Class of 2012 - Who's Applying?

I got that booklet too... although I don't really know why, I would think it would be more useful to a junior than a senior at this stage. However, I'm obviously no authority.

I think it would be safe to assume that the majority of the acceptance letters have not been sent out yet. I actually got a call from my admissions officer the day after I received the packet, which I thought was great. They really seem to care about the students that attend!

Um, yes. Both. Hopefully the FA office will come through for him so he can go to his first choice school.

S received a medium sized-mustard colored envelope from St. Olaf! Hoping this is good news....will have to wait a few more hours until he is home from sports practice......he was not expecting anything for at least a week!

Accepted! :)

Congratulations, collma.

Anyone: How long is a reasonable amount of time to give Olaf a definitive, "Yes, I want to remain on the St Olaf waitlist"?

They said in an envelope today to get back to them "as soon as possible" and, if the answer is "yes, I want to remain on the St Olaf waitlist", then make sure to send in more supporting materials - such as grades, recommendations, and personal statements.

Since we already have given Olaf seventh semester grades, and they are probably not interested in 8th grade grades, we probably should drive seven hours in a driving blizzard AGAIN to see the BuntRock cafe - AND to GUSH about it; We can also ask the religious education teachers to write some more recommendations, in addition to the three, or was that four, who already sent recommendations. We bought one Tshirt already.

As F and M, Depauw and other colleges were stricken previously from the Colleges that Change Lives book for becoming TOO selective*, Olaf is thisclose to losing its everyman stripes. It seems to be that they are 'a gunnin' to break into the top 50 in the vaunted USNR rankings, which likes a higher portion of the class from the top 10 pct of HS, among other selective factors.

Joecollegedad: Sounds like you are not too happy with St Olaf!

Having a D attending now as a Sophomore and just receiving notice that our HS senior has been accepted (lovely mustard envelope), there is some happy campers at our home.

St Olaf deservingly is getting more notice nationwide, but they still get close to 50% from Minnesota/Iowa/Wisc and from persons with Lutheran backgrounds. The competitive nature for all colleges is increasing, not just St Olaf. They are trying to cap their enrollment at 2800 down from the current 3000+, so the acceptance rate for EA might have been reduced. Ergo to your question, the waitlist might well be used if they fall under a 720 students accepting their offer. If, however, like the past two years, they get attendees above 740+, the chances are the waitlist will not be used.

BTW, wish we only had a 7 hour drive, it is over 1300 miles to St Olaf from our home in New Jersey. For us, it is well worth the trip(s).

Joecollegedad-
I am so sorry that your daughter was waitlisted. My daughter was waitlisted by 5 colleges (not St. Olaf) a few years back, and it is not a fun situation. I think it is especially tough for girls at liberal arts colleges.

Since St. Olaf already has your daughter's 7th semester grades, I would suggest having her write a letter explaining exactly why she feels St. Olaf is the school for her, being very specific. If you have already sent 3-4 recommendations, that is probably enough unless you have someone who can offer a different perception than the ones already submitted. Also, you might want to ask what financial is available to students who are admitted from the waitlist...sometimes it is limited.

In the end, my daughter did not get off any of the waitlists, but she is VERY happy at the college she is now attending, and currently finishing her junior year. Things do tend to work out the way they are supposed to in the end.

Wishing good thoughts for your daughter!

Thanks for the thoughts.

im so excited, i got my letter yesterday. now no matter what happens with the rest of my applications, im gonna be able to go to a school i love

Congrats tweety721 and meganvirg on the acceptances! It is indeed very exciting!

I know how that waitlisting thing is...I was on the list for St. Olaf LAST year. Rejected everywhere else I applied to, as well.

Quite the downer, to say the least. I ended up at the community college three blocks from my home and I really really really really REALLY hate it; try being the only person in your school with a quarter of a brain and without a single friend. I sent in my transfer app to Olaf a while ago, so I guess I just have to wait now.

accepted today! :)

Two years of trying to get out of Wyoming and into St. Olaf and what do I get? A thin envelope-- with an acceptance letter. Well, finally!

Hahaaaaa. Now I can relax.

Congratulations Deadvole! Thanks for letting us know the great news.

Congratulations, Deadvole!

Deadvole,
Thank you for sharing your journey. I teach at a community college and your example is one of the things that brings me the most joy in my work. My university transfer students routinely go on to good colleges and report back to me with great success.
St Olaf is probably getting a winner with you. Community college transfer students typically go on to have higher GPA's (I will look up the articles on this and try to find links) than the students that started at the 4 year schools (perhaps because they are older and don't have the freshman year dip that many kids go through as they adjust to college when they are straight out of college). Good luck in your new adventure.
