Class of 2014!

Hello!
Is anyone else applying to European colleges or I’m the only one?
I’ll apply to few francophone and then to the states.
hopefully i’ll be staying in europe
where re you applying to?

Good luck! I’m applying to some British universities: Cambridge, Warwick, Imperial, and LSE.

P.S. What does the word francophone mean? :)

“francophone” means that they speak french there.

@luluzg > I’m going to apply to a college here in Belgium (it’s almost free and we can take all our time to do it, so it’ll only be if I’m accepted nowhere in the US) and probably a few in France too. Where will u apply ?

Python I was thinking about the UK but then if I’ll have 38+ in IB then I might apply. Now I have 36 so probably I’ll stick to some francophones.

I’d like to apply to ULB in Bruxelles, Sciences Po Dijon, Universite du Luxembourg, Dubrovnik International University and maybe if I find some bilignual French-English:)
My first choice is SP Dijon and then Luxembourg and then the States. I’ll apply now in the summer but also I have to pass DELF B2 for Uni du Lu.
BTW. I’m interested in Law, human right or international law.

ELou24 you’re from Belgium? Can you tell me how much money do you need for a college life in Bruxelles?
Where will you apply excatly?

I want to apply in the UK but I’m confused about how to. I don’t even know what they’re looking for.

Mostly just board marks for us.

Thanks lulu.

@luluzg > Yes, I’m from Belgium. I haven’t made my final choice yet, between UCL (Catholic University of Louvain) and ULB (since I lived in Brussels for 10 years now, I’m not sure I want to spend another five years studying in here).

You really don’t need a lot of money to study here. I know that I’ll only have to spend something like five hundreds euros for one academical year (informations here : =http://www.ulb.ac.be/enseignements/inscriptions/frais-etudes.html</a>). As for the rest (housing, clothing, books), you can find informations there : " http://www.ulb.ac.be/enseignements/inscriptions/budget-etudiants-etgs.html</a> ". It can also became alot cheaper when you already know the city.

I’m also interested in law but the scholastic system isn’t quite the same (US><BE) :S

“Your writing should best present your niche. When I was writing my application I made sure that each piece of writing focused on a different aspect of science and how it related to me (except the short answer which was about football). You should do the same. Also for those that do not know the people who vote to admit you don’t actually read your essays they read a brief summary of your application in front of a committee of people and then they vote on your summary NOT the actual essay. This is important because I think people focus more on the essay itself rather than what that essay says about you. Therefore the most important thing the essays do are demonstrate you want to be in front of the committee. Something that I think is an exercise that can help people is to read through your application completely and write a one-page summary of the applicant solely based on the information in your file and without your personal bias. If that summary is what you want to present to the admission committee then great, if there is something missing then tweak your essays to incorporate something about you.”

So basically how well-written, witty, humorous, whatever your essay is doesn’t matter at ALL? You’d be better of just making a list of what you’re good at and what you like without any decorative writing to make it interesting to read?

What univ is the last post about?

All schools. It was on the Yale forum posted by Dbate.

That’s one person. I’m sure you’ll find another admit whose essay screams ‘quirky’.

No, I meant the part where he says the adcom doesn’t even read your essay. That’s the worrisome part.

I mean, what if your essay is not about academics or ECs you care about - of which there’s enough in a transcript and resume and supplements - and just about the way you look at life? How can that be incorporated into a summary of your strengths?

The way you look at life is ALWAYS a strength

Yeah, but it’s so subjective. You can incorporate it into an essay but not in a one-page summary that includes your grades and ECs and everything else.

Thanks Elou.
I know that, i.e Europe has a Roman law system while the States have Anglo. This is the main reason I’d like to study law in Europe coz I’m coming to stay here.
Can you tell me something more about the Catholic University? Admission, fees, conditions (is there an English programme, etc…), etc…
Thank you

You can find informations about languages here : [UCL - Langues d’enseignement et prparation linguistique](http://www.uclouvain.be/5022.html) , and fees there : [UCL - Droits d’inscription 2009-2010](http://www.uclouvain.be/1468.html) . UCL’s fees are quite the same as ULB’s (there are not many differences between the two of them, besides the fact that it has “catholic” in its name :o).

Some classes, at least Law courses, can be taught in english if you want them to be. I’m not sure they do that at the UCL but I know that some universities (ULB, FUSL) do that. And since we live in Belgium, you’ll probably be required to take some classes in deutsh :s

Well I’m a very impulsive writer and my best works are never about my ECs…
