I'm also surprised that the acceptance rate went up from last year's. I thought UVA would underadmit and then take names off the waitlist? Can anyone shed light on this?

The 2008 Stats are almost identical to 2007's, which are shown below.

Offers to In-State applicants were down by 1.44%. Applications to Out-of-State applicants were up by 1.82%. Not much difference IMO. In fact, I was surprised by how similar the Offer numbers were.

Undergraduate Admission Statistics, Fall 2007

In 2007, the University received 10,910 applications from Out of State students; 10,708 of these applications were considered completed applications. UVa offered admission to 2,924 of these Out of State applicants, a 27.3% acceptance rate. This number was slightly below their average historical offer rate for Out of State applicants. The average historical offer percentages for OOS students applying to UVa are as follows:

Average Last 3 Years (2005/2006/2007): 30.03%
Average Last 6 Years (2002 thru 2007): 30.15%
Average Last 8 Years (2000 thru 2007): 29.70%
Average Last 16 Years (1992 thru 2007): 29.59%
Average Last 18 Years (1990 thru 2007): 29.22%
Average Last 28 Years (1980 thru 2007): 28.64%
Average Last 31 Years (1977 thru 2007): 28.81%

So the 2008 Out-of-State Offer/Acceptance Rate of 29.13% is very much in line with UVa's historical averages. Hope this info helps.

Because of no early decision this year, and no new finaid plan like Harvard/Princeton, UVA is anticipating a decrease in the yield rate this year.
