*just saw this and am a little worried… I scored a 229 on the PSAT in Washington this last fall and am going to be a senior this next school year. I took the SAT in May and got a 2320. I didn’t get any letter though. I should be something special, right? Commended, semifinalist, anything? *

you haven’t missed any steps…but…you should call NMCorp to find out why you didn’t get a letter in the spring.

This is worrying me. I got a 214 in Illinois (which was the cutoff for last year…ughhh), and I know that’s well above the cutoff for commendation. I’ve never taken the actual SAT - I’ve taken the ACT twice, and I’m signed up for the SAT in October. But when they told us about the PSAT, they never said ANYTHING about having to take the SAT to qualify for National Merit. Basically, should I be worried? I might call NMSC tomorrow to see what the deal is.

LovesBrown…I wouldn’t think you’d need to stress too much over taking the SAT. You don’t need to “match” your PSAT score to qualify for NMSF status (i.e. you won’t need a 2140) but you will need to achieve a qualifying score to “validate” your PSAT. Historically it’s been around 1960-2000 range. Although some students do better on the ACT than the SAT (or vice versa) if you scored well on both the PSAT and the ACT you should be fine.

I’m not sure when the cutoff scores for the class of 2012 will be formally announced, so you may just have to wait until mid-September when the announcements for NMSF come out. Illinois has been at 214 for the last 3 years so hopefully it will hold there and you’ll be in. Good Luck!!

^Thanks for your advice!
I’ve calmed down. I called NMSF and they said my school probably failed to give me my letter.
Now I just get to hope and pray that the cutoff for NMSF doesn’t go up. Please, class of 2012, show me what you’re not made of…
