class of 2011 EA chances

So i visited ND this April, and like countless other students, loved it. Is it ridiculous for me the apply Early Action?

SAT:2050(740 M, 690 CR, 620 W)
SAT IIs:none(yet)
ACT:31
GPA: 3.8 weighted (3.55 freshman year killed me)
Rank: 17/128
Other stats: should be NMSF (219 in ky)
School Type: Catholic boys school

extracurriculars include
varsity swimming 3 years, soccer 3 years, academic team 3 years, student council 2 years, NHS, intermurals, over 150 service hours a year with the red cross as counselor at leadership camp as well helping other red cross volunteering, helping with youth volleyball, soccer, swimming and basketball teams, altar server at mass for my catholic church, many small service things, and awards for academics and service.

what do you think about my EA chances. thanks

My son was recently accepted RD to Notre Dame with a 4.0 GPA and 33 ACT. He decided to apply Regular instead of Early on the advice of the Admissions counselor we met when he made his first visit last year.

The counselor advised applying for EA if your SAT scores were 2170 or above, GPA above 3.9, and class rank in top 3%. Given that advice, I'd recommend applying Regular Decision. Remember that a denial in the EA round means you're done, with no reconsideration in the RD pool.

Have you considered retaking the ACT? Pick up a couple of points to 33, and you'll have a much stronger chance.

Good luck!

thanks very much, i just retook the SAT, so hopefully i can combine or improve.

Kick butt in your classes! The GPA does worry me some but an upward trend will do a lot for you. Keep working on that and the tests but I think you have a shot. Good luck!

With grades/average/sat like yours, I would be more comfortable applying rd. Hopefully, your SAT score will be higher with the new testing, b/c you have to keep in mind that the average sat scores are around the 1280-1470 or so area and its always a good idea to try to get above the 75th percentile (but dont stress over it, just try your best). I aimed high and got a 1480, and im in btw. Also, you want to really go into your ec's, showing common traits between some of them, and try to really explain why you want to attend ND in your essays and supplementals. I believe that I got in based on my essays and SAT score.

Shoot, I didn't even answer your question in my first post, i am sorry!!! I would not apply EA but, as always, keep in mind that I have an anti-early bias unless you are a really strong applicant (long story).

ND's ea system works differently from other schools'. The situation in which you would want to apply early is if you are a very strong applicant sure of your chances of getting into ND and want the decision by Christmas. You should not apply early if you are "sure you want to go to that school and want to make it clear by applying early." ND's early action system works on first premise.

My daughter's combined SAT Jan and April are 1410 or 2130 (lots of distractions duting the math section of test two and the score went down-the testing site reported them to collegeboard) SHe is third in her class at this time and her GPA is 99.6 she really want to apply EA we are not sure what to do.

If she could get her SAT scores up about one-hundred points, she'd have a great shot. Just dont think its a sure bet, always assume otherwise. She should make sure that she emphasized other things besides her grades and excellent standardized test scores. Many people from my school with high averages were rejected because they did just that. I was accepted RD with a lower average because I did just the opposite, and emphasized what beyond school made me special.

First of all Kr, if you could create a new thread next time that would be helpful. There just won't be as many people that find your post here. That being said, do you know your daughter's rank? While her GPA looks great that would really help us in telling you what she should do. Thanks!

Her class rank is 3rd

okay, assuming that the class size is decent and that she has taken the toughest course load she could I would say go EA if she can get above a 1450 (old version). Good luck.
