Class of 2013--checking in!

Hey, quick check-in to say that BU auditions took place this morning–26 kids, I think 9 of them boys, and 5 from BUSTI so that was a happy reunion (one of the TA’s came up and had lunch with them afterward too). They took kids in to audition three at a time (each with a single auditor), and spent about 15-20 minutes with each applicant. All the kids I spoke with said they gave them adjustments for one of their monologues, then had a general interview. My S’s auditor was Paolo, and apparently the “workshopping” of the monologue was really helpful–nothing random like stacking chairs, but more an in-depth discussion of the scene and character. S’s interview focused on his artistic goals–again, challenging, interesting, helpful. The kids I spoke with all seemed to have had fun and clearly felt really positive about the whole experience. An unusual (and welcome) warm spell made it a reasonable day to trudge around the city afterward, and S and I have sought out a quiet corner in a hotel lobby to hide till we hop on a late overnight train back to Virginia. Feels like we have been wandering around the city forever…hopefully that’ll help us get a little sleep on the 13-hour trip home! :)

Thanks Times for the feedback on your audition. It sounds like everything went well, and I will be able to coach my S on what to expect at auditions…I guess anything. The good thing is that my S is pretty quick on his feet and is comfortable in any situation. We finally got his PSAT scores and first semester Junior year grades, so we have made a list today to meet with GC this week. He decided he wants to go big or go home with the BFA programs because he would be just as happy to go to an LAC with a strong theater program. He is also in the process of applying to Northwestern Cherubs and BUSTI’s summer programs. He is a strong student who will have 5 AP’s from a rigorous private prep, great test scores, and a lot of theater EC’s. So far he has BU, NYU, Fordham, Emerson, UNCSA, Purchase and DePaul. Muhlenberg, Kenyon, Oxy, Skidmore, Conn. College, Mac, and Wooster as LAC’s. Still considering Elon and Vassar, and probably Northwestern as a SUPER reach.

5boys: I don’t know if it’s my place to say this, but I know two theater students from Kenyon who are not really happy with the theater program there, although they love their college. I also know two from Vassar who love it and one from Conn College who also likes it a lot. I know some of the Conn College teachers and they are really really good! I was a student at the National Theater Institute, which is accredited by Conn College and it is also in New London. If you want some more info, just send me a PM.

My D received another academic acceptance: Otterbein. I know this is a two part process, but I sure will be thrilled when she gets an artistic acceptance!!

Congrats ugadog99! It is so hard to wait, but in time she will get her decisions and I really hope for a lot of good news to come.

Congrats ugadog99…hoping for more good news!

Congrats to your D, ugadog99! Hope the good news keeps rolling in! Curious if she decided to apply to wright state?

Dramamama, we spent most of last week weighing the differences in Wright State and one other school, Western Carolina. In the end, Wright State seemed to “speak” to her, so she submitted her application yesterday. I’m glad our system has a mid winter full week break in February. We’ll be spending it traveling to all these auditions!

Congrats to all getting good news and hang in there for those waiting. Sending stay healthy vibes to all your kids and you drivers!

5boys, as you look at summer programs for your son, take a look at the program at University of Minnesota. It is shorter than Cherubs and BUSTI but also much less expensive. And the theater program at UMinn/Guthrie is wonderful. https://theatre.umn.edu/theatre/elements

Re: some of the above posts, I had a daughter who majored in drama at Kenyon (loved it, many of her classmates are thriving in their field), and my son attended both the Minnesota and BU summer programs…so feel free to PM me if you’d like my observations, such as they are! ;)

Interesting about Kenyon milkshake… huh… I have always heard great things about their theater program?? We will for sure ask plenty of questions if we get a chance to visit. My S is on the fence about it’s VERY remote location… I picture my S in a more urban/city setting as he needs constant stimulation.

leftofPisa… I will have my S check out Minn’s summer program. The top theater kids at his HS all go to Cherubs, so that is why he is so enamored with it… and they do give FA. BUSTI does not. He has some $ saved that he will contribute, since I have always been against paying for summer programs. He has managed to do the last 3 years of summer theater programs on full scholarship, based on talent, so we will see. He is also working the first month where he has worked the past 4 summers at a scout camp. I like that Minnesota’s program is shorter though.

Ugadog, that is exciting. Hope everything works out and offers keep rolling in! We have a winter break too and it is fabulous. The rest of S’s auditions are in atl so we are finished traveling!!

Okay…so we finally have an artistic acceptance! Yes, it is one of those that’s audition for scholarship only, but hey, it’s an acceptance. It is also the ONLY state school on the list, and there was a merit scholarship already given. We should hear about talent scholarship later.

Congrats ugadog99!

ugadodg…it is a wonderful feeling! Congrats!

Congratulations!!!

Very glad for you and your daughter, ugadog!! :D

Thanks, y’all! I do feel like I can relax and enjoy the process a bit now knowing that at least one school wants her! :)

It is a such an unsettling process…that first acceptance is really a game changer.

Fantastic news, congratulations!
