Can you get to the U of Cincy without a car? Is there shuttle between UC and Miami?

No, U of Cincy is an hour away or so. As near as I can tell, the only shuttle is at break times, and it goes to the Cincy and Dayton airports, for a fee, and requires registration.

There is a lot of talk between the city of Oxford and Amtrak right now to get Amtrak to stop regularly when it goes through Oxford. The more people that ask/support it the better.

Contact the city council AND Amtrak directly and voice your opinion.
This would be great not just for getting to Cinci but to major cities all over.

Amtrak stop would definately be beneficial in terms of going back home. However, it looks like there is no easy connection between two universities UC and Miami, nor it will be in a future. Having the car might be the only solution.

believersmom,

All I can say is that I'm glad that I ended up here at this school and have no regrets about attending here. I'm majoring in microbiology doing the whole pre-med thing. I'm actually submitting my primary application tomorrow and the long process will just start. I've been involved in quite a variety of EC's since I have been here: undergrad research, pltl chemistry leader, tutoring, greek life, volunteering, intramurals, and few other activities.

I would say that I really love how the students here have the work-hard-play-hard mentality. However, some students that don't party may find it difficult to find anything to do on the weekend because all of uptown will be packed full of drunks at night.

Regarding having a car on campus, I believe that freshman that live outside the 200 mile radius of campus are eligible for a pass unless one has a reasonable need for one. I brought mine (I live in cleveland) and rarely used it when I lived on campus (freshman year) except to go home on breaks or when I needed to make a trip to wal-mart. If you don't have a car and need a ride there is a bulletin board in shriver that people write on who are willing to give rides and it says the date they will leave and return.

If any of you have any specific Q's about classes, social life, organizations, ect. i'll try and answer them to my best of knowledge.

Corbis, did you do PLTL last year or the year before? Just wondering, because I think you might have been my leader two years ago (I was a workshop leader last year, and I don't remember anyone being a micro major).

I've actually never had a car during the school year, and I had plenty of things to do (and I don't drink). I will be a third-year next year, and I am not planning on bringing my car until I'm a senior. Even if you come in with sophomore standing, you will only be able to park in lots that are quite a hike from the dorm.

Anyway, you should stop by the Honors and Scholars table at breakfast! I'm the one with the bright green lanyard. We've been very lonely, and we like to talk to new students, even if they don't have any questions about scheduling!

Aussie-
Are you around all summer, or just for orientation?

I'm here all summer, and I'll be at all of the orientations.

aussie, I was a leader the fall of 2005...my group met in shideler hall

Currently registered for June 20/21...but need to trade if possible. An opportunity came up which possibly conflicts w/ the last two summer weeks of orientation, and there are no other slots available per MU. Anyone have June 12/13 that prefers 20/21? PM please. Thanks.

Aussie...Do they hold any "emergency" spots for last-minute registration? While my d. is registered, she now has a conflict w/ the date. MU told her to watch the computer listing, and that dates should open as people change their schedules. We've been doing that for about 3-4 weeks, but they've only filled moreso. The only dates now left open are the last two, which are also a conflict. She called the MU office, but they only told her what was free on the web (which she already knew). Is there something else she should ask? Thanks!

Sorry, I have no idea. I'm not part of the orientation staff. When you called, did you have any sessions in mind that would fit your schedule? That might be the next step-- call back with a few dates picked out that would work and ask if they could add you to them. As a worst-case scenario, I think there's an orientation in August.

I've enrolled with Miami for the fall of 2007. I'm set to major in microbiology with a pre-med focus. What is this Dual Admisson program with UC college of medicine?

wynsen, good luck with the microbiology major...i'm a rising senior micro major and very few of us make it this far (~45) and most don't have the best of grades compared to other science majors.

info on the DAP program http://www.med.uc.edu/hs2md/index_files/Page375.htm

Be aware that you still have to score well (27) on the MCAT which is not an easy task

wynsen, are you in DAP or anybody that you know? My D. is in a program and would be nice to know somebody else who is in at Miami. She also starts in the Fall in Zoology major. She got registered already. Apparently her major is also tough, since they did not let her to register for Honors Zoology and Chemistry - she had to choose, so she is taking Honors Zoology and regular chemistry.

Two of my friends are in DAP, but they're two years ahead. Even though I told students in every session to try to limit themselves to 2 Category A experiences, students should be able to handle both Honors BMZ and Honors Chem if they've taken both subjects in AP or IB. The workload shouldn't be too bad, especially since first semester chem would be 100% review if you've had AP. The biggest reason that your D was advised not to take both Honors BMZ and Honors Chem was probably because they're at the same time... :)

Aussiek, thanks. She actually did not have AP Chem - it was not offerred at her school. If she has an easy class first semester, then it is good for her - Honors Chem at school was one of her easiest classes. First semester at college is a huge adjustment period and overall will not be easy. Did your DAP friends take MCAT already? If so and if you are comfortable sharing this information, what scores did they get and how prepared for MCAT they feel?

We're rising juniors, so none of us have taken the MCAT. Some of my friends are taking it in February, and others are taking it in April. We're all doing the local Kaplan prep class. Of the Honors students last year (I think most, if not all, DAP students are in Honors), 80% were accepted into med school, so I would assume that the average MCAT score is in the high-20s to low-30s range. I do know some students who were in the high 30s last year.

Aussiek, thanks, sounds promising.

I just want to tell everybody that I got to meet Aussiek517 this week when my D had her orientation! Aussie was a great help in answering some of my D's questions about scheduling. Thanks Aussie. It was fun to meet you.

It was fun meeting you too, and I'm glad I helped a little! I also met inomniaparatus a few weeks ago. Now that I think about it, MiamiDAP and OhioGolfer probably know who I am as well.
