To all who used the barron vocab list: Will memorizing the barron's 3500 list mean that i'll know all the words used in any sat?

will they simply pick one student from each country?..

ok ok This thread is going fine without me....

Lol, I'm not a hippie Rister.
Where did that come from? Facebook? Is it cuz I'm liberal/libertarian?? :D

@ jhl: No, it does not mean that you are automatically able to recognize any SAT word. But it means that you have mastered an ample portion of SAT words, and that can increase your points so much.

@ ajayc: I was just about to comment on why we don't see you anymore. We miss you ajay..

NOT! :p

How about easily finishing 90% of the sentence completions without a hitch- armed with the 3500 words?

jhl, fyi, i didn't read the 3500 words and I'm pretty sure that I got all the sentence completions questions correct on my SAT.

ajayc we miss you! how's the SAT prep going? starting to get nervous? :p
you'll do fine!!

yes, i'm talking about facebook panos. :)

nadiu doesn't show up anymore too. probably she's looked in her basement and studying for the Math IIC because she tries desperately to surpass me on the june sat :)

lol, what would be better than libertarian? socialist? republican (yikes)?

haha no it's cool! just kidding. look at my compass, i'm pretty liberal as well.

lool this is hilarious:

"Hi.
this may sound like a weird question, but: are you the same person on my MSN contact list? LOL.. from CC? ...you have the same email lol.
the reason I'm asking is 'cause I kinda thought you were a girl lmao!...and your picture says otherwise."

panos, apparently your style of writing is too feminine! :)

wat did u just say?? huh? huh? d'u wanna piece of me?? :D

(stuck is a bit off track apparently!)

Rister, you need not read the 3500 because you're not good enough.. Anyone who wasnt good enough initially but then ace the sentence completion section with the list?

I meant to say you're good enough already.. Typo sorry

So is anyone here applying to liberal arts colleges?

Yes, I'm considering Amherst, Haverford, Swarthmore and Bowdoin at this stage.
Oberlin is too artsy for me, sorry :)

jhl, I'm sorry, I actually wanted to point out that you can ace the sentence completion without learning 3500 words. I'm not good with English vocab but believe me, it's better if you try to learn the roots, strategies etc. than the 3500 words. I mean, of course, if you have plenty of time, go ahead :)

haha~2012ers here~
i'm novice on CC.
well,12' too^_^"
international one...
and..2th june SATI first time..
retake in OCT.
what's more..ehh,i will take SATII MATHII,LIT and PHYSICS
eventually,everybody,gook luck!

INTRUDER ALERT!!!

WE HAVE CLASS OF 2011 PEOPLE HERE!!!

Rister, mind telling me from where did you get your strategies? Thanks..

Epiphany, my friend! :)

Kidding.
"Strategies" is the wrong word, I must admit.
Well, I worked through PR's How To Crack the New SAT but this wasn't too rewarding. I profited most from the Blue Book. You start to develope a feeling which word has to fit in, and of course, if you don't understand a word, write it down.

In addition, PR has a good list with frequently appearing words (there aren't too many words but you still get a solid knowledge about the most frequent words). I can also recommend you to learn the roots! It's sufficient to recognize the root of a word (in most of the cases) to ace the SAT!
Personally, I didn't learn any roots because I could profit from my Latin skills but if don't know Latin, I'd say it's a good idea.

In conclusion, practice and roots were my "strategies". As I said I studied the Princeton Review Words and the Sparknotes Words. Maybe they don't cover as many words as Barron's 3500, however, I don't think that the the costs (time!) outweight the benefits (a higher chance to know ALL words on your test, but still there might be words you never heard of) if you learn the 3500.

It's up to you.

P.S. If you can, read the "International Herald Tribune". There are a lot of SAT words and if you see them in context it's easier to remember them.

P.P.S. Dosomegood, where are you from?

Yeah, you do have wise Class of 2011ers here :). You can ask us for advice. :P. We've been through it.

Um, Rister, not that I want to force you to apply to Oberlin, but Oberlin is one of the few LACs which have very strong sciences :). Now if you meant "liberal" or "eccentric", you're right. Oberlin is not for conformists =).
