Class of 2011 stats

Hello! I don't know about everyone else, but I'm super surprised to have been accepted. Like I seriously didn't think I had a good chance. So naturally, I'm curious as to whether or not I'll fit in at all next year. I've also very curious about what goes on in the minds of Yale admissions and would be interested to really see what they look for and think is important. So, if anyone wouldn't mind posting their stats, that'd be great. I know everyone else is curious as to the admissions process too.

I took this from the 2010 post:

Use this format for posting decisions.

I'll get us started

Stats:
SAT: 2060 total - 730 math, 700 ct, 690 writing
SAT IIs: 760 math II, 670 u.s. history, 630 chem (chem isn't my thing)
GPA: 100.47
Rank: 10th in a class of 650

Other stats:
Essays: one on my experiences with diversity at summer music camps, the other was a rationalization of why I am attracted to physics, considering my typical interests
Teacher Recs: great I'm assuming
Counselor Rec: great

Location/Person:
State or Country: NY
School Type: public - 2400 students grades 9-12
Ethnicity: caucasian
Gender: female

Other Factors and Extra Curriculars: I've played the cello for 9 years and the piano for 11. I attend a weekly Saturday music intensive in Manhattan, have spent my summers at music camp. My dad went to the Yale School of Drama and my uncle went to the School of Forestry. And my cello teacher is on the faculty at Yale.

General Comments: I'm pretty sure my music got me in. Although I am a good academic student, I don't consider myself the typical Yale quality. Especially my test scores.

Actually I got my SAT scores mixed up - 2060 was an older score. It should really be 2120. :-)

Stats:[ul]

[] Essays: very good, one about how my father hunts and that it's a socially frowned upon activity where i live, and another about observing two of my closeted friends and comparing their experiences to mine as an out person.
[] Teacher Recs: Both very good, i'm practically best friends with one of the teachers who wrote mine, took 2 of her classes, was her lab assistant, stream monitored with her over the summer, did science olympiad with her for four years and am a student coach on the team, and she recommended me for the columbia science honors program and an audubon society scholarship i got (all the same teacher!). The other teacher seemed to like me, so it was probably good.
[] Counselor Rec: She said she tried hard, so it was probably good

[/ul]Other Factors and Extra Curriculars: Science Olympiad, Gay Straight Alliance (president), Math Team, Student Govt, Class Officers, drama stuff, Columbia Science Honors Program
General Comments: I put my application together at the last minute, but i was very happy with it. Considering what a procrastinator i am, it was strong.

Ack, I couldn't get the formatting right. oh well, I tried.

Stats:

SAT: 2310 (800W/800CR/710M), although it was a 2230 when I applied (I used the ACT actually because I wasn't confident enough in my third SAT II)
SAT IIs: 760 lit, 700 us history, 640 math ic (embarrassing, I know)
ACT: 32
GPA: 3.93 UW
Rank: 1

Subjective:

Essays: very good. My admissions rep wrote at the bottom of their generic "congrats" letter that my essays were among the best he'd read all fall.
Teacher Recs: Good, good.
Counselor Rec: Glowing
Location/Person:
State or Country: Kansas
School Type: Public, 1200 students
Ethnicity: White

Other Factors and Extra Curriculars: Debate (national awards, state champions), forensics (national and state-level awards), Allegro con Brio (a traveling treble choir), editor-in-chief of school newspaper, class president for three years, a ton of volunteer work, some other stuff

General Comments: Thrilled beyond belief (still) and can't wait to be there. At this point, I'm pretty much 100% sure I'm going to end up at Yale.

Please don't do this. You are in. Who cares how you got there? It just might make other people who are admitted, think they should be, or didn't get admitted, not feel so great. What good purpose does putting this info up? None.
A very hearty congratulations for your hard and excellent work that got you to Yale, but please skip this stuff. Thanks.

..This isn't for self-glorification. It's so other people can have a comprehensive listing of stats for people who were successful in getting in. I know that when I was applying, I desperately wanted to see that kind of stuff, even if it wouldn't help me or my application. Why's it so bad for us to post stats? EVERYONE does it in EVERY forum, and it's certainly not hurting you in any way.

Ditto, i was just trying to be helpful!

I agree with jegan3. I am a junior and as jegan3 said, desperately want to see the stats of people to get in in order to give myself an idea of how successful applicants are like. I applaud your effort in helping us(college bound juniors) to find a bit of insight!

the thing about stats like this is that sure, they give you a good idea of what kind of students are accepted at yale but by no means should anyone feel inadequate because they don't have all of the same credentials. as someone who received a likely notice of admission from yale, i didn't have half of those scores and achievements. what i had to offer yale was just my own background and my interests. i remember being in the position where i felt like i had to emulate every single yale admit, do all of the right activities, build up my resume, etc. but in the end, those things weren't the most important factors in my admission. for all of you college bound juniors, find something that you love and are passionate about. don't feel like you have to compete on the level that everyone else seems to be on, because otherwise, how would you stand out?

Don't feel like putting up a big formatted stats chart.

2380 SAT
800 Math IIC, 800 Spanish, 790 Biology
Multi-generation legacy
The admissions guy said he liked my essays
The interview guy said I did well and he was happy I got in
I also sent in a successful music supplement. (The faculty member who reviewed my work liked it and recommended that they take me.)
I also did research biology stuff
Then I had a very solid array of extracurriculars

On the flipside, my grades were a little low.

The good thing was that I got into Yale doing things that I actually wanted to do. I liked my extracurriculars, I liked my research biology job, I liked my music stuff. I didn't like working all that hard in regular school, so I didn't stretch myself too much. I could have come across as being a little lazy, but I think I ended up coming across as genuine.

Yale class of 2008

Had Sats in upper 1300's So, like 690 verbal 690 math. It's been a while.
Recruited Athlete: I can't emphasize enough that lots of you are probably good enough at your sports to be recruited by Yale, check out www.yale.edu/athletics and fill out recruiting profiles even if you're the slowest runner on your team or whatever.

I had a ton of extracurriculars and 10AP classes from French lit to Ap Art to sciences.

Great essays, great recs.

Great interview. The guy said he'd write a glowing rec.
That being said NO ONE thought I'd get in. It really is a crapshoot.

Also...
I know people here with 1000s on the old SAT, I know people with 3.0 gpa in hs, and I know people who I CAN'T believe got in here. It's really about making yourself stand out in some way. No one cares about how good your grades are if you're boring, so show how interesting you are.

@ RedJayhawk - w t f ? wow, haha. it's HELPFUL, if anything. i'm a sophomore & these kinds of topics give me an idea of what students are like in other places and where i need to set myself to be in that range. so it's like motivation to me. if you don't like it, don't read it. that's it. but to other people, it's a LOT of help, so yeah. :)

Stats:

State or Country: Wisconsin
School Type:Public

Other Factors and Extra Curriculars:[ /b]
General Comments: I would say standing out matters a lot. My gpa kind of sucked, but I had perfect scores in science, which kind of closed the gap. Write an essay so that if someone read 100 essays in one sitting he would remember yours afterwards. If you are unforgettable you are undeniable.

A lot of it is connections...

SATs: 730 M, 710 CR, 590 WR
SAT IIs: Math II: 800, Chem 780, Bio 690
GPA: 3.75
Rank: 16/400

It is not all about the stats I guess...or connections for that matter.

[] Essays: I wrote my first one on my first piano performance in a public hall playing an entire concerto I had just learned like an internal monologue. My second one was about my experience teaching 50 students in China over the summer. I was...rather proud of them...
[] Teacher Recs: One from a teacher [good, I think]. Another from one of my professors that taught me at JSA Yale [good, I think too]. I also sent in one from my piano teacher and another from my english teacher last year because I was worried. :/
[] Counselor Rec: I'm positive that this was good.

Other Factors and Extra Curriculars:

I've been playing the piano for over 12 years and recently earned a few national titles, though I don't think I'm that amazing to be professional. I had a professional record my CD that I sent in so it sounded great. I really think that my music really helped me get in; also my interview was absolutely fantastic!

I mentioned that I loved the Whiffenpoofs and my interviewer went absolutely crazy happy. I was absolutely lucky. It must have been my interview as well because I was rejected from Harvard and Princeton, and while those were good, not stellar like Yale was.

General Comments: Congrats everyone. I know it's tough for those who didn't, but we are all destined to go someplace. Don't give up.
