the college website seems archaic!! Don't we have some tech guys to make it up to date?? The pages of majors all talk about the data from 2001.

mohak,

Don't worry! You can request course changes at any time by emailing the Registrar, Mr. Benginia, at benginif@lafayette.edu. Be sure to provide your "L Number" in any correspondence.

lafstudent,

True, some portions of the website have been largely ignored for years. The Office of Public Information, however, is making every effort to update information as they also work to redesign the site. The process is slow, but always ongoing. Believe it or not, over the past couple of years, the site has come a long way.

Once again, Justin, i appreciate your advice!

Thank you

I need to set up a bank account. Can you tell me what Bank has an ATM on campus or ones close by? I do not want to have to incur ATM fees.

twokids,

There is an ATM located on the ground floor of the Farinon College Center. It is operated and maintained by Lafayette Ambassador Bank, which has a number of local branches in Easton and other nearby towns.

Representatives from Lafayette Ambassador Bank will have tables set up on the first day of Orientation in the student center for those interested in opening a free checking account (no minimums, no yearly fees). I highly recommend setting up an account with them, even if you already maintain an account with your local bank. With a LAB account, you'll incur no ATM fees when you use the on-campus ATM.

Hey justin can't i do that when i arrive in the campus? or will the classes be packed if i don't do it now?

mohak,

Change courses now, while courses still have open spaces. While you could wait until you arrive on campus, you should make every effort to beat the "course change rush."

Justin,
are you at all familiar with the Residencr Inn Allentown in Bethlehem? If you are, would you recommend it as a good place to stay?

-mary

Mary,

No, I can't say I'm familiar with the hotels outside the immediate area. However, judging by the website (Residence Inn by Marriott Allentown Bethlehem: Hotel suites in the Allentown Bethlehem area Pennsylvania PA near Lehigh Valley.) it does seem like a decent (read: clean) place to stay for a night or two.

When will we get the schedule for the courses we picked?

ryanshroff,

A printed schedule will definitely be waiting for you in your campus mailbox. With that said, I'd hope first-year students would be notified of their class schedules a bit sooner to determine if course changes are necessary. If you take a minute to email the Registrar, Mr. Benginia (benginif@lafayette.edu), he'll get back to you quickly.

Also if I buy a new laptop will I be able to get Microsoft office installed on it when i arrive on campus by ITS ? If yes can I get it with a student's reduced rate ?

ryanshroff,

No, the Hardware Shop will not install Microsoft Office on your computer.

Your best bet is to purchase the software through the College at journeyed.com for about $75. Simply click on the AICUP link (Computer & Software Sales | Information Technology Services) and select 'Lafayette College' to take advantage of the discount.

Justin - Another course selection question. My son received his AP scores and will receive credit for 5 classes. He received a 4 in AP Chemistry. I just want to make sure that we are correctly understanding the CSS graduation requirements in the Natural Sciences. Per the guidelines, "two science courses are required - not necessarily in the same science". Since my son will receive credit for Chemistry 121 and Chemistry 122 are we correct in assuming that he has satisfied the Natural Sciences requirement? He signed up to take a Geology class, but we are thinking that he might not have to take it. Also, thanks to your advice, my son has decided to take the SAT Spanish subject test to try to place out of Spanish. We were looking through the orientation schedule and our understanding is that this test will be given on Sunday, August 24th?? There is no description of exactly what test will be given. Is there someone my son can contact to make sure that the SAT subject test is the test that is being given? Thank you very much for your help.
Nancy

Nancy,

A 4 or 5 on the AP Chem exam earns one credit for both CHEM 121 and 122, thereby satisfying the natural lab science portion of the CCS.

I am 100% sure that an old version of a Spanish SAT II will be administered as the placement test during Orientation. On the Class of 2012 website: "If you feel that you did not do your best [on the online WebCAPE exam], or if you did better than you anticipated and would like to try to seek exemption from intermediate or advanced (in order to fulfill general or major program requirements), you still have the option to take the SAT II on campus during your Class Orientation in late August."

Also notice how the placement exam is scheduled for exactly one hour on Sunday -- the time required of any SAT subject test.

Justin

Thank you, Justin for the information.
Nancy

hey justin
if by any chance my online placement test went wrong and I scored lower than my caliber will i be able it give it for next time in college or will they give credit for chemistry sat 2?

mohak,

If you didn't score as well as you had hoped, you should email the head of the Chemistry department, Dr. William Miles (milesw@lafayette.edu), to see if an SAT II score may be used for placement purposes.
