Class of 2011 Notification Timeline

Got mine today, too! I had such an awful, awful morning and spring break, but this has really cheered me up. :D

haha, yeah it was. they must have picked me out of a hat for the CV scholarship.
They are good, but Iā€™m not eligible for need based. oh well.

@loring
So either $8k or $8,500. Iā€™m not complaining either way!

I didnā€™t change my college choice from undecided to a school until March 7th. I realize I wonā€™t be considered in the first round of college scholarships, but was I still considered for the NMF scholarships? Thanks.

^I was ā€œundecidedā€ until late last week when a guy with national merit called me and said I needed to make a choice because they were considering me for a scholarship. I told him vandy and I got the $2,500 NM one in the mail a few days later.

Just got mine in the mail today. I only expected to get National Achievement, so this was a surprise.

I didnā€™t change my college choice from undecided to a school until March 7th. I realize I wonā€™t be considered in the first round of college scholarships, but was I still considered for the NMF scholarships? Thank

The first round of college scholarships will be sent only April 27th. So you will be considered for that. If you had changed it by March 7th, and you are being considered for the NMSC scholarship, you should know within a few days. Else you have to wait for the college scholarship.

The $2500 are state proportionate basis. So every state gets some scholarships. So I would guess that your state that there were not may applicants. For example, in states where ACT is popular and not many take SAT, you stand a better chance that a state that many take the SAT.

If I havenā€™t gotten my notification about the $2500 scholarship by now should I assume Iā€™m not getting it? If so, thatā€™s very disappointing.

^^^ Give it a few days, and if you have not received anything by then, turn to college scholarships.

For those who do not receive any scholarship, will they receive the formal notice? Thanks!

Got mine about a week agoā€¦sooo excited:)

@yd2011: I think they will send you a formal notice sometime in May.

The last date for changes is May 31. So any finalization of lists can only happen after that date. So notifications can be after that day.

By that time you would know. By the time you get to May the only scholarships left will be college scholarships and you can talk to your college about that. By that time you would know which colleges you are looking at and what scholarships they offer.

My counselor told me about my selection for national achievement recognition today, but I think I read somewhere that national achievement recognition precluded national merit? Is that true? Because Iā€™m well above my states merit cut-off, and I would definitely rather be national merit.

Yes you may be above your states cut-off for the PSAT scores, but you may not have made the cut for NMSCā€™s own $2500 scholarship. They have only 2500 of them and 1 in 6 get that. Hence you may have been considered for National Achievement, but this does not preclude you from college scholarships.

@GoldOwl: Thanks a lot. I have another question ā€“ if the admitted university does not join the national merit scholarship program, does it mean that university will not give national merit scholarship?

Yeah, I just realized this thread was for the class of 2011. Iā€™m at a different stage in this whole process than yā€™all right now haha, sorry.

Not sure what you mean. There is no joining the national merit scholarship program. You either qualify based on your PSAT scores (plus other factors) or you do not. If you qualify as a National Merit Finalist, you are eligible for scholarships from a corporation or non profit, from National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC, who is the administrator of the program) or a college. The first two types (corporation and NMSC) are transferable to any accredited college or program, a college scholarship is given by that college or university and can be used only in that college or university.

Which year are you in HS and have you taken the PSAT. If yes, what state do you live in and what is your score. Based on that someone might be able to help you a little bit more.
