Class of 2011 Kalamazoo -- Who's going?

I'm happy to start this thread. My son has chosen Kalamazoo. We're all very happy with his decision and looking forward to his adventure at what we believe is a terrific school. It feels very good to get to this point after all the work and study it took.

Anyone else?

Congrats! And, congrats on getting to this point-- I'm envious. I think you are absolutely right about the place. My son is overseas with a school group right now, but he'll be making the decision soon. We are still awaiting a few pieces of his puzzle yet, but K is probably the best bet as to what he'll choose. I'm pulling for it.

That overseas trip might be just the thing that tips the balance for K. My son was on a school trip to London last December and he can't wait to take his next overseas adventure. The K plan with its foreign study component looks awfully attractive to him. Best of luck on your son's decision.

Congrats MilwDad! Glad to hear your son will be joining the K community! I remember the same sense of relief last year. It's already going by so quickly as son just returned to school from spring break and started his final quarter this week as a freshman. It's been an excellent experience so far. Just as Loren Pope promised...lol.

Hope your son will be coming to K as well, bigpicdad. Let us know what he decides!

so I've finally made my decision...
I'm going to kalamazoo in the fall!!!

Congrats to you too, VeganActress! Curious...which schools were you accepted to and what factors lead you to decide on K?

I'm going to K next year also. Wasn't a hard choice at all. I did a ton of research before hand so I only applied to K MSU and UofM.

Good for you, golferguy! So, with that screen name, are you a golf team recruit?

Nope, just a novice golfer

I was accepted everywhere I applied:
Centre College
Chatham College
Cornell College
Hanover College
Kalamazoo College
Lake Forest College

I pretty much knew I wanted the small liberal arts school, and pretty much all the school were around the same size. I really liked everything about kalamazoo from the beginning. My first visit I sat in on a class, and the professor took time out from the class to have everyone introduce themselves and talk about their experiences and opinions of the school. I was very impressed with all the students I met, everyone was extremely friendly. I like the study abroad and internship programs, some of the other schools I looked at left students pretty much on their own to find internships. I love their theatre program (I'm planning to double major in theatre and econ), and the contact from the department. I had great contact with my admissions counselor through the whole process (she even hand delivered my acceptance letter). overall it just seemed like the type of place they really care about the students, I liked all the students I met, and I just felt like it was definitely the right place.

I know what you mean about the feeling, i have the same one. My counselor brought my letter too, they're awesome.

The choice is not quite made yet, but that's what my son reports also. Parents, for our parts, sensed real attention paid to individual students.

Congratulations on your decisions, VeganActress and golferguy. I gather from your posts, actress, that you are from northern Indiana. Where are you from, golferguy? Somewhere in Michigan, it sounds like.

Theres a girl from my home town who is class of 11. Funny story is that she had god awful grades in highschool, a low GPA, and a couple of athletics. She got in by being so charismatic and interesting at her interview that they accepted her anyway. Funny but true,

well they like to look things other than scores and grades. did she have good essays too?

I always love these so-called "true" anecdotes told by someone on CC who, of course, knows the complete and total story about "this kid from my high school."

nope, average or lower across the board. (in responce to that other guy)

Oops, we have experienced a mild upset. The deposit $ went to Earlham by a nose over K -- generally based on son's feelings about the EC biology program. Mixed emotions here, but a strong feeling that he made a good choice.
Biology and Studio Art would have been wonderful at K. K is impressive and couldn't have been more supportive and helpful. Good luck and cheers to all. Thanks for the help and comfort.

Hey bigpicdad! Sorry we won't be meeting up with your clan next year for a meal at Saffron! ;) Have you scoped out a good curry joint in Richmond yet? Best of luck to your son at Earlham. Report in next fall and let us know how things are going.

I have a question for any parents of current students (or any current students here!)...

what is the spring/summer timeline like for incoming freshman? when do we get campus computer/email account access (I'd love to be able to look at what's going on around campus), and the summer reading and essays.... room assignments (I know these are pretty late), but if anyone knows about any of these things it'd be great!
