, and I have found plenty of challenge and opportunity here.

A girl in my honors math class is from Florida, turned down UF to come here, because she had the same opinion, that UF is way more interested in football than academics. OSU might like to use football as a selling point, but trust me, a lot (a LOT) of money goes to research and improving academics.

That's fantastic to hear. Literally everyone on my street (in Florida!!) is a huge OSU football fan and that's all I hear from them. All the buzz always seems to be about football, much like UF. From people that went to UF, all I've heard is how sick they got of the football, etc. It's nice to hear from someone who doesn't think football overshadows everything else OSU has to offer. That's great.

Oh, Barno, I don't hate football, but I want to go to a school that has a nice mix between the two. I like the atmosphere but like the academics as well. I have some scholarship money, so OSU OOS isn't very expensive (relatively) to me at all. I'd still rather go there than to UF, even though UF is tuition free for me.
