General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
Congratulations everyone! I'm very glad we all know now, FINALLY. Now for UCLA... :/

I'm amused by how many of us there are who say something along the lines of "good" or "strong" for the essays... not that I'm saying we're all crappy writers, but it's just funny that we have high opinions of ourselves XD

Yeah, the term "good" or "strong" is so relative, especially for essays and EC's....

unless I have an essay that I specifically like for whatever reason, I usually say they're "meh"... but I'm also the "no expectations, no dissapointment" person so... can't expect any more optimism than that from me XD there's also the fact that I don't remember most of my essays... haha

Better modest than rejected I would have to say...

^ I agree completely.

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:

I personally spent a good amount of time on my UC essays and thought that they were good, but by high-UC standards, they were considered average. Also, many essays have odd grammatical errors in them; I've learned from SAT Writing that what sounds horribly incorrect can be correct and vice versa, and many people may have written what sounds good, but is wrong, especially when read by a trained reader. I understand that most people think that they are above average, but by definition, that can't be so.
We all worked hard and thought up of good ideas for our essays, but while our essays may have been good or great, a lot of people had equally great essays, and so it is very difficult to know what "above average" is.

well "pretty good" is to me better than "crap i screwed up big time," believe me, i screwed up my essay on a big college and it still haunts me :( i'm lucky i answered the question correctly, lol

I'll say, I bsed the crap out of my Johns Hopkins 3rd essay (took 5 minutes of intense unflowery language) because I didn't want to go there anyways (parents forced me to apply to a private school). Eh, they're over the private craze and I'm not too fond of Maryland so we're all good =)

hahaha, let's just say i forgot to answer one of the short essay questions for my private school... strained eyes, online apps, it's easy to scroll down and miss that stupid, stupid question (i hope they don't hate me after this), clicking submit and going "NOOOOOO"

ouch. missing questions does suck :</p>

i am white, my dad's income puts me in the upper bracket greater than 200,000, and i have had no struggles that ucsd would have given me pts. for. i thought the fact that i am a well to do, white, suburbanite would hurt my chances severely. but no!!!!!! yeah!!!!!!!

essays: leadership in sports, boy state, caretaker of siblings

basically, i think i got in because of my wide, but deep variety of extracurricular's. I would not have thought I would be accepted with a 3.7 uc gpa, although my test scores were solid. I personally think the UCSD point system is ludicrous, but that is me. Hopedfully i can ride my wave of luck into UCLA, (but i doubt it).
