Class of 2011 (Fall 07' admit's)

So, anyone else going to Merced in 07' or just me :-p?

I chose UC Merced over Davis, Irvine, and SB :-) (and no I'm not a local resident)

I'm on the "shared experienece program" so that should be interesting haha =P

Feel free to post if your going to merced in fall 07'

I am. filler

collegekid21 which campus are you on for the shared experience program with Merced? I would love to go to Merced, if their majors weren't limited.

Berkeley and UCLA offered me the shared exp. program, and I accepted both...so i can decide what one later...

LUCKY was merced your last choice, or did you just like what it has to offer...?

I had to choose between Riverside, Santa Cruz, SFSU, and SJSU. I plan on majoring in CS/CE. I got rejected from my 1st choice, UC Davis. Davis was my first choice because my parent wanted me to go there. If I had actually got in, I would've been showered with gifts and money.

Riverside
Pros:
-Pretty good Computer Engineering/Science program.
-Cheapish rent.
Cons:
-It's far away. (from the Bay Area)
-Bad city? (This is what I've heard, but I don't really care about the "city life" anyways)
-Smog (I could care less. In fact, I like the smell of smog)

Santa Cruz
Pros:
-Has a video game design major.
-Ugh.... it's near a dirty beach..However, I don't really get out much, if you know what I mean ;).
-Close to the Bay Area.
-Lots of people I know from high school are going there. (Could be seen as a con since I didn't really enjoy the company of the people in high school, the few people I did like are going to either CCSF or Cal Poly)
-Seen as the better UC of the UCs that I've been offered.
Cons:
-Not well known for CS/CE.
-Expensive rent.
-Weed/pot heads.

San Francisco State
Pros:
-Good film program. (I might want to do this if CS/CE doesn't work out)
-Don't need to pay rent. (Mooch off my parents for another 4 years ;D)
-A little bit cheaper than UCs.
-A cousin of mines goes there.
Cons:
-Some what looked down upon. (Because it's not a UC)
-I personally think the city sucks ass.
-Staying with my parents for another 4 years.
-Not well known in CS/CE.

San Jose State
Pros:
-Good engineering program.
-Located in the Silicon Valley. (So I assume it'll be pretty easy to find a job once I'm done)
-Cheaper than UC.
Cons:
-Some what looked down upon. (Because it's not a UC)
-High rent.

Merced
Pros:
-Seems like a quite town.
-Small class sizes.
-Close but not too close to home.
-Low rent.
-New building.
Cons:
-New. (As in not very well established)

I pretty much ruled out SJSU and SFSU at the get go because... welll.. their standards are sooooo low. I don't want to be stuck with a bunch of idiots. I know this kinda makes me sound like a prick, but yeah......(although I was torn between SFSU because I wouldn't need to move and it costs so with, not needing to pay rent and all)

It was now down to UCSC, UCR, and UCM. I ruled out UCSC because it's not known for the major I'm interested in, and the atmosphere. I ruled out Riverside because it was too far away. (if it was close, I would've jumped on it. I was seriously thinking about moving to Riverside) So it was down to Merced.

Basically here are the 4 reasons:
1.) It's a UC.
2.) Close but not too close.
3.) Small class sizes.
4.)I like the town.

be sure to keep us posted of your experience at Merced. have fun!

i'm going to ucm and am also coming from the bay area. Just curious, what is the shared experience program?

SEP is a way for Merced to enroll students who "just missed admission" into one of the other UC's. Walmendoza why did you pick UCM?

I picked UCM because it was my back-up school and didn't get accepted to UCB, UCLA or UCD. I wasn't very pleased with going to UCM, but now I realize that it's a place that offers many opportunities to its students. Besides, it's still a UC education from a great faculty.

Hehehe... let me guess your stats (just for fun). 3.2-3.3 GPA, 1400-1550 SAT (or ACT equivalent).

Am I close or way off?

ROFLCOPTER, and may I ask Lucky what yours were?

About the same as what I posted. I just wanna see how much people in Merced have the same score as me.
3.2-3.3 GPA
1500 something SAT (I took the ACT, got a 21, so I rounded up.)
ROFLCOPTER? .... ugh... okay... that's a new one...

ah i see, i had a 3.9 (4.3 W) and 1910 SAT

No...3.7 GPA and only a little bit off for SAT -1640(shouldve done better)
SAT II
Span.- 690
Math II- 640

You didn't get into Davis? Hmmm.... Davis admissions were very strange this time around.. I know a couple of people who had more than 10 AP/Honors courses, over a 4.0 GPA (due to the AP courses, etc) and high SAT score, yet they were still rejected. They ended up going to Cal Poly..

I hate davis with every fiber of my body. Good god are you joking? I think its worse than merced, in some aspects. I decided Merced---->UCLA/UC Berkeley was the by far the best option I had for myself

Well... personally I don't see what's so great about Davis, but there's something about Chinese parents from San Francisco. They believe Davis is just a notch below Berkeley (I asked my parents and they haven't even heard of UCLA, but they've heard of Berkeley and Davis) -- It's very prestigious in their minds. Plus it's sort of close to San Francisco. If I got in they would've probably paid the tuition and buy me a new car. :|

I didn't get into Cal Poly either. Yeah...although my stats were good, they weren't OUTSTANDING. I just thought that my personal circumstances like being a first gen., hispanic, from low-income family and others i'd like to keep conceiled would have opened the door for me. I applied into architecture for all my school, maybe now it make it more sense why things turned out the way they did for me. And before anyone decides to call me out...I KNOW MERCED DOESNT HAVE ARCHITECTURE. I'm planning on taking the engineering route for now and pursuing architecture down the road.

I didn't apply to Cal Poly, but I wish I had... A lot of my friends are going there.
