Class of 2012

wheres everyone?

I am now a junior, and I am high school class of '08. However, since I am applying to different kind of programs with different lengths, I could be either class of '11, class of '12, or class of '13!

Anyways, this is where I plan on applying (might add some more to the list, and perhaps slightly change the major):

University of Wales, Aberystwyth: BscEcon in International Relations - 3 years
University of St Andrews: MA in International Relations - 4 years
London School of Economics and Political Science: Bsc in International Relations - 3 years
Sciences-Po Paris : 1er Cycle Iberoamerican in Poitiers - 2 years + Year abroad or internship - 1 year (no diploma granted) + Master's in International Relations - 2 years (= 5 year program)
University de Geneve: Bachelor's in International Affairs - 3 years
Franklin College Switzerland: BA in International Relations - 4 years
Jacobs University Bremen: BA in International Politics and History - 3 years

nice r6mile :)

Hello people!
I'm an exchange student in the US this year but will be a senior in France next year.
I plan to apply to 5 colleges or so in the US (Ivies and top colleges), some French "prepas" and "facultes de medecine".
I'm not sure yet on whever going to the US for undergraduate or graduate studies but we'll see.
I took the SATs in March but didn't do as well as I thought. I got 2000 which is OK because I've only been learning english for 3 years in school but unfortunately not enough for the schools I aim. Will be retaking them in June or October.
I've been a member of this forum for a few months now but never really got involved in it so now is time!
Hey r6mille I see you will be applying to sciences po. Nice school! Too french/history focused for me though. Are you (fluent in) french or is there a special program for non-french speakers?

I speak french as a native french speaker (although I am spanish), I have been studying it since I was 6 years old, and I spent my entire "coll?ge" (which would be 6th grade - 9th grade) in french lyc?es. Right now I am studying in an American International School.
By the way, the program that I want to apply is not the regular Sciences-Po Paris (which is, as you said, french-focused), it's a program in Poitiers which focuses on the history and politics of Spain, Portugal, and Latin-America (I am from Spain by the way). The classes are in French, English, Spanish, and Portuguese. You spend two years in Poitiers, one year studying abroad or doing un "stage" (internship), and the last two years in Paris studying for the Master of your choice (in my case, International Relations). You get no bachelor's degree, you directly get a Master's in 5 years.
<a href="http://www.iberoamerica.sciences-po.fr/%5B/url%5D">http://www.iberoamerica.sciences-po.fr/</a>
I'm really hoping that I can get in (it's my first choice), but it will be hard (would take too long to explain why).

nice list r6mile.

And, if you don't mind me daring to give some sort of advice, kick Franklin College out of that list!
University of Geneva is much better (especially with it's location in Geneva for International Relations -so many international organisations, UN organisations, etc.-), and it's practically free!
Plus, if you have the required AP's/the IB or another degree equivalent to the Swiss Matura, you can be sure that you'll be admitted - there is not really an admission process!

Yes I know that University of Geneva is much better, I would much rather go there, however, I have a problem with their AP requirements.
Required AP exams (left side are the requirements, right side are the equivalent AP exams that I have taken/will take):
1 native language: AP English Language
1 foreign language: AP French Language, AP Spanish Language, AP Italian Language & Culture
1 social science: AP World History, AP European History, AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics, AP Comparative Government and Politics
1 mathematics: AP Statistics (not sure if that will count as math)
1 natural science (biology, chemistry, physics): NONE

I will obtain an AP International Diploma for sure (<a href="http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/exgrd_intl.html)%5B/url%5D">www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/exgrd_intl.html)</a>, and I hope they will consider that an equivalent of the Swiss Matura, even though the requirements for both are not exactly the same (although very very similar). If not, I hope my excess of AP exams in the social sciences and foreign language areas will make up for the natural science exam, and the math exam (it depends if Statistics is counted as math by UniGe).

wow, respect! You're AP load looks HUGE, but your lack of natural sciences might hurt you, because actually these are really the requirements.

However, your International Diploma may help you! I recommend you to contact Nicole Schurch ( <a href="http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/intad/intad_switzerland.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/intad/intad_switzerland.html</a> ).

greetz

kinky stuff there!!! I will post my stats soon! :D

well i m from nepal too. n mr switch, where r u from, i mean which college?
n do u know what subjet should i take to study genetic engineering?i don't even know that

Well the AP International Diploma has really pretty similar requirements to UniGees, that's why I'm hoping that they consider it equivalent, because I know Sciences-Po (they told me in an e-mail) does accept the AP International Diploma into the admission process.

If they really require the natural sciences, I think I might kill myself lol. I haven't taken Biology since ninth grade, and I really suck at Physics and Chemistry. Yeah, I'm not really the science-type person.

Rister_Chutophs, are you from Switzerland? Are you studying in an American system or a Swiss system?

Yes, I am from Switzerland (that's why it says "Location: Switzerland" :p)
I'm currently attending a Swiss high school and I'll graduate in August with the Swiss Matura (at least I hope so ;))

did you already contact UniGe?

i really hope they won't blame you for not taking a science AP!! the problem is, that you don't need to take classes not related to your subject at a Swiss University (you can sit in the classes if you want but they don't give credits)... that's why they expect you to have a "liberal arts" - background prior to matriculation..but if Sciences-Po says you're fine - that's definitely a good sign!

btw. a 3 on the science AP would be sufficient!

Yeah I read that, but maybe you were an American studying in Switzerland or something, I don't know.
I really don't wanna take an AP science, I really suck at them, they make me wanna kill myself (I can't imagine what it'd be like at the AP level). And I still hope they consider Statistics as a math (the Collegeboard does), otherwise I am sure I cannot get in (missing the requirements for 2 subject areas).
I contacted UniGe but they haven't replied yet, no wonder, it's sunday!

Just wondering, if you meet the requirements at a Swiss university, are you automatically accepted?

If you have the Swiss Matura you can enroll whenever you want, whereever you want and major in whatever you want. There is not really an admission process.

I'm pretty sure it's the same for international students, it's definitely the same for EU citizens -- if you meet the requirements you're in.

There might be a quota for overseas students, that they can't accept everyone -- if this is they case the admission decision would ultimately come down to APs/IB, etc.
I don't believe this is the case -- if you meet the requirements you can expect to be accepted!

They just separate the wheat from the chaff during the first two semesters: at Uni Zurich in some majors 50%-60% of the students drop out. ;)

This is indeed the same for EU citizens as well as for international students IF their education is seen to be equivalent with the Swiss Matura. If it's not sufficient, you will need to take an entrance examination in order to enroll.

But what if I am an EU citizen but have completed high school in a foreign system (like the American): would I be "automatically" admitted as well if I meet the AP requirements?
And just another question: does UniGe (and universities in Europe outside of the UK) look at SAT or ACT scores, high school record, GPA, etc..., or is admission just based on the scores of final exams (AP's in this case)?

<<but what="" if="" i="" am="" an="" eu="" citizen="" but="" have="" completed="" high="" school="" in="" a="" foreign="" system="" (like="" the="" american):="" would="" be="" "automatically"="" admitted="" as="" well="" meet="" ap="" requirements?="">></but>

Yes, I think so (but I'm not an expert!)

<<does unige="" (and="" universities="" in="" europe="" outside="" of="" the="" uk)="" look="" at="" sat="" or="" act="" scores,="" high="" school="" record,="" gpa,="" etc...,="" is="" admission="" just="" based="" on="" scores="" final="" exams="" (ap's="" this="" case)?="">></does>

The most important scores are always your APs. I doubt that they consider high school record/GPA.
Some definitely do consider the SAT and the Subject Tests;
I've heard that enrollment at German universities requires a score of 1300 on the SAT (M and V).

Man I'm so screwed, check out the reply to an e-mail that I sent them:

1)Est-ce le AP International Diploma ( <a href="http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/exgrd_intl.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/exgrd_intl.html</a>) suffisant pour l'admission?
=> Il s'agit bien d'AP tests.
=> NON.

So I'm basically screwed lol...

ahh this sux!!
sorry mate! what are you doing now? self-study for the APs? I don't want to scare you but a lack of Calculus might hurt you anywhere (also for Sciences-Po, etc.)

good luck!

Well I don't know, I really suck at math and sciences, and I know I would really bomb the exams, and suffer with those courses. I know the lack of Calculus might hurt, but I e-mailed Sciences-Po Iberoamerica and they told me that they accept the AP International Diploma into the international admission process so that's why I'm not worrying too much.
I only took AP Statistics to get the AP ID (I met all of the other requirements, why not meet them all and get the full diploma), and only because it's pretty easy and much more interesting than Calculus. Before learning about the AP ID, I would have never thought of taking AP Stats.

I guess I can't apply to UniGe then..
