Class of 2011-ED :)

ADMITTED!!! I can't believe this. International asking for aid....omg

Any other EDer?

Deferred. :((:((

Oh my god. It hasn't even really sunk in yet. However, congrats to you Blur!

hey gytoh.sorry abt that. But at least it is not a rejection. There is still hope. Mayb the experienced parents here can give you some advice about the deferment..hugx

wow, congrats! = )

that's awsome. I applied really early this year and have yet to hear anything from all 5 colleges (early actions)

what was your stat, if you don't mind me asking. Because I'm applying to smith as a regular and I just want to be realistic about my chances. Thanks in advance.

Gytoh, don't despair. It's possible that Smith wants to wait to see how your first semester senior grades turn out.

I strongly suggest that you supplement your application by writing a letter emphasizing why you are perfect for Smith, and vice versa. If you have any new activities or honors, list them as well. Take the opportunity over the next couple of months to strengthen your application; unlike RD applicants, you have been given a second chance to prove yourself.

Good luck!

Congratulations, Blur!

As you can tell, the parents around here are huge supporters of Smith. We welcome you to our daughters' "family."

Congratulations, Blur. I hope you get the aid you need & that you attend.

Gytoh, I know someone from my D's high school who was deferred and then got in. You've received good advice...let them know that you're still interested. If Smith is your #1, it helps to say so: "If I am admitted, I will definitely attend Smith College." And, as MWFN says, they may be waiting just to track your first semester grades. Hang in there.

Thanks upandop, MWN and TD..

Upandop, that is kind of like the overview of things, PM me if you want to know more or have any other question.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've already written a short note to thank the board of admissions for their time, and that to reaffirm that Smith is still my first choice college.

The thing is, since I live in Malaysia, I've already completed my high school (just graduated early December) and there's no way I can give them my scores for the final national exam till mid March or at best, late February. Perhaps they're waiting for the results of said exam...Hopefully. Pretty disappointed about getting deferred but at least it's not an outright rejection. Thanks again everyone.

i was waitlisted, what's the difference between being deferred and waitlisted?

That's strange, Merdavis. The waitlist is something generally used for RD, not ED.

Merdavis, I forgot you applied for transfer. You are on the waitlist for transfers, which means that those who got in must decline admission, or more matriculated students need to decide not to return, for a spot to open up for you.

A deferral is a delayed decision - that is, while the college didn't choose to accept the applicant, it also didn't reject her.

Thank you for clearing that up MWFN. I was confused as to why merdavis got waitlisted after applying for the fall early decision option.

I wonder how it works if a spot doesn't open up, in that I would be awarded a place in the Fall maybe? I was going to call the admissions office but thought it better to wait for the official letter in case some of my questions were answered in it, don't want to annoy them.

What I really want to know is how many people are on the waitlist. I read on the eds report, I believe, that the list isn't ranked, and from my standpoint it seems a bit like a lottery...

so does waitlisted basically mean I'm good enough for Smith, and basically admitted, I just have to wait for if or when there is room?

Being waitlisted means that you're good enough for Smith - but perhaps not quite as desirable (for lots of reasons: major, geography, financial aid, who knows?) as those who were admitted as transfer students. For all you know, Smith had room for only a handful of transfers out of hundreds of applicants. Being on the waitlist is indeed better than outright rejection since Smith has obviously determined that you could fit in academically.

Generally with waitlists - and I can't say this is true of Smith's - the admissions office has no idea how many - IF any - students will be taken off the waitlist. You will not be automatically admitted if another place opens up. While you can enhance your chances of getting off the waitlist by writing a letter re-affirming your desire to attend Smith (as I suggested for those who are deferred), you must operate othewise as though you won't get in. Is Smith the only place you applied for transfer?

You're just on the fence that's all. They're not going to reconsider your application until spots open up and they'll re-read applications for those who were put on the wait-list and decide who they want from there.

Think of it being on the fence with other people on the waitlist. You gotta wait for someone to climb back out and then look to the admissions to see if they point at you to come down on their side. You're not all the way there yet but they're not saying no yet!

Hey Blur, I'm a first year at Smith right now. From Malaysia but I've been in the states for a very long time now. I just wanted to let you know that there is one Chinese student from Kuching, and maybe a spare handful through Mt. Holyoke and maybe Umass-Amherst.

General Comments: I am so excited for Smith!

Hello, everyone! I was wondering if you could help me with a bit of a dilemma I'm experiencing. I was just accepted to Smith ED I without sending my senior grades (since they were not at all available). A. Does Smith expect me to send grades when I get them? B. My 3-year unweighted GPA was 3.6 and 1st semester senior year it should be 3.3; will this hurt me? Thank you and congrats to all you who have gotten accepted as well!
