I was offered admissions a few weeks ago and will accept. A current cadet has posted a tentative schedule in a facebook group for the 2008-2009 academic year at West Point. Winter leave starts on the 23rd of December. Thinking ahead, I figured I might save some money by purchasing the plane tickets home early. Does any one know (or recommend) whether or not I can do this? On the 23rd, is there restrictions on what times you can leave, for example?

That's a good idea in theory, but not possible. The cadets will have TEE's (Term End Exams) before they leave post for Winter Break. The schedule for TEE's is not posted until some time early October. Then the regs say a cadet can't leave for at least 2 hours after their final TEE.

Before the cadet can leave they will be packing up their room, and putting everything in storage. The room will need to be signed off on before the cadets can leave.

Better to wait until the schedule comes out and then make arrangements.

Good point. Thanks a lot!

Hello! This is my 1st post! My son accepted appointment USMA 2012!!!

We are so proud & excited! We are in Oklahoma, & would LOVE to make an Official Visit, however, dad/hubby is in Iraq w/ US Army & funds are limited! Should I push & take him or do you parents who did not take your son/daughter for official visit do just fine???

Also, I feel really stupid but please tell me what some of the abbreviations you are using in some of the threads mean...
LOA, & so on...

Thank you in advance†

My 1st post too. My son recently accepted as well. I'm hoping the responses you get are that it's not really necessary to visit in advance. At this time, we have no plans on going prior to June 30th.
p.s. I'm lost on some of the abbreviations too -- so don't feel alone!

LOA = Letter of Assurance
MOC = Member of Congress
NOM = Nomination

We will not be going out for a visit either. My s did SLS last summer and that was good enough for him.

The only complaint he had was the humidity! I can't even imagine what beast will be like in that humidity. I read somewhere on this board to send lots of Febreeze!

Just curious to those that have been both: I've heard a lot about the humidity...is it worse than the southeast? I cannot imagine anyone having humidity worse than GA, AL, MS...

Babette and ajrossi, welcome!

My son is a plebe at West Point (WP). He and I visited WP once before he went for R-Day - just the introductory day visit. He did not need to go back for the overnight. I do recommend at least one visit now that your sons have accepted their appointments. The overnight visit will give them the chance to see what a normal day is like.

Beast can get tough and if they have seen for themselves that life will get better after Beast, it may help them have a more favorable perspective. If expenses are tight, it is very feasible for your candidate to go alone.

Of course, many candidates see West Point for the first time on R-Day and they do fine. The materials WP sends are excellent preparation for the West Point experience.

If you are a member of Prospective Net you probably already have contact information for a travel agent who is excellent at making travel arrangements for cadets at a very reasonable cost.

PointMom2012, the humidity is pretty thick in the Hudson River valley. There is set of instructions on how a prospective candidate should prepare for that in the Information for New Cadets and Parents booklet - last year, pages 22 & 23. My son found these instructions helpful even though we live in the humid south...in fact, there is not one wasted word in any of the instructions and information sent in any of West Point's mailings (IMHO).

Best wishes and many congratulations to all of you for your son's appointments to West Point! :)

Hey mom3boys! No, the humidity at WP is not worse that GA. The difficulty comes if your candidate has not acclimated himself to heat in part by avoiding the ever present (and wonderful) southern air conditioning. There is no air conditioning in the barracks at WP, so even southerners need to acclimate themselves properly to heat and humidity. My son did not use AC in his car but I refused to turn off the AC in the house....well, there is only so much I am willing to do! The instructions given in the booklet are adequate and are two pages long or I would duplicate them here....

I subscribed to Prospective Net. Thanks for the link.

How do we find out about a travel agent that deals with cadet travel? Should I post on Prospective Net? Is there a site where I can view previously asked questions?

I've been looking at flights for R-day, and the lowest I could find is over $400 r/t. My hubby and I both want to take him, and return for A-day, but that is expensive. I keep tellling myself, well we're not paying normal college tuition, so instead we'll travel and support him. I'm sure I'll just bite the bullet and do it, however if I can get a better deal, that would be awesome.

PointMom: if you go to kayak.com you can compare all rates/airlines at one time. I watch clarkhoward.com to see when travel deals are posted...I keep thinking there will be an airtran special to Newburgh before long. Also, am hoping the Delta/Northwest merger will happen and bring some good fares. Bottom line is that we will all be biting bullets unless we live in the northeast...oh well...I do have my hotel rooms booked, so that's one less thing to deal with.
usservicemom: he's lived w/ this his whole life, and the southern humidity is stifling at times...I will suggest he turn off the car AC...but like you, I will not be turning off the house unit! Can you imagine no AC when that nasty pollen starts in April??
Can the cadets have fans in their rooms?

Make sure you plug info for Stewart International Airport in Newburgh (SWF) in if you haven't. From some places it is cheaper and it is definetely easier to get to USMA from!

mom3boys, you asked:

Can the cadets have fans in their rooms?

Yes, they buy them from the cadet store during Beast. Some cadets buy them from the PX during A-Day weekend...not sure if every company allows them during Beast, but most companies allow at least one fan in each room.

When booking flights into Newburgh and renting cars, I suggest using Priceline. There are only the 4 major rental car agencies there, and I got a much lower price when I bid. I didn't care which agency I rented from; I was looking for price. Also, chose the economy model, they usually don't have that model and you'll get the free upgrade automatically. You just can't be choosy.

I love priceline. I will do my best at getting a car. Has anyone tried to get hotels on priceline in Newburgh? I noticed they have a newburgh area in which to select. I just got on the parent resources site this morning and began looking at hotels for June and August. I wonder if there's any room left.

I just realized we're still on the Class of 2012 thread. I'll start a new thread pertaining to traveling this summer.

If you are on Prospective.net you can also find information about Carlson Wagonlit for travel. This will only really help your CC as he/she is reimbursed for travel to West Point for R-Day, but only if they use them for booking. Otherwise, you're on your own. You should get information in one of the packets that will be coming via mail on how to arrange this if interested. Most don't take advantage of it because the entire family travels up for R-Day.

As Ann would say (Thanks Ann!):

OK - back to the topic. Congratulations everyone!!
