Class of 2011!

Hey guys. I just found out Olin's not going to the waitlist, since they got 6 more people than their target of 84 to enroll. I was just wondering if there's anyone else taking the deferred year.

Good luck Class of 2010, don't have too much fun without me :p

According to someone I saw at Olin on Sunday, they waitlisted 20 students this year, and 10 took a deferred year. So, basically, you could potentially find 10% of your class out there already :p Good luck in your year off!

jeez, between 10 defering people and accreditation, along with the historical growth in applications, i expect a pretty low acceptance rate next year

What's the acceptance rate for this year? And any guesses as for what it will be next year?

Question: are deferred year students allowed to fail the Olin Challenge?

I heard there were something like 800 applicants this year, and they accepted i think 137. That puts it at 17%

For next year, given 10 deferred students, they're trying to have 74 more students enroll (based on this year's class target of 84). This year's yield was about 63%, so assuming similar yield for next year (and this is conservative, i think it will go up because of accreditation), they would be accepting about 117 people. Finally, given the annual increase in applications, it is easy to assume about 1000 applicants this year. This puts the acceptance rate for the class of 2011 at 12%. Don't quote me though, I'm not authorized to speak for Olin.

On another note, I think that as the number of applicants increases, the number of people invited to Candidates' Weekend should too. That way, the selectivity increase would not solely affect the competitiveness of the application round, but would also affect the competitiveness of CW.

greenstick, I'm pretty sure deferred year students are treated equally once they are there, but I'm not at Olin yet.

My daughter's experience has been that once everyone's there, there's no different treatment--if a student was waitlisted, deferred, whatever, everyone comes in equal. That's Olin culture.

chrisd is right.

Everyone is equal, no matter when you get in.

Matt, I'd be careful about using an increase of 200 applications for your estimate of the Class of 2011 acceptance rate. This year was the first time we had really seen a large growth in the number of applications. The past five years, it's fluctuated roughly between 600-700.

Additionally, if anyone has a question about the admission process at Olin and would like an official answer, feel free to call the Office of Admission at (781)292-2222 or email the staff: emily.roper at olin.edu, patricia.blanchette at olin.edu, allison.bahme at olin.edu, susan.johanson at olin.edu, teresa.kelleher at olin.edu or the new Dean of Admission, charles.nolan at olin.edu.
