Class of 2011 Discussion Thread

Hi Everyone! :)

I just thought it would be fun and interesting to create a thread just for the Class of 2011. It's about the time for a lot of us to really start looking, so I thought a general discussion thread would be a good idea. What schools are people looking at so far? Where in the search process are you?

I’m looking mainly at American, Georgetown, and the university of Rochester (and some other schools as backups) because I look to major in Political Science. What schools and potential majors of you been thinking about?

There already is one in High School Life, but it’s filled with junk. So maybe this is a good idea…

I’m seriously considering the following:

MIT
UC Berkeley
U Toronto
Rice U
New Mexico Tech
Harvey Mudd C
Carnegie Mellon U
U British Columbia
U Michigan
U Wisconsin
U Minn Twin Cities
Waterloo
Georgia Tech
Purdue U
Stony Brook U
North Carolina State U
U Utah
U Pittsburgh
Colorado Sch Mines
Washington SU

I’m hoping to major in applied math, systems engineering, or nuclear engineering.

I’m looking forward to being a Photography/Art major.

Rutgers Newark-1st choice
Pratt-2nd
Parsons-3rd

Hi! Recently I’ve been wanting to be a social work major (which isn’t as common as you’d think, for undergrad)

I have no idea what school’s I’m interested in (Although, even though I do like it, I don’t want to go to penn state bc tons of people in my family went there, my brother goes there, and it’s what’s expected of me) but I think I’ll end up at a big state school.

Financial Aid, and money, is a big factor for me. (Which is why penn state would make sense again, but it doesn’t have a social work undergrad major) I have some money put away for college, and if I went to a school with the tuition that is about the same as Penn State, I would be covered. (Maybe debt free, but probably a little bit of debt b/c tuition will probably rise.)

I want a school with a good campus, and good school spirit. (It doesn’t have to be a public, but private schools tend to be more expensive.) It doesn’t have to be a huge school, but I really hate the idea of a small school.

Also, I’m not an extremely good student. I had decent grades freshman year (4.2 weighted GPA), but sophmore year it all went downhill, and therefore my GPA has suffered. (3.8 weighted)
I’m not taking any AP courses next year, and I should have teachers that are way easier this year as well. I took the PSAT’s last fall, and did average-ish (average in the real world, not the CC world) but I’m in the process of getting tutored for either the ACT or SAT. My scores should rise a good amount. (I’ll probably take the SAT though, bc I hate the ACT) I’m also not taking any SAT II’s.

Oh, and I live in PA.

Okay, I bet your all laughing at me if you’ve even read all of this.
Please, if you have any reccomendations of schools, let me know.
(I’ll be sure to try and return the favor if any of you want it.)

ALSO: Have any of you gone on any college visits yet? How did they go?

^ What about Pitt?

EDIT: I’ve visited UVa and Udub. I didn’t like UVa at all (creepy people, not my kind of social scene). Udub has a gorgeous campus and most people were nice, although there were a few questionable areas near campus.

I’ll probably end up visiting pitt, but so far, that’s the only one on my mental list, lol

Haha @ noimagination. I’m considering UVa, but I haven’t taken a trip there or anything. I’m from virginia, so I’m sure a lot of my friends will end up going there too. But yeah, if you’re not from Virginia then it’s kind of awkard because a lot of people are from NoVa and everyone already has friends and stuff. So that’s the one thing that sucks. =/

Anyways I really like Duke, Princeton, UPenn, Stanford, William & Mary, UVa (kinda?), & George Mason. My GPA is 4.1w 4.0uw and I’ll definitely be on a pre-med track in college. My only bad thing is my SAT scores…I feel like I started studying so late. >.< I just started this summer and I took it for the first time in June 2009 just to see where I’m at? Yeah, it was not pretty…

Lol, the HSL thread (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/711008-official-unofficial-class-11-thread.html</a>) isn’t that bad.

Anyway, I’m interested in neuroscience, English, and pre-law. My list of schools is pretty long: Harvard, Yale, Brown, Princeton, Columbia, UChicago, Swarthmore, Vassar, NYU (Gallatin), Rochester, and Pitt. Still looking…

I’m looking to major in Chemical/Materials Engineering

My schools are:
MIT, Cornell, Duke, Rice, UIUC, Lehigh, Carnegie Mellon, UC Berkeley, BU, Northeastern, and UMass Amherst

I’m looking to visit MIT (even though I’ve been there alot), BU, Northeastern, UMass Amherst, and maybe even Cornell or Carnegie Mellon

Yeah, I don’t think the HSL one is bad either, but whatever, the more discussion the better!

As I research colleges more and more, money seems to be a larger factor. If I want to be a social worker, I’m probably going to need to go to grad school. I realize that’s thinking ahead a lot, about a career that I frankly don’t know that much about, but I obviously don’t have financial freedom.

hello fellow 11er’s! Nice to see others in the same group as me, already looking at colleges. So far, the schools i’m thinking of are Yale (dreaaammmmmm school!!!), Princeton, Stanford, Amherst, Williams, Northwestern, UWMadison, Georgetown, American… I’m not sure which others. But hey let’s get the conversation flowing here!
Social worker, thats a hard job to get into, mostly because of the emotional toll. but that’s really great that you’re so willing to help people! I want to help them as well, but i’m looking to go into international relations, so on a broader scale then you, with alot less depth

As of now I’m interested in PR [journalism is similar is job opportunities so I’m kind of eh about considering that] and theatre. It’s become obvious to me that my love of theatre is never going away. The thing I have to decide over the next couple years is if I could ever see myself teaching it maybe, then I would look into education. Dream schools are Northwestern and Syracuse. And I’ll probably end up applying to UGA [I live in GA] unless when I visit it some day I find out I totally hate it for some reason.
The hardest thing to find is safety schools- including admission, money, travel, oh and I have to actually like it. Hah, any help in that area would be great but CC seems to know mostly about the top/well known schools.

I’m interested in biomedical engineering. Schools considering:

Brown
Yale
UPenn
Johns Hopins
Harvard
Duke
MIT
Caltech
Georgia Tech
UNC-CH
NC State

Best wishes to everybody! :)

In terms of college visits, what stage are other rising juniors in? Have you all visited a bunch of schools so far or are you waiting until further into your junior year?

I’m looking at chemistry or chemical engineering, probably chemistry though. Planning to get a PhD or MD afterwards. Planning to visit colleges next spring break in SoCal (UCLA, UCSB, UCSD, UCI). Thinking of applying just to UCs since the private schools probably won’t offer me much merid aid. I don’t think my scores are that stellar, probably SAT 20xx to 22xx, GPA 4.1-4.2UW, 3.8-3.9W.

My college list so far listed in preference:
UCSB-College of Creative Studies
UCB
UCLA
UCSD
UCI
UCD

'11er here; my top 5 are Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Princeton, and Dartmouth. Extremely high ambitions, I know, but note that my goals are slightly different; I’m trying to get recruited as an athlete (which is a realistic possibility at all of the aforementioned schools except for Stanford, damn Stanford athletes with their damn godly athletic abilities).

I’m undecided as far as what I want to major in. I think I am going to apply to all of the UCs and a few private schools but I will be more decisive on a school once I take the SAT test.

I’m looking at a major in either economics or political science. I am having somewhat of a tough time making a list because I also am trying to get recruited for baseball.

School list so far:

Fordham
Wake Forest
Villanova
Boston College
UConn
Marquette

When will you guys start visiting schools or have you already?

I haven’t visited too many schools yet, but I will probably go see a few more on long weekends and Spring break.
