Class of 2013--checking in!

My son’s audition with Emerson went as follows…he did his first monlogue. They asked him to do another so he did. They said good job and thank you. And…that was it.

Just got back from the CalArts audition. It was amazing. We had a brief introduction on the school, the program, etc and I was just sitting there the whole time thinking “This is the program I was looking for”, which I knew beforehand, but it was reassuring to hear it from the head of the BFA program. The campus is awesome, the theater facilities are great and everyone was nice.

One thing that I find really importat to say is that at the beggining the head of the program made sure to say that she was human too and that they’re looking for students who are passionate about the work and they don’t believe in treating students like “numbers”, every student gets special attention and are appreciated. Also, they didn’t talk about the number of applicants each year, which I found great, because it made me feel like I had a big chance (although I know the number, I just decided to forget it for a little while).

There were a few of girls from the BFA and MFA programs to talk to us and answer questions and they were great. It was all very informal, as if you were already part of the school, and just auditioning for a show. It was the last date of auditions and I had one of the last time slots.

My audition went pretty well, I did both my monologues and was asked to sing in my native language (which was hilarious to me, because believe it or not, it was my first time singing in my native language for someone other than my shower). She asked me what I wanted in a school and talked to me a little bit about the other schools I was applying to. I was then given a card and asked to shadow a student for a day and she talked to me about merit-based financial aid.

It was so much fun! And I feel like this is the place I wanna go, so I hope it turns out ok!

^^This was so fun to read, and I really will be interested to hear the results. Many thanks for the detailed and upbeat report!

Yes, I’m pretty excited! Whatever the results may be, it gave me a lot of confidence which I had lost on Saturday. And weirdly enough, it’s the first time that I felt like this could actually come true and stop being just a dream.

Milky, so happy for you. Glad Cal Arts went well for you! Please keep us posted on your experience if you get to shadow a student.

Milk, I’m so glad you had such a terrific experience! I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you that some excellent news from CalArts is headed your way very soon!!

Milky, you will find your place, I have no doubt!!!

Sounds just wonderful Milk-- you are so articulate. I can’t wait to see where you land!

Milk, sending positive thoughts! Keep us posted!

Milk, you have a ton of fans here. So glad your audition experience has been positive!

Thanks everyone for the positive thoughts! Keep 'em coming! hahaha. My grandma even lit a candle for me this week.

I had my last audition today. It was UArts. It went vey well, I think. I wasn’t nervous at all and I got a ride from the nicest guy in the world who told me great stories about his life and how he made it to LA just by hitchhiking and that made me feel much calmer. I did both my monologues and then the auditor asked me to re-do my contemporary one being more physical, because he “had a feeling that I was a very physical actor”. He was right. So I did it and then once again I was asked to do a monologue in my native language and because I didn’t have any (I SHOULD HAVE FOLLOWED MY INSTINCTS AND PREPARED ONE!), I said I could sing a song instead.

I then translated the song to him and we talked for a while and I told him my aspirations and we chatted quite a bit about my love for the German kabarett scene from the 20’s and Brecht and whatnot. He told me about a Mexican student who went to UArts and about the difficulties of working as a foreigner after college.

It was good. I didn’t feel the same connection to UArts as I did with CalArts, especially because the auditor kept looking away while he was talking to me and didn’t try to make eye contact at all, which made me feel uncomfortable because I think that when you’re trying to “sell your fish” you should make eye contact.

Anyway, my U.S. auditions are over. I just have 1 more which is by DVD and that’s it! Just waiting now…at least March is not a very long wait. Until then, I have trapeze, theater, German and yoga lessons awaiting for me back home.

Best of luck to all of you who are still auditioning!

Did you have Ernie Losso (the guy who studied under Meisner) or someone else?

The lack of eye contact thing sounds more like a personal quirk than anything specific to you.

Just wanted to share this post on CC regarding FASFA.
As many of us are in the category of filling this out for “more than 10 schools” as is allowed on the form, I found this post which explained some of the nuances of this issue.
Bottom Line: find your schools with the earliest deadline. Put in 10 schools. Wait until you have the documentation from FASFA, then go back in and correct the form deleting the first 10 schools and adding in the rest and sending again. This should work but you should either contact FASFA or review this thread before following my direction since I have not done this yet. Happy Fasfa!

ActingDad - I don’t think it was Ernie Losso. I’m not sure what my auditor was called. He didn’t seem to be an acting teacher. Maybe a directing teacher? I don’t know.

I agree, I think it’s a personal thing. But still…I would have appreciated more eye contact.

Also, I shadowed a student today at CalArts. It was amazing. I’m afraid I’m falling too much in love with the school without even having been accepted. If you’re interested in my experience, PM me.

mom2gals, I did that last year with the FAFSA when my daughter applied to 13 schools. I needed a spreadsheet to keep it all sorted out. In the end, it wasn’t too difficult-- just a bit annoying. I felt insecure about deleting the earlier FAFSAs, but the schools had already downloaded them, so it was not a problem.

The most annoying thing was that I had to do this twice because some schools required a Feb 1 or Feb 15 filing so I needed to file estimates and then redo it all with amended FAFSAs… twice.

The good news is that you will only be doing one FAFSA next year and the deadline will be much later!

Milk – we can relate to falling in love with a school. Imagine actually spending six weeks going to school there – my daughter’s experience at CMU.

My daughter did not apply to Cal Arts because it was not a great fit for her and she would rather not be 3000 miles from home. Still, when you described the kind of school you were interested in, Cal Arts seemed like the perfect fit. Fingers crossed that it works! (As a non actor type, I still can’t bring myself to talk about breaking legs)

Well, tomorrow begins our looong week of visits and interviews. We start with the trek to Virginia for VCU and Shenandoah this weekend. Eleven days from now all her interviews will be complete. (Except for the scholarship one at GTA, but it isn’t for artistic acceptance, just $$) Then, I guess the waiting game continues. I’m going to be racking up a ton of miles in the next few days!

Safe travels to you and your daughter, ugadog99, and I hope things go well at both schools. We are on your route between Richmond and Winchester, so I’ll send you good thoughts for perfect traveling weather. Enjoy your road trip!

Ugadog…enjoy VCU (where I went to college!) and Shenandoah (where my daughter is!). If you need anything, I can pm you her phone number. Enjoy my home state!
