Class of 2012/wellesley hopefuls forum

Hi everyone! I thought I would start a thread for seniors thinking about or planning on applying to Wellesley? I know I am and I wanted to meet some other Wellesley hopefuls as well! I won't be able to attend any of the Discover Wellesley days because I live in WA but please let me know how it goes!! Please feel free to post any comments or questions =)

As you can tell, I'm really excited hahah

I’m another Wellesley hopeful from the class of 2012. I can’t attend any Discover Wellesley events either (I live in CA), but I’ve been trying to go to any Wellesley/7 Sisters events in my area. It’s my first choice, but I can’t apply ED because of financial concerns.

I’m super excited also! Are you applying to any of the other sister colleges?

According to Wellesley’s website they dont have any events in my state =( I’ve done TONS of online research about them as well as talked to current students… I guess that will have to do!

No way! Wellesley is my first choice as well but I cant apply ED because of financial concerns too!

I’m applying to Smith as well (my step mother is an alumni). I’m also applying to Scripps (I know its not a seven sisters college but its an all womens college and you’re from CA!)

Hey ladies!! I’m currently a first-year at Wellesley. I remember vividly what the application process was like and would like to offer my advice/experience to y’all! Just PM me!

Also, have faith in the Wellesley financial aid! It is absolutely wonderful and 100% need met. So, I would recommend going for ED if you feel like Wellesley is your 1st choice and your stats are strong enough. I was ED and believe me, it’s SO worth it.

Good luck!! :)

I’m applying hopefully under the EE option. I’m worried that my school won’t have my first semester senior grades by then, but I’m going to call Wellesley and see if that’s okay, since it’s not something I have control over. If not, then RD it is!

I don’t have a first choice, since I’m applying to so many schools and picking just 1 is difficult! But Wellesley is definitely in my top 5! I’m also applying to Barnard and Vassar (although it isn’t all women’s anymore…it’s also among my top 5).

SinFused, I would love to talk to you more! I will be PMing you soon after I finish this massive pile of homework I have =(

In regards to the ED, I REALLY wish I could but my family is considered middle-class and if I dont get enough financial aid from Wellesley I wont be able to go there. The issue is that Wellesley takes into account my step-parent’s incomes and therefore it looks like my family has a lot of money when in reality they are hardly helping me pay for college. I dont want to get stuck in the situation where I get accepted ED and come January, when financial aid comes out, I find out I cant afford to attend… ya know?

^ Have you looked at the Wellesley calculator Collegeboard put up? My family did it and our EFC came out a lot lower than was expected, which was wonderful.

Have any of you visited Wellesley yet? I wish I could, but I live too far away and the only way I’d be able to is if I was accepted.

just a word of caution… though some people get amazing financial aid packages… there are people like me who clearly need financial aid… and got zip. Though Wellesley loves to tout its average grant package… that only goes to about 50% of students… the rest of us 50%, maybe 20% are wealthy, and then there are the ones that are stuck in the middle like me, who are the ones going to graduate school already in debt.

However, there’s not really anything you can do about your financial aid offer until you actually apply… so the moral is, apply to a bunch of different colleges, and be wary and don’t bank on Wellesley to be generous with financial aid (unless you have a VERY GOOD reason, like both parents unemployed).

That’s why I’m not applying E.D. I hear they give good financial aid, but my family just can’t take the risk. I never thought I’d be interested in all-women’s colleges, but I’m also applying to Bryn Mawr and Barnard.

I’m trying to get on one of Wellesley’s sports teams though. Are there any other prospective/current athletes here?

Oh cool! What do you play? I’m interested in playing soccer for Wellesley. I’m a goalkeeper =)

Hi! I’ll be applying RD, too. I’m applying to QuestBridge, but the odds of that working out are very low, so I’m guessing I’ll know my decision in March. I’m going to Discover Wellesley weekend. I hope the school is as great as it seems.

Is anyone else the odd man (well, woman) out for wanting or at least not hating women’s colleges? Whenever one is mentioned by my friends it seems like everyone despises the idea. The latest response I can remember is “That is my actual version of hell.” My parents haven’t said a word against it, though, which is nice.

liddydonaghy:

It seems that everyone and their brother feels compelled to make a disparaging remark about women’s colleges, and it is disheartening.

What do these naysayers ALL have in common? Absolutely none of them have ever attended a women’s college, have a relative who attended a women’s colleges, visited a women’s college, or expended any effort to learn about women’s colleges. So they are pretty worthless as an information source.

As with most things, the opinions that matter are from people who actually have some experience in the matter.

I am also a 2012 Wellesley hopeful, applying ED though. So nervous about the application process! And I’ll admit I was a little wary about the all-women thing at first, but after doing my research, I truly believe that Wellesley is the perfect school for me. Now I get really annoyed when I hear people badmouthing women’s colleges without doing any research, ha ha.

Hahah I get the same response! Whenever people ask me where I want to go to school, I tell them Wellesley, but no one has ever heard of Wellesley! I’m from a small town in Washington State across the country from Wellesley. The best most people do from my high school is the University of Washington so I guess it makes sense no one has ever heard of Wellesley…

However, when I describe Wellesley as an all-womens college they say, “Why would you ever want to go to an all-women’s college?” and I dont know how to convince them that there are so many benefits to going to an all-womens college!

Oh yeah, I’m not swayed away from the idea, but it’s annoying having everyone think you’re nuts and going to be having cat fights for four years. Girls can support each other! And they do that at women’s colleges! Some people also seem to think that people who go there are scared of guys and don’t say what they think around them. Um, okay.

In less serious news, I just discovered that when you press Control + I you get italics tags. I went to Yankee Candle today and smelled the fall stuff and it was the best.

My parents are supportive of me attending a women’s college, and the rest of my family hasn’t said anything against it, even though that’s probably because they’ve seen one too many college movies about frats and crazy parties. None of my friends want to go to one, but they don’t call me insane (at least, not to my face). There are some people who know Wellesley in my city though, so sometimes people are impressed when I say I want to go there. A couple of girls went to Wellesley from my school last year also, so a few of my teachers are familiar with it.

@hearbr8cker- I’m a golfer :)

Oh that’s really cool! I go to an okay public school where most people stay instate, that is, if they make it to college at all so the majority of my teachers have never heard of Wellesley. People are appalled by the all-women’s factor, but even more so, people are appalled that I want to go so far from home! I’m excited to explore a new area!

hey everyone! i will be applying :)

one question, should i apply ed or not? wellesley is absolutely my first choice but my gpa is pretty low (3.5ish uw and 4.0 w). my sat score is perfect though.

i want to show the admissions officers that wellesley is my number one choice but i also want them to see my mid year report to kind of make up for the low gpa. any advice?

Hi everyone! I’m from Colorado and I’m applying to Wellesley too! I plan on applying EE. Wellesley is my first choice college, and so I’m really really hoping that I’ll get in!

Out of curiousity, what’s everyone’s GPA like? I’ll be graduating with only about a 3.5 weighted GPA because I was a total slacker my freshman year :frowning: (I completely get your low GPA problem, purplepoppy07) But from my sophomore year onwards I got all A’s except for one C. I only took two AP classes but by the time I graduate I will have taken two actual college classes as well. I’m really hoping that the college admissions office will notice my upward GPA trend, college classes, and how I rocked the AP Psychology exam (lol). And I read that they seriously take your essay into consideration when deciding whether or not to admit you, so I think that I still definitely have a chance of getting in (fingers crossed!)

So, just wondering: what made everyone here apply to Wellesley?

I honestly wouldn’t be afraid of applying ED to Wellesley even if money is a concern. My daughter took the leap, and they couldn’t have been more generous in her financial aid package. Remember that Wellesley has a stated policy of no loans for anyone whose family makes $60,000 a year or less. Write to me privately if you like, and we can discuss this further.
