Looking forward to hearing from those who auditioned this weekend. We were unable to head out to NYC so we had a change of plans for this weekend, its all good all good. BAL to all who auditioned and looking forward to hearing.

Just checking in quickly to say that my s very much enjoyed his audition experience at Hartt. Once again, we were so grateful to be able to audition on campus; in this case, we would never have guessed how welcoming and energetic the performing arts students and facilities would be. Following a student-led info/q-and-a session, a number of current students circulated the waiting area, speaking with nervous applicants, answering questions, generally being helpful; they were genuinely friendly and articulate about why they chose and love Hartt. My son liked the faculty members he met during his audition and came away with a clearer understanding of the acting program. Despite our usual preference for a traditional “college atmosphere” type of campus, we both loved the Handel Center, even with its satellite location. And (bonus): the snow was negligible, so no travel problems. Hope everyone else had good auditions…now to gear up for NYC!

I am so glad, Times3. The Hartt audition was my husband’s trip and I am so glad to get another perspective! It is currently my son’s #1, we will see what happens in NYC…cannot believe it is next week, have to admit I have enjoyed the break. I am delighted your son had such a positive experience.

Congrats to everyone as they move through this really difficult phase! I am glad to hear the stories, and it is so helpful for the next group to know how things can go.

I think auditioning on campus allows for so many helpful aspects, both at the audition (like the nice current students who talk to you and help you!) and in seeing campus and all of the other information you get. If I have a regret, I would have taken my D to more campus auditions and skipped Unifieds. She found it a loud, tense, impersonal scramble, and it increased her nervousness immensely. I am impressed with kids who have fun at Unifieds and do their best work under those circumstances.

My D has participated in audition days at Adelphi and has been really happy to help prospective students feel confident and learn about the program. She remembers what a hard time it was.

Again, best wishes to everyone.

I wish, logistically, going to each was possible, but it is not. We live in a lovely part of the south but flights are hard and so expensive. Unifieds are a wonderful option, but we did get to 2 on location auditions. One worked great, the other, not so much!!! lol…

It is my impression that the Chicago Unifieds are more of a “loud, tense, impersonal scramble” (as Emmybet quotes above) than the Unifieds in the other locations. Not sure…

Some of the auditions that are scheduled at the same time as Unifieds (in nearby locations), are a bit more mellow than the Unifieds themselves. This is worth taking into consideration when you are making your plans and doing your scheduling.

My son auditioned for NYU, Boston University, and Carnegie Mellon in New York during Unifieds and those auditions all had a reasonably caring “feel” to them.

We did the purchase audition on Friday and Rutgers today. Reading here about the acceptance odds and everything is one thing, hearing it from the kids in the programs is another. In purchase 800 audition for a class of 24, I thought that was bad. In Rutgers they had 1700 audition last year for a class of 16! Totally depressed now! University of Illinois is starting to look really good right now!!

I just thought I’d check in now that I’m done filling out applications and am focusing on my upcoming auditions.

I’ve received a couple academic acceptances and two callbacks for theater programs. I know they don’t mean anything until I’ve got a BFA acting acceptance letter in my hand, but it’s still nice to receive those little bits of good news.

So, my total number of upcoming auditions comes to eight. I’m equal parts excited and anxious.

Is anyone else going to be at Chicago unifieds?

I don’t want to scare anyone too much about Chicago Unifieds - honestly all but one of the schools were very friendly and did their best. BU and CMU tried to set up in ways that probably resembled their on-campus auditions. We weren’t particularly tight for time (two a day) and D was able to do a couple that worked as warm-ups (one she was less interested in, and one that was a walk-in).

She didn’t do any audition days at schools, so my comments are merely conjectures. She did two auditions as private appointments, and they were on campus, where she could also look around, meet students, see what was going on. I do think that is a great option, if you can manage it. There is no magic answer to making this work, though.

It is very nerve-wracking to think about the odds and to wonder what your results will be. All I can say is that very, very few kids on these threads have come up empty - almost all of them have a BA option that they really like, or a non-auditioned BFA, but a large amount also get at least one BFA acceptance.

ClaresMom…sending you a virtual hug. The numbers are not great but there are so many options and programs, EmmyBet is absolutely correct. The kids will find where they are supposed to be one way or another!!!

Thanks EmmyBet and photomon5! I know this will all be over soon and we’re all in the same boat. Everyone at every audition seems so great and so passionate about theater and acting. How do these auditors decide?! It must be hard for them too. One of the kids at Rutgers didn’t get a callback and only heard he was in the last week of April! So that gave me hope in a way
thanks for the hug and I know we’ll be where we are meant to be a year from now, but it’s still so stressful!

I would never in a million years want to be a part of the audition process on either side of the desk. Our kids are strong and amazing.

Keep going, everyone! I know you’re in the thick of it, and it will soon be finished!

Times3 - sooooooooo glad to hear good news about Hartt! Especially the new performance center, and the friendly upperclassmen. Give me more details when you have a minute.

ClaresMom - I am shocked at the number of kids auditioning at Rutgers! NJ kids? Wow! As hard as it is to hear, I guess it is better to hear the reality. But you won’t know until you get your letter.

Eve848 - Best of luck with your auditions! You knock 'em dead! and congrats on your acceptances so far!

ClaresMom – what we heard when we were in at Rutgers after you was that the 1700 number was for all of Mason Gross including dance for example. They don’t audition 1700 for just acting BFA.

I’m going to California next week to audition for Central School of Speech and Drama, CalArts and UArts. Best of luck to everyone ;)

Good luck milkshakespeare! If you project just half of the passion you communicate in your posts here, you will do great!

My only other Internet home before this Board has been a board associated with my undergraduate degree. We talk about our teams but we also have a sub-board where we talk about things other than sports. Many of us have met at various games. I’ve been sharing things about my daughter’s journey since she was in 8th grade. I had not posted about her in a couple of years but today I updated the board about the craziness of this process. One of my favorite posters posted something I thought was worth sharing with everyone here --

“Best of luck in the process and worst case scenario it seems is that you and your daughter are closer than ever. As silly as this may sound and as stressful as the process is at some point remember to sit back and enjoy the moment. What your daughter is attempting to do is extraordinary. Sometimes that needs to be remembered and enjoyed.”

Thank you ActingDad! And this is a great quote, thanks for sharing it.

^^Love it and agree 100%.
But will freely admit that I’m glad this is my last time through the college process!
Thanks for sharing that, ActingDad.

What a great thought…
