Class of 2012 from Nepal

I dont think caldwell is worth the hype its been getting lately. It doesnt even have a physics major.

^^ i meant no disrespect. must be incredible to get in those colleges.

ramjet, do i know you? I think Bohora is studying medicine at NMC. I’m not sure.

hey skunk…
i know that. I won’t be applying in it…‘cadwell’ just fit in the sentence so nicely.
I believe if I go to caldwell the first thing ion my mind would be ‘transfer’. For better chances in ‘transfer’, i’d need to have gr8 gpa. And a good GPA without chemistry(i’m not sure) and physics…i don’t see it coming..

Jason, I was just commenting on the fact that so many students from SXC have Caldwell in their college list. Why go into a college that doesnt offer a major you want? Of course, some applicants may be looking for some other majors.

ramjet, how come you know sandeep bohara? you from Reliance as well?
and btw skunk, it’s KMC. i bet he’s topping there as well, like he did (very often) in Galaxy and Kendriya Vidhyalaya!!

Jason, the world is not bad with a big B. It’s just that she was exceptional so both MIT and Stanford wanted her.

let me tell you something guys:
I guess Caldwell is in your list of safety schools for most of you. There are like 30+ Nepalese kids here at caldwell, and it’s loads of fun. You have a kind of your own country here. You don’t have to associate with america-which is hard to do, especially there culture is highly different. You may think to yourselves that I’ve seen all those Hollywood movies, and I know nuff about the US. Well this is real life, filled with racist people who are hard to make friends with. Hence, Caldwell is fantastic social wise as you have a tight knit community among Nepalese. We have parties almost every 2-3 days, and it is very very exciting here. Getting good and drunk is not a problem in the US, but you have to get drunk privately, and you have to plead an over 21 person to buy you the drinks. The major problem is Caldwell College, it is not rigorous enough. Chemistry is like what we studied in 8-12 and so is physics. Mathematics has the worst teacher in history, and don’t come to Caldwell if you want to major in mathematics. You’ll get frustrated and quit. If you want to come to Caldwell, Biology and Business departments are the strongest and the toughest, and it is extremely difficult to score an A. There are like 20 Nepalese kids in the bio class and highly intelligent jamaicans and only one out of the total got an A in bio. And remember the students were SXC toppers and BNKS elites. I do not know much about the business dept. except it is considered top notch. And so is the psychology department. There are some inspirational teachers here, but you are bound to end up in a class with a A**hole teacher. So Caldwell is not a good option for Nepalese, especially if the cost is a problem. If you get full tuition, the cost of living in an apartment is as follows:
Rent-375
Electrcity-50
Bus-50
Mobile-40
Food-200
Laundry-20 etc.
So you probably have to pay around 8000 a year to sustain yourselves. And, no you can;t make around 12,000-14,000 dollars in summer, contrary to ordinary belief. After working your ass off, the most you can make during summer is around 5,000. And off campus jobs are illegal and highly controlled and on campus is rarity here at Caldwell. And if you tell ppl you are transferring they treat you differently. Nepalese have had a bad impression on Caldwell, except GPA wise, and I doubt if they will select lots of Nepalese. However, due to the huge number of Nepalese ppl here, Caldwell is much better to live in than even ivy leagues.
A word of caution-it is extremely difficult to get an A in any college, if it is in a ranking. You must have heard of Lee Uni.-which is a consultancy college. This semester our friends scored a gpa of around 2, and it is tough there as well as it is, despite contrary belief, a very good school. So if you think you are a deserving candidate, my best advice to you would be to take a year off and plan you colleges accordingly. If you get into a top 50 LAC or national uni, you are set for life. Education of the US is very good, and it will turn you into a better individual as well. Social sciences at Caldwell is very good, and so is bio(except for research wise-teachers are from Wisconsin-madision, columbia, u penn, nyu etc…and the bio as well as psychology department has a program with columbia university). Political science and History are other two absouluttely great majors here.
For all those, the reputation is not a factor. A engineering student from northeastern has a better shot at a job than an engineering student from Yale. You should research about your interests more, and appy to the colleges that have strong departments. It is tough to maintain a good GPA; you will have to put out several all nighters in a semester which will leave you frustrated. So if you consider a top notch student, stay back and apply to good colleges. My friends, who stayed back, got into trinity coll, gettysburg, and middlebury. And i believe several others will follow. Consider Luther college as your safety, it is a great school despite waht ppl say. If I don’t get in anywhere, I’m considering going to Luther as they have already given me substantial aid. And don’t think northeast. Sure it’s great, NY rights there, but unless you have cash, and tons of it, its very expensive. Choose wisely, and if you have absolutely any questions-from trivial details to life changing decisions plz ask. I’m there to help. This is a huge step in your life, and you should be highly careful and knowing. Best of luck with your college options.

And my stats were by the way
CR-690
Maths-650
Writing-670

Maths 2c, physics-800
Chemistry-750
top 5% of high school
Awesome list of ECs, most ppl were awed by my CV
Recos-mediocre to top notch
Essays- don’t know. Please take considerable time in writing a great essay.
I applied to 25 schools, accepted at 4(furman, depauw, sewanee-university of the south, and luther college). I chose Caldwell coz others did not give me much aid, plus my close friends are also here, and it is quite fun here. I got waitlisted at 3-gettysburg, grinnell, and WUSTL(deffered at ED1, waitlisted in Rd and finally rejected). And to let you know how unpredictable the US admission process is- I did not even submit the Gettysburg supplement, and I got waitlisted there. I did not seal my recos for Grinnell and I got waitlisted there. Carleton sent me a rejection letter with my wrong name and gave my my father’s middle name, lol. The decision time was nerve wrecking, but I got through it.
Transfer is tough game, and it is hard coz you’re always busy with school work and stuff. And there are a limited number of colleges that give aid to international students. So think carefully.
Again, best of luck…

Joshi,
Are u from Galaxy???

AAni, skunk maybe u know me…you must know me…tara I can’t disclose myself in this public forum.

Joshi, are u asmit??

rena-itsme
why do you worry so much about your SAT scores…For the class of 2010, two from nepal got into harvard with 1910 and Duke with 1860
I hope you have better SAT scores than that..if not, u r screwed :P

purshottam,

i mentioned it earlier. She must be incredible to get into those colleges.
But, let’s keep our finger crossed. Who knows, right now, where we stand? We could get into those reach reach schools too…

To class of 2012: All the very best for all the students .I don’t know about others but I still have 5-6 essays to write (must be more. See, i am not sure about that too)

And Happy new year. May this new beginning mark a glorious chapter in your life.

and about the SAT scores:
one into harvard: triple legacy
one into duke: bnks rank 1 and legacy factor

Which school would you be from trans_int007?

trans_int007,
where actually are you now???

rena-its me,
where are u applying ED2??

About Harvard and Duke, from my knowledge,

The guy who got into Harvard didn’t only get into Harvard. He was accepted at Bates, Grinnell and Haverford too. Though his SAT scores may seem mediocre, his ECs were excellent. He was in the same class as me in some subjects and he was really intelligent. He had several educational awards at the national level as well. Plus, I looked at his personal essays. They were awesome. He was also from the minority group in Nepal. He deserved it but was also lucky to get in.

Duke. The guy was one of the strongest in Sciences. He had scores of 90 + in almost all the school science exams and his only “weakness” was English, which was demonstrated in his SAT scores. However, it’s clear that he had stellar recos and academics (apart from SAT I). He got in, and now rocks at Duke (academics), or so I heard.

It’s always good to apply to a few big name schools (or more if your school list isn’t restricted as in the case of BNKS). You never know when you get in! Best of luck everyone. You have surpassed every other international thread in CC. I hope you continue it in the admissions as well. Best wishes!

@ everyone. MAke way for SSAT. ( The next SOLA in the making.) Applying to duke ???

@ramjet: when u have such reservations about disclosing your name, do you really think others will reply to your queries? please stop posting the names.

@ all: do your scores in individual subjects in school examinations make a considerable difference? or does your sat2 scores override the school scores?
