I'm not kidding in the slightest. Chopping lasts all year (or it did in my time). As for the strictness to which the "form" of the chop was held, that varied. Mostly, if the Plebes were running and staying the hell out of the upperclassmen's way, no one really cared so long as their eyes were in the boat and they squared their corners properly.

you chop until Herndon! Back in the day (way, way back in the day) Plebes had to chop to class!

WAY TO GO, FOGHORN!!! :) very very

From Reef Points:

Chop: To double-time, outdated mass Plebe transit system.

Yeah, it lasts all year and is every bit as fun as it sounds.

During AF week I was unfortunate enough to be one of the first to hit a pledged deck plate...next thing I knew, I was staring at the overhead 20 feet down the p-way.

When was this??

I've never heard that before, either.

The nice thing about Navy, versus the other SAs, is that we keep our shenanigans inside the hall, and out of the public eye.

Exactly. That was the policy way back when also. Up until right before I got there, everyone marched to class. I walked. Just had to stay off the oblique sidewalks.

Wait, I'm confused. Do plebes have to do this everywhere all the time?

Plebes chop in Bancroft and walk every where else EXCEPT on the curved walkways. Plebes only rate straight walkways and they don't rate sitting anywhere on the yard!

The first thing my son and his buddies did immediately after the Herndon climb was to run down the curved walkway and plop themselves on the benches by T-court!

They also marched to mandatory chapel services on Sunday's. Chapel services were part of the moral development of midshipmen at the time.
