Class of 2013

Yay, more '13s :) I would love to go to Columbia - No MIT for me :p

hey, just curious, but which school would you feel is hardest for internationals to make? my guess would be yale and harvard(?)...simply because a lot of people apply for the prestige and reputation...perhaps we could start a thread on this...
then again i m lazy...som1 else do it

but seriously, good luck to all

yeah miraboo no MIT for me either! The columbia campus is soooooo pretty right? and like its in the middle of the city but its like a real campus, or at least thats the feeling I get from the pictures...

I think HYPMS are all pretty darn hard to get into...prestige+need-blind admissions in 4 of them = lots and lots of international applicants

YES! I love that it's in New York, but still has its own little bubble. I don't really like Boston U because its campus is integrated into the city itself. If you get what I mean... :)

There are only four or five kids from my school applying to the US, including me, and the rest of them want to do engineering at MIT or Caltech. Do I get points for NOT being an Asian who wants to do engineering? ;)

I totally get what you mean, even though I've never been there. I mean USC is kind of the same, they are in like such a bad neighbourhood of Los Angeles but its like you step into the USC circle and its like its own universe as you said.

I have noo idea how many kids from my school are applying to the US but judging by how many were taking the SATs with me last time at least 4 or 5, including me. I know that me and another girl are US citizens but the rest are surprise surprise asian.
But haha yeah, i want those points too ;) so your saying your not an asian and you dont want to do engineering, or you are an asian but dont want to do engineering... do you know what you want to major in? Does anyone?

@miraboo: It can't hurt :p

I mean when u apply for Brown as ED, then u fail, u can't apply for RD of Brown anymore

Does it make sense

Yes that's correct

but if you dont get in ED dont they just like roll your application to RD?

It depends. If they reject you, then they won't consider your app anymore.
But if they defer you, your app will be reviewed again with the RD apps.

but if they reject you for ED wouldn't they reject you for RD too?

If you apply ED, three things can happen: they accept you (and you go), they reject you (and you can't apply again for RD) or they defer you (you're not admitted ED but they put your application into the RD pool, so essentially, you get a second chance!) :)

I've never been to the US either, I might be going with my dad over Christmas to check out universities. It's a big IF though. And it's a bit silly to go AFTER I finish the majority of my applications, but it can't be helped.

Oh, I am Asian and I want to do something UN-y like a language(s) (French and something else?I already speak French), international affairs, economics, etc. But the thing is, I change my mind like crazy, like this time last year, I wanted to be a doctor and this time two years ago, I wanted to be a journalist. Who knows, maybe I'll turn right round and major in fine arts! :)

ahhh I get it, still not planning on applying ED for anywhere, because the only place I would def be happy commiting myself to is SC and they dont offer ed :( but I did submit their part I applications very happily last week :D

I've actually been to the US, most of my family lives there, actually all my immediate family (aunts, uncles, cousins) except my parents live there... so I've seen the USC and UCLA campuses but never been to the east coast... fingers crossed will make it there in feb but that will be after I sumbit applications anyways.

Cool, most of my school is asian, i'm like the token white kid, lol. French, awesome! me too! i've only taken it since 7th grade though, but hopefully wil be fluent one day. I know what you mean about changing your mind. I always have my mind set on one thing like I wanted to be a director then a doctor, and i've wanted to be a neonatologist for like the past 4 years and now its kinda like hang on, i'm not sure if i even want to be a doctor.

Our school follows the British curriculum so the vast majority of our kids are applying through UCAS to British universities. In fact, I think I'm the only person in my class of 35 (haha) not doing that (I don't want to go to the UK and I don't want to waste my time and my parents' money applying somewhere I won't go)!

We have kids from everywhere at our school though they are mostly Asian or white (mostly Europeans, Australians and New Zealanders). We don't get too many Africans or Latinos around here. I remember setting up our cultural buffet thing during International Week and Asia and Europe took up the most space. Africa had something like three dishes. :/

you go to an international school right?

my school is kinda weird, its public but its whats called a selective school, so you take this test in 6th grade and you get in, so yeah there are a lot of asians, now dont get my wrong I have nothing against it, as I said i'm the only caucasian in my group of friends.

I'm gonna apply here though because it doesn't actually cost us anything to apply, the only thing that costs is the UMAT which stands for Undergraduate Medical Addmissions Test I think... anyways its to go to med school, so i'm gonna sit and we'll see, I really want to go to the US though, esp if I have to end up doing post-grad med anyways, thats if i end up being a doctor ;P

Yep, I go to an international school. It's not selective, whoever applies can attend if they can pay. I switched from another school for Year 10/9th Grade and I had to take tests in math, English and science but that was just to place me in a class that matched my ability. We can't apply to public Australian universities until our A level results come out in August next year. So for the moment, it's just the US for me.

My mom's a doctor, so I grew up playing with stethoscopes and syringes (without needles, of course!) and zooming around hospital lobbies in wheelchairs. I thought it was a cool job, so that's why I wanted to be a doctor at one point. But there's too much cool stuff to do, you know? So many things to explore before I make a final decision.

I go to a local school. But mind you, we send people to better universities than the international school out here does ;).

Miraboo, thats awesome, I've always wanted to go to an international school I reckon it would be pretty amazing to know people from all around the world :) So you gonna apply for universities here in aussieland too? I think i'm going to apply this year seeing as it doesn't actually cost anything and then at the worst enrol in a BA or BSc program and defer for a year, I mean I can always decline it at the end of the year if I get into a US university.

For a while I was like yep going to do undergrad med, 6 years finish specialize, theres no way I wated to do post-grad, thought it was a waste of time, but my mind is slowly changing, think it would be good to have those extra years to explore my options and think a little more about what I want to do you know?

@ tetrisfan: which country do you live in? You don't have to answer if you don't want to though. :) I live in Malaysia. Most of the kids in my country head for the UK or Australia, though more and more are thinking about the USA.

@ beeish: my international school has given me a lot of opportunities I wouldn't have had in a local school, like visual arts, theater and Model UN. In Malaysia, science and math seem to be valued over history, the arts and languages. I pretty much live and breathe art and MUN! If I don't go off to an American university in September next year, I'll apply to Aussie universities for entrance in 2010. :) One of my best friends lives in Perth and I think she's checking out Aussie universities now, in the territory that Perth is in (my geography is extremely rusty)!
