Class of 2012 from Nepal

Yes, everybody have discussed the roles of awesome GPAs, high standardized Test Scores, Stellar Recos, tons and tons of Ecs and of course the all mighty personal essay ( Personal Statement as referred to by some) in getting into a College / University. But, In my opinion what many people tend to neglect, knowingly or unknowingly, is the “Match Factor”, meaning many students ( not generalizing hai pheri) fail to consider the question, " does the college that I am applying to is match for me ? " So, for an example a student with a business and management background in his A-Levels or +2 level starts applying to top liberal arts colleges inadvertently. The result- Rejection ( again not generalizing) causing sleeplessness, Lower appetite, pimples on your face and most damagingly, diminished self-respect ( all has happened to me). My point is, if only we would select the right colleges for us to apply then we would be able to face this daunting admission process with confidence instead of fear and incredulity… However, it is understandable that we international students have to depend on Financial Aid hugely which will undoubtedly influence our college selection. But still if we were only more careful, prudent and smarter in selecting colleges , we would suffer less.. I say “suffer less” because even if we are a perfect match for a college, there are high probabilities that we will get rejected simply because there is so much competition out there specially for international students like us who require huge amount of Financial Aid… Also, this explains why we end up applying to twenty, twenty five colleges… which is a huge burden, both financially and mentally for us especially all those College supplementary essay questions .

What are your opinions about the importance of " Match Factor" ??

regarding tranferring from a relatively lowered ranked colleges to big schools is too difficult.it rarely happens..its not so practical unless u have someone in US who can co-sign or co-borrow for you. yet, I suggest you not to take a gap year…even I sometimes feel I would have got into top notch colleges had I waited for one more year; however, when I weigh experiences I have gained and what I have cumulatively learned, I feel I have gained much more than what I would have gained had I stayed back in Nepal. I understand that it may not apply to everyone, so I am just sharing what I was told by guys who opted to take a gap year. I read the post by intltrans_007 and I partly agree with him. However, what I want to point out is that the success rate of acceptence after a year is really low. the stats is pretty disguised. only 5-6( max 10-12) guys getting good colleges and that appears good to some of you. To tell you guys, the international transfer rate appears higher than that.

Things are different for some of you..Some guys may have been rejected just because they were unlucky…might be they screwed up the sat or a simple test or didn’t prepare well for the essays…obviously, there are guys who deserve stanfords and mits who have been rejected..its good for them to wait..but what about the rest ??? 8-10% of them might be deserving..but what abt the 90%???they shouldn’t be so optimistic about getting into good colleges after a year…they should be realistic and should not be misguided to take a gap year(don’t take it harsh). come on, one year is a lot..that can really affect your mental abilites…

THe most important thing is that..if you come early, you get to know things early…you can plan your career well ahead if u r in states than from Nepal. there are hundreds of other universties that will give u good education in an affordable price…you can work and earn around 8000…at minimum…(conditions apply: u cannot afford to sleep 12 hrs or spend your money in buying liquours or dine in fancy restaurants out of laziness.). there are so many state universties that will allow u to pay in-state tuition…Public unversites might not give scholarships at first but they have a lot of scholarship for continuing students.. u can go to a college that will offer u co-ops or internships as part of the curriculum like northeastern…and universtiy of cincinatti…u make make 15000 on average to pay for ur expenses in co-ops…u can also apply to liberal arts colleges from here…one of my friends got into bates and other into brown…I can give u a lot of options…u can go to a community college first, make some money and later go to a university. there are so many options and u guys. u cannot afford to think stereotype…ivys and other private LAC’s aren’t the only good collges. every one cannot get into harvard or yale or stanford..be realistic..90% of nepalese students want full scholarship, and that is the reason why they rot in third-tier colleges…come one u’ve got to be courageous enough to take the challenge and rise upto it. Trust me, you will get whatever u want if u are motivated to get it. and don’t feel sad if u have to struggle in undergraduate years because u will learn a lot lot lot lot about life more than a guy who attend princeton on a full ride…grasp the time…don’t consfuse yourself thinking what you might get and lose your time…get ahead, set your aspirations…plan for it…work for it…and u will be successful…U don’t have to go to mit to be successful in life.

TOP “ELEVEN” APRIL FOOLS’ DAY HOAXES OF ALL TIME

#1: The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest

In 1957 the respected BBC news show Panorama announced that thanks to a very mild winter and the virtual elimination of the dreaded spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. It accompanied this announcement with footage of Swiss peasants pulling strands of spaghetti down from trees. Huge numbers of viewers were taken in. Many called the BBC wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti tree. To this the BBC diplomatically replied that they should “place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best.”

#2: Sidd Finch

In its April 1985 edition, Sports Illustrated published a story about a new rookie pitcher who planned to play for the Mets. His name was Sidd Finch, and he could reportedly throw a baseball at 168 mph with pinpoint accuracy. This was 65 mph faster than the previous record. Surprisingly, Sidd Finch had ever even played the game before. Instead, he had mastered the “art of the pitch” in a Tibetan monastery under the guidance of the “great poet-saint Lama Milaraspa.” Mets fans celebrated their teams’ amazing luck at having found such a gifted player, and Sports Illustrated was flooded with requests for more information. But in reality this legendary player only existed in the imagination of the author of the article, George Plimpton.

#3: Instant Color TV

In 1962 there was only one tv channel in Sweden, and it broadcast in black and white. The station’s technical expert, Kjell Stensson, appeared on the news to announce that, thanks to a new technology, viewers could convert their existing sets to display color reception. All they had to do was pull a nylon stocking over their tv screen. Stensson proceeded to demonstrate the process. Thousands of people were taken in. Regular color broadcasts only commenced in Sweden on April 1, 1970.

#4: The Taco Liberty Bell

In 1996 the Taco Bell Corporation announced that it had bought the Liberty Bell and was renaming it the Taco Liberty Bell. Hundreds of outraged citizens called the National Historic Park in Philadelphia where the bell was housed to express their anger. Their nerves were only calmed when Taco Bell revealed, a few hours later, that it was all a practical joke. The best line of the day came when White House press secretary Mike McCurry was asked about the sale. Thinking on his feet, he responded that the Lincoln Memorial had also been sold. It would now be known as the Ford Lincoln Mercury Memorial.

** #5: San Serriffe**

In 1977 the British newspaper The Guardian published a special seven-page supplement devoted to San Serriffe, a small republic located in the Indian Ocean consisting of several semi-colon-shaped islands. A series of articles affectionately described the geography and culture of this obscure nation. Its two main islands were named Upper Caisse and Lower Caisse. Its capital was Bodoni, and its leader was General Pica. The Guardian’s phones rang all day as readers sought more information about the idyllic holiday spot. Few noticed that everything about the island was named after printer’s terminology. The success of this hoax is widely credited with launching the enthusiasm for April Foolery that gripped the British tabloids in subsequent decades.

** #6: Nixon for President**

In 1992 National Public Radio’s Talk of the Nation program announced that Richard Nixon, in a surprise move, was running for President again. His new campaign slogan was, “I didn’t do anything wrong, and I won’t do it again.” Accompanying this announcement were audio clips of Nixon delivering his candidacy speech. Listeners responded viscerally to the announcement, flooding the show with calls expressing shock and outrage. Only during the second half of the show did the host John Hockenberry reveal that the announcement was a practical joke. Nixon’s voice was impersonated by comedian Rich Little.

** #7: Alabama Changes the Value of Pi**

The April 1998 issue of the New Mexicans for Science and Reason newsletter contained an article claiming that the Alabama state legislature had voted to change the value of the mathematical constant pi from 3.14159 to the ‘Biblical value’ of 3.0. Before long the article had made its way onto the internet, and then it rapidly made its way around the world, forwarded by people in their email. It only became apparent how far the article had spread when the Alabama legislature began receiving hundreds of calls from people protesting the legislation. The original article, which was intended as a parody of legislative attempts to circumscribe the teaching of evolution, was written by a physicist named Mark Boslough.

** #8: The Left-Handed Whopper**

In 1998 Burger King published a full page advertisement in USA Today announcing the introduction of a new item to their menu: a “Left-Handed Whopper” specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans. According to the advertisement, the new whopper included the same ingredients as the original Whopper (lettuce, tomato, hamburger patty, etc.), but all the condiments were rotated 180 degrees for the benefit of their left-handed customers. The following day Burger King issued a follow-up release revealing that although the Left-Handed Whopper was a hoax, thousands of customers had gone into restaurants to request the new sandwich. Simultaneously, according to the press release, “many others requested their own ‘right handed’ version.”

** #9: Hotheaded Naked Ice Borers**

Hotheaded Naked Ice BorerIn its April 1995 issue Discover Magazine announced that the highly respected wildlife biologist Dr. Aprile Pazzo had discovered a new species in Antarctica: the hotheaded naked ice borer. These fascinating creatures had bony plates on their heads that, fed by numerous blood vessels, could become burning hot, allowing the animals to bore through ice at high speeds. They used this ability to hunt penguins, melting the ice beneath the penguins and causing them to sink downwards into the resulting slush where the hotheads consumed them. After much research, Dr. Pazzo theorized that the hotheads might have been responsible
for the mysterious disappearance of noted Antarctic explorer Philippe Poisson in 1837. “To the ice borers, he would have looked like a penguin,” the article quoted her as saying. Discover received more mail in response to this article than they had received for any other article in their history.

** #10: Planetary Alignment Decreases Gravity**

In 1976 the British astronomer Patrick Moore announced on BBC Radio 2 that at 9:47 AM a once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event was going to occur that listeners could experience in their very own homes. The planet Pluto would pass behind Jupiter, temporarily causing a gravitational alignment that would counteract and lessen the Earth’s own gravity. Moore told his listeners that if they jumped in the air at the exact moment that this planetary alignment occurred, they would experience a strange floating sensation. When 9:47 AM arrived, BBC2 began to receive hundreds of phone calls from listeners claiming to have felt the sensation. One woman even reported that she and her eleven friends had risen from their chairs and floated around the room.

** #11: tox!c gets into Trinity**

It all started on Saturday 5th April, 2007, at 02:46 Am someone called transint_007 posted the following on the 140th page of the thread called Class of 2012 from Nepal:

“i know the two of them who got into trinity- one is toxic, and other is kusalpurie…”

then all the congratulations came flooding in…

jasonshah, “toxic!!! u got into Trinity??? great man…”

manasm, “toxic-rithhe got into Trinity?? wow!”

bocca, “Oho congratulations.”

MCCCLIII, “congrats toxic fr getting into trinity. 3 from sxc .great.”

then this morning even draj came to me “oie rithhe badhaio cha!!! trinity ma pako ho?? CC ma post garya raich ani hamilai nabhanney???!!!???”"

ani i am like, "whaaaa…???

then I laffed…couldn’t stop laffin…

“maile apply nai nagareko college ma kasari paye maile??? kasto achamma??”“”

so guys eat this: I HAVE “NOT” BEEN ACCEPTED BY TRINITY…IN FACT, I HAVE “NOT” APPLIED TO TRINITY…I HAVE “NOT” EVEN VIEWED ITS WEBPAGE…trans_007 seems to have mistaken me for someone else…hehehehahahahahahhhuhuhuhuhuhuhuu…this seems like a pretty late april fools’ day hoax hehe!

@ jasonshah, manasm, bocca, MCCCLIII: plz save your congratulations for later…

Disclaimer (if i can call this so): the above hoaxes, hoaxes 1 through 10 have been picked up from the website [Top 100 April Fool’s Day Hoaxes Of All Time](<a href=“Top 100 April Fool's Day Hoaxes Of All Time”>Top 100 April Fool's Day Hoaxes Of All Time) why dont u guys go through this, it is really fun!!

sorry it was a little too long

transintl_007 has already apologized for that in his latest post

ya know that…but didn’t see it…plus i did not wrote my post “asking for an apology”

btw i forgot to mention that i have been waitlisted by williams…now-a-days the thing that i hate the most is the word wait list and anything that is associated with it!!! waitlists suck

take risk of waiting a more year if u r sure to change/improve ur stats significantly. Except for work experience, internship or some sort of volunteer, you are not gonna involve in other significant ECs. Your GPA remains the same.

What you can do is beat the SAT…and write an excellent essay and most imp. find a match college…

like for REED: a very padante student works because the course load is extremely rigoros. and “why reed” essay is very crucial; can get u in and out.
WAsh and LEE: ECs and SAT very imp. A 1350 SAT and president’s position in lots odf clubs works.

Dickuinson, Connecticut, bard : They want to learn why you are different. What makes you-you; your individuality.

Oberlin : They love the fearless “the stereotype breakers” and so on

Your essay is way of saying them who u r.

Whether one should take another year gap after being rejected this year is a very complex and sensitive issue. I would like to give an example of a student from my high school.
He got 6 As in the finals and had a decent SAT reasoning test score and good SAT 2 score. First time, he only applied to ivy’s and got rejected or waitlisted from all. Taking another year gap, he again applied to most of the ivy’s and other safe colleges. He was rejected from all but got waitlisted by Tufts and Northwestern. Every day I saw him I could see frustration and hopelessness in him. Fortunately, he was accepted by both Tufts and Northwestern in July. But he had to suffer the pain of uncertain future for around 28 months. It must have taken a toll on him.
Last year, there was another student from SXC who got into Dartmouth and this year there are some who got into good colleges after two years gap. There is one who got into Stanford after waiting for quite a few years.
Although these examples show that people have got into good colleges, can we say that every one who waits for two years will certainly get into good colleges?
According to some of the polls, competition among international students is increasing and is expected to reach the peak in 2012 before it will start falling again.
Next year, there is going to be much intense competition than this year.
Can anyone claim that college gives more preference to the student waiting for two years than the students taking only a year gap?
However more competent a person can be next year by strengthening his resume and biodata, is it not possible that there will be more qualified candidates than he.she?
This concept of waiting two years has also influenced some candidates who have started thinking that they will certainly get into good college if they take a two year gap. One of my friend decided to take two years gap even before we thought of applying.
However, I do not want to discourage anyone who wants to take a two year gap. I sincerely pray to the god that everyone will get into top colleges.
If you have already decided to take a two year gap, then please start to work right from today. Start gathering work experiences and improve other aspects of your application. Good luck!

News has it that a student from BNKS got into TrinColl.

oh loads and loads of writing. looks like everyone have leisure time.

But i feel that this is the right time to start some discussion regarding the upcoming CA polls? How many cc members have their name in the voters list and how many are going to their home district to cast votes?
