btp092: She was accepted by Ursinsus College, an LAC in PA, and one of the schools in Loren Pope’s book “Colleges That Change Lives.” I don’t know if she’ll go there. A lot depends on whether the financial aid offer is competitive. She applied to 10 schools. But we’re happy about this anyway.

My Son got an acceptance from Ursinus as well. This school isnt well known on the West Coast, but the more we look into it the more we like it. And yes, its nice to have an acceptance before Thanksgiving, makes sleeping a lot easier.

These priority applications are a good idea, it gets the schools name out there, and makes parents’ life a lot easier.

My D has been accepted to two of her safties (ASU and SUNY Oneonta) and one target (Indiana University, Bloomington). Hopefully, she’ll hear from her top two choices before the end of December. We’re anxious.

My D. was accepted to the University of Missouri – Columbia. It was the only university she decided to apply to :-)
She was admitted to the School of Journalism, the Honor College and to the Walter Williams Scholars Program and got a few scholarships from the University and the School of Journalism. So, we’ve done with i:-) Such a relief ….

lgarden11: What is a “likely” letter? I’ve not heard of it.

kumitedad: Was your son able to visit Ursinus? We did. My D really liked the campus. Some people don’t think much of Collegeville (too boring, etc.) but my D liked it. She doesn’t want a lot of distractions. She was impressed by the dining options on campus, but what really impressed her is the fact there is a Sonic and a Target right down the street. Funny. She keeps talking about that. Collegeville is also not all that far (if you have a car) from the second biggest mall in the United States, the King of Prussia Mall. It’s quite impressive. Only the Mall of America in Minnesota (where we used to live) is bigger.

D has two acceptances in hand; Alabama and Nebraska. Both schools offer NHRP scholarships of full tuition plus, which she qualifies for.

lgarden11, congrats to your D. I wish my D would swim in college. She says she will not but now that HS swimming has been over for a week, she already misses it. She went today and helped coach the boys team. If she wants to swim, she’ll have to apply to Arizona State. She’s not fast enough for any of the other schools she’s applying to.

I wish my D would swim in college.

My daughter has pretty much devoted herself to dance since about the 4th grade…first in private company, then added drill team in middle school and HS. She’s only in 10th grade, but she says she has no interest in doing college drill team or any other type of dance after HS. Funny that they can love something, but then know when they want to be done.

The younger daughter was a gymnast for 8 years…the schedule is like swimming…3 hours a day, 5-6 days a week, 12 months a year, only a few holidays…She retired last spring and hasn’t looked back. It was such a huge part of her life, and now she’s just over it. I think it’s easier for them to give up some of the activities than it is for us sometimes. (I was watching her cheer at a basketball game a few days ago, pondering the fact that I really don’t have friends among the parents of the girls her age…the people I bleacher bonded with are the gymnastics parents and now I never see them!)

my D is a little bit in the same boat with band. has been in band since 6th grade, but is totally not willing to consider it for college.

i try to point out the good things about it so she will at least consider band in college, but all my “advice” is falling on deaf ears!

My daughter did really well in Tennis all four years of high school but she doesn’t want to do it in college, she’d cheer (another sport she was involved in) before she’d play tennis.

Anyway, D has been accepted to 4, deferred at 2, and waiting for 2 rolling admissions and 2 others with results expected on 12/3 and 12/5. With the 4 she’s already been accepted to, she is seriously considering two, even if she gets accepted to the other 4. She would have liked to attend the 2 deferrals, but those were her “reach” schools. She should be proud she was deferred and not flat out denied!

Congrats to all!

my son was just early accepted to William and Mary … but the day before he got another acceptance letter and a $72,000 scolarship to Depauw … now I don’t know what to do … he wants W&M but that scholarship will lighten my burden!

Is William and Mary really worth all the money just to get a degree from what is considered a public Ivy???

Aren’t both programs binding? He should not have applied to two binding ED schools.

my D got her first acceptance 2 days ago for FSU! but she doesn’t want to go… , she wants to go out of state! we are waiting for more opportunities! FSU will do just fine if anything…

debbs,

I am quite sure that you and your son signed an ED agreement when applying ED to W&M.

However, if W & M’s financial aid leaves you with a hardship, perhaps there is way to gracefully extricate your son from the ED binding commitment.
Maybe others have some experience with this and can chime in.

Depauw is binding too… 2 EDs?

My son’s counselor had to sign off on his ED application that this was the only ED school he was applying to. But I also know that some schools, if you are also applying for Financial Aid, do not insist upon binding ED agreements.

No William and Mary was where he applied for early acceptance … he just sent his paperwork in to all his schools early to get them out of the way.

I think that’s where we are going to run into trouble … money … although Depauw gave him a $72,000 scholarship he doesn’t want to go there … he’s determined on William and Mary … I was hoping for acceptance to Notre Dame … hey a Mom can dream can’t she??? we didn’t apply for any ED except W&M but sent out about 8 apps, so I have no idea why we recieved the great offer from Depauw so early … but hey, I’m not complaing when anyone wants to give us that much money!!!

I guess I’m not understanding why he has already received notification of acceptance if he did not apply ED to Depauw. The website says that notification of acceptance for regular decision is in April.

If you applied ED and got an offer of admission, that is definitive: now is the time to withdraw all other applications.

tokenadult is correct-- an ED application is typically accompanied by a required signed document (contract) indicating that if accepted you will attend, and will rescind any and all other applications. If one is not financially prepared to attend that school, they shouldnd apply ED. It is the rare instance that a student will be released from an ED acceptance if the FA is insufficient, but it is not a good thing to do-- and is usually looked badly upon.
