Class of 2012 Results: Celebrate, discuss, support here

^^Really, Thatmom?? In the past they've talked about giving out 100-150 of them. This year they say only 50 were offered. That would be incredible! Do you have some info that makes you pretty sure they only awarded 50? And yes, I am proud of that kid.

When I researched two years ago (and I don't know if I could find this information again), they said they awarded 100 DHS hoping to yield 35. When we went to the reception for the DHS at orientation, I would agree with that number. I "talked" to someone last year whose child received the DHS and understood that their letter referred to dropping the offers to 50 instead of 100. Enjoy the moment! It is a lot to grasp (lol).

Thanks, Thatmom! Absolutely enjoying this! The letter says "out of a field of over 10,000 applicants of unprecedented strength and quality, the committee was restricted to awarding Dean's Honor Scholarships to only the top 50 members of the incoming class". So, while it is still a little ambiguous, it does sound like they only awarded 50. How cool is that??

Way, way cool! Congratulations to you and your son! (Does he plan on accepting?) ;)

jym626, That is fabulous news! I'm sure there is much celebrating at your house! Does your S plan to take it or is he waiting to see what else develops? Any other merit possibilities out there?

anxiousmom and countingdown-
Thanks!
Don't know yet for sure what he is going to do. Still have some other schools to her from, so we'll wait and see. Certainly $36+K/yr is hard to sneeze at!!

It'll be hard for D to talk her way out of Brandeis' class of 2012 (not that she'd seriously want to)! Accepted today w/full ride! Whoo-hoo!!

Congratulations on Brandeis!

Congrats supermom!!
I have a dumb question-- When you say "full ride" do you mean tuition only or everything-- tuition, student fees housing, meals, etc. I am never sure if "full ride" means zero paid out of pocket, or if it means parents still pay something (we ahre having this debate in our house after s received his scholarship from Tulane)

Coming late to this thread, my D's results are starting to come in: University at Buffalo (full tuition + scholars program), and last night the yes! email from University of Michigan (no details yet). Happy dance at our house....Now just waiting for the April 1 results...
congrats to all for good news so far!

Thanks all,

@jym626 -- Full ride = the whole enchilada: room, board, tuition, fees as an MLK Scholar. We were offered a small loan as well, but couldn't quite figure out why unless for incidentals?

D received a few other full tuition offers/scholarship interview invites, but this was the first full ride merit offer not contingent on her naming the school as her #1 college choice in a NMSC competition. Plus - mom's got a soft spot for Brandeis (grew up in Boston), so her fate's all but sealed!

My dd was accepted EA at Yale in December, and received a call Tuesday night from a Harvard admissions officer letting her know she is admitted. Likely Letter should arrive tomorrow. We are thrilled out of our minds, to say the least!

D had been deferred ER at U Michigan...just received the email that she was accepted today!!!

Found out today that S was accepted to Chapman University in film production. He received a rejection from Florida State's film program last week, so we were feeling kind of grim. He didn't even get an interview at FSU, so I was thinking that he wasn't going to get into any film schools.

He was checking his status online when all of a sudden he yelled at the top of his lungs. I didn't know what happened. I got lots of hugs today from the kid who won't let me hug him much anymore. :-)

He's also been promised an Army ROTC scholarship there which will pay tuition, fees, books, and a monthly stipend. We just have to cover room & board!

What a relief!

Congratulations to your son timely! I hope he will do great things at Chapman!

TImely, that is amazing. I understand their admit rate for film production is between 8-12 percent. He was judged on his talent, absolutely. Their fillm production facilities are "cutting edge" (no pun intended), state-of-the-art.

ROTC scholarship to boot. This is great news!! Time to get the sunglasses and flip-flops, right? RIght in Southern California, near the film industry, too. Best wishes! Happy for your son!

And it's another bravo to both of you, for homeschooling together :)

Thanks, p3t! In many ways, I think homeschooling has been a big advantage to him in all this (even though he doesn't think so!). He would never have had the time to put into his film work if he had been on the typical public/private school breakneck schedule.

Also, he's doing all of his courses dual-credit at the cc this year except for an online AP English class. That will allow him to have a bit of a head start on his general education requirements, which is important due to his ROTC obligations.

With ROTC, he'll have to take a 2 credit hour class (which is easy...no homework) every semester for the first 2 years and then a 3 or 4 credit hour course (can't remember which) each semester of his last 2 years. Based on our older son's experience, the upper level courses are real classes with tests and papers to write. So, that's 20-24 hours of ROTC he'll have to do in addition to his other required courses.

One disadvantage of doing ROTC at Chapman is that the ROTC unit is actually at Cal State Fullerton. He'll have to be over there from 6:30 - 7:30 a.m. on Mon & Wed and every Friday afternoon. There are several other ROTC cadets at Chapman though, so I'm sure they'll carpool.

When he starts whining about it, I'll remind him that he would not be going to school there if not for ROTC!

I am still feeling kind of stunned that he got in. He never doubted that he would get in. In fact, he still thinks he'll get into USC (he won't). :-)

he might...

D toured Seattle Pacific yesterday with good old Dad in tow and she loved it! Mostly she loved the food in the cafeteria where they had lunch... "Mom it was the best pizza I've ever had!" Oh, and she loved it that when she sat in on one of the classes, a really cool student ("with all these great rings and her hair in a scarf and everything") took the time to introduce herself to D and ask where she was from...

After the tour, the class and the pizza, H broke out the checkbook and they went over to admissions to sign her up (she'd been accepted last month with a small merit scholarship)! Looks like I'll have one at Berkeley and one in Seattle next year.

H is thrilled because of all the great bookstores we will be exploring on our visits. I'm just happy my little homebug D is brave enough to go so far away for college.

That's great that your D is excited about Seattle Pacific, Mom2Inca! What do you bet that next year she'll be calling home to complain about the food? :-)
